Deuteronomy 33: God is His people’s everlasting refuge

Begin in prayer

Before hearing Moses bless the tribes, let us look to the eternal God who helps His people. Ask Him to teach our family gratitude for His gifts and faith in the Savior who gives a lasting refuge.

For you have been my help. I will rejoice in the shadow of your wings. My soul stays close to you. Your right hand holds me up.

Psalm 63:7-8

Father in heaven, Your people depend on Your love, provision, and saving strength. Help us hear the blessings Moses speaks before his death. Show us Christ and teach us to seek our safety in the eternal God. Please open our eyes as we read Your Word, make us more like Christ, and bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.

See where we're going

Before his death, Moses blesses Israel and recalls the LORD’s glorious coming to give His law. God loves the people, who receive His words as their inheritance. The tribal blessings seek life, help against enemies, faithful ministry, safety, fruitful land, and strength. Levi must teach the law and offer sacrifices, while Moses asks God to strike those who rise against Levi. Joseph receives a rich blessing of land and strength, and the remaining tribes receive words of provision, favor, and protection. The blessing ends by declaring the eternal God Israel’s dwelling place, with everlasting arms underneath and victory over enemies before them. Israel’s happiness rests in being a people saved by the LORD, who is their shield and sword.

Reflect together

Key truth

God blesses His people and remains their eternal dwelling place, help, and saving strength.

Moses blesses the tribes just before his death, and he begins with the LORD coming from Sinai with His law (verses 1 and 2). The LORD gave the law because He loves His people (verse 3). Moses prays for Judah, the tribe Jacob had said the King would come from (Genesis 49 verse 10). Levi had stood with the LORD against his own family at the golden calf (verse 9). So Levi was given the work of teaching the law and serving at the altar (verse 10). Joseph receives the richest land, with dew, harvests and strong hills (verses 13 to 17). But every gift points back to the Giver, “The eternal God is your dwelling place” (verse 27). Israel is happy because they are “a people saved by Yahweh” (verse 29), and God saves His people through His Son.

How does Deuteronomy 33 show us that God blesses His people and remains their eternal dwelling place, help, and saving strength?

God’s love gives His people His word.

The LORD’s glorious coming brings His law to the gathered people. They receive His words as an inheritance. His love calls them to listen at His feet.

God supplies His people’s varied needs.

The tribal blessings ask for life, fruitful land, faithful service, and help against enemies. These gifts belong within Israel’s shared life before God. Each tribe depends on His favor for the part entrusted to it.

God Himself is His people’s refuge.

The eternal God is Israel’s dwelling place, with everlasting arms beneath them. He drives out their enemies and commands their destruction. The people are happy because the LORD saves and helps them.

Memorise

The eternal God is your dwelling place. Underneath are the everlasting arms.

Looking to Jesus in my life

Ask yourself in your heart, what do I trust more than God, and why do I need Jesus?

“The eternal God is your dwelling place,” Moses declares. The blessings point beyond land and harvest to the LORD whose everlasting arms sustain His people. Their lasting safety depends on Him.

Jesus bore the punishment of His people at the cross, bringing them to God. He rose from death and lives to intercede for those who come to God through Him (Hebrews 7 verse 25). His saving sacrifice is finished, and nothing more is needed for His people’s forgiveness and lasting refuge.

Turn from sin and take refuge in Him. No one who takes refuge in Him is ever turned away. He grants forgiveness to all who seek Him by faith. The eternal Savior will never cease to help His people.

Parent's note

Tell your children why Moses could bless Israel even while preparing to die. Help them distinguish gratitude for God’s gifts from trusting those gifts as their lasting refuge. Call each child to turn from sin and trust Jesus, and pray that God would give them a new heart. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home.

Pray together

Now please close your time together in prayer. Thank God for His everlasting help, and bring the temporary support in the heart question before Him. Every child can pray, so welcome each one’s request to trust Christ.

But now they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed of them, to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them.

Hebrews 11:16

Father in heaven, thank You for the gifts that meet Your people’s varied needs. Lead us to trust the Savior whose finished sacrifice is enough for forgiveness. Teach those who believe to rest in Your everlasting help and to hold every earthly gift with gratitude and faith. In Jesus' name, Amen.
