What Is the Best Way to Start Family Worship?
Search for the "best way to start family worship" and you'll find plenty of schedules, checklists, and ten-step plans. They have their place. But the truth is that the best way to begin is not first a method — it is a matter of the heart. Before you ever open a Bible at the dinner table, five convictions will carry your family further than any technique. Settle these, and the practice will follow.
1. Start With the Importance of God's Word
Family worship rises or falls on one belief: that God still speaks through His Word, and that His Word is "living and powerful" (Hebrews 4:12). If the Bible is just a good book, family devotions will feel like a chore. But if it is the very voice of God to your household — able to make your children "wise unto salvation" (2 Timothy 3:15) — then gathering around it becomes the most important few minutes of your day.
Start here, because everything else flows from it. You are not merely sharing values; you are bringing your family under the Word that gives life.
2. Embrace Your Calling to Disciple Your Family
God has not left the discipleship of your children to the church alone. The command of Deuteronomy 6:6–7 is given to parents: teach these words "diligently unto thy children… when thou sittest in thine house." Fathers especially are charged to bring up their children "in the nurture and admonition of the Lord" (Ephesians 6:4).
This is your calling — not the pastor's, not the Sunday-school teacher's, yours. Embracing it changes everything. You stop waiting for someone else to disciple your children and accept that God has placed that joyful duty in your hands.
3. See Your Family as Your Most Important Ministry
Many believers long to serve God, and rightly so. But it is easy to pour ourselves into ministries beyond our front door while the souls under our own roof go untended. Scripture is clear that a man who "knoweth not how to rule his own house" is not yet ready to care for the church of God (1 Timothy 3:5). The Puritans called the home "a little church" for good reason.
Your family is not a distraction from ministry — your family is your first and most important ministry. The few children around your table are an eternal congregation entrusted to you alone. Treat those minutes accordingly.
4. You Don't Need to Be an Expert — Only Devoted to God
The single biggest reason parents never begin is the fear that they are not qualified. Let this set you free: God is not asking for a theologian at the head of the table. He is asking for a devoted heart. It takes only ordinary gifts to read a short passage, ask a simple question, sing a hymn, and pray. As Joel Beeke bluntly encourages parents who feel inadequate:
"Don't make this a mountain above what you need to make it; take it seriously, implement it humbly, simply… but just do it."— Joel Beeke
Your children do not need a polished performance. They need to see a parent who loves God enough to seek Him with them, day after day.
5. Then Simply Begin
Once your heart is settled, the method is the easy part. Don't wait for the perfect plan or the quiet, cooperative evening that may never come. Tonight, gather your family, sing one hymn, read a few verses, ask one question, and pray. That is family worship. Do it again tomorrow.
This is exactly what The Family Worship App is built to make effortless: every worship session brings a chapter of Scripture, a key truth, a heart question, and a fitting hymn together on one page — so a devoted (not expert) parent can lead with confidence from the very first night. For the practical rhythm, see our 10-minute daily plan.
