Deuteronomy 29: God warns against stubborn presumption

Begin in prayer

Before we come to the covenant warning in Moab, let us ask God to uncover false peace in our hearts. Pray that our family would hear His revealed word and seek mercy instead of defending stubborn sin.

If we have forgotten the name of our God, or spread out our hands to a strange god; won’t God search this out? For he knows the secrets of the heart.

Psalm 44:20-21

Father in heaven, You know the heart beneath our promises and religious words. Give us understanding as we hear Your warnings. Show us the danger of stubborn sin and the mercy of Christ, and lead us to trust Him. Please open our eyes as we read Your Word, make us more like Christ, and bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.

See where we're going

Moses recalls the LORD’s wonders, wilderness provision, and victories, yet says the people still lack the heart to understand. All ranks of Israel, including children and foreigners, stand before God to enter His covenant and oath. God establishes them as His people according to His promise to their fathers. The covenant also reaches those absent from the gathering. No person or family may turn to idols and claim peace while persisting in stubbornness. God will refuse that rebel pardon and bring the written curses, while later generations see the land ruined because Israel abandoned Him. Secret things belong to the LORD, while His revealed words belong to His people and their children so they may obey.

As you read Deuteronomy 29, look for the answers:

Reflect together

Key truth

God establishes His people by covenant and warns them against stubborn idolatry and false peace.

The covenant in Moab follows God’s rescue, forty years of preservation, and victories over Sihon and Og. Outward sight of His wonders has not supplied the heart, eyes, and ears needed to understand, because that gift comes from Him. Leaders, laborers, wives, children, and foreigners all stand before God, whose oath establishes Israel as His people. The obligation reaches beyond those present, giving the warning lasting force. A heart turned toward idols becomes like a root producing poison within the community. The person who claims peace while walking in stubbornness will receive no pardon, and God will blot out his name. Later generations and foreigners will see a scorched, barren land and learn that covenant abandonment brought this judgment and exile. God’s secret purposes remain His, while what He has revealed gives His people and their children a clear duty to obey.

How does Deuteronomy 29 show us that God establishes His people by covenant and warns them against stubborn idolatry and false peace?

God’s gifts require hearts that understand.

Israel has seen wonders and received provision through forty years in the wilderness. Yet Moses says the LORD has not given them a heart to understand. Outward privilege leaves them dependent on His grace.

Stubborn sin must never claim peace.

The warning addresses a heart turning away to serve other gods. Such a person may pronounce himself safe while continuing in rebellion. God refuses that false assurance and declares the full curse against him.

God reveals His word for obedience.

Future onlookers will learn why the land lies ruined. Its judgment will testify that Israel abandoned the LORD’s covenant. What God reveals belongs to His people and their children so they may do His law.

Memorise

Therefore Yahweh’s anger burned against this land, to bring on it all the curses that are written in this book.

Deuteronomy 29:27

Looking to Jesus in my life

Ask yourself in your heart, what peace do I claim while refusing to turn from a sin God exposes?

The rebel says, “I shall have peace, though I walk in the stubbornness of my heart”. God rejects that assurance and declares that He will not pardon him. Belonging outwardly among His people cannot shelter an unrepentant heart.

Jesus bore the punishment His people deserved for their stubborn sins. He died on the cross and rose from the grave. His completed offering is enough to secure forgiveness, and His mercy calls sinners out of the rebellion they would excuse.

Turn from false peace and come to Christ. Anyone who trusts Him has real peace with God. Ask God for the heart that hears His word, and follow the Savior who gives forgiveness instead of permission to remain in sin.

Parent's note

Tell your children why growing up among God’s people never makes stubborn sin safe. Explain the warning with its full seriousness, and point them to Christ’s welcome for those who repent and believe. Call each child to turn from sin and trust Jesus, and pray that God would give them a new heart. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home.

Pray together

Now please close your time together in prayer. Thank God for His revealed word, and bring the false peace in the heart question before Him. Every child can pray, so invite each one to seek mercy.

For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remains no more a sacrifice for sins, but a certain fearful expectation of judgment, and a fierceness of fire which will devour the adversaries.

Hebrews 10:26-27

Father in heaven, uncover the false peace we claim while defending our sin. Give us hearts that hear Your revealed word. Lead us to trust Christ’s completed and sufficient sacrifice, and teach those who believe to leave stubborn rebellion and walk in grateful obedience. In Jesus' name, Amen.
