Deuteronomy 8: God teaches His people dependence
Begin in prayer
Before remembering the wilderness journey, let us thank the Lord for the food and strength He gives. Ask Him to teach our family dependence on His word and faith in Christ.
You drench its furrows. You level its ridges. You soften it with showers. You bless it with a crop.
Psalm 65:10
Father in heaven, every meal and every breath depend on You. Teach us to listen to Your word and remember Your goodness. Humble our proud hearts, and lead us to the Savior who trusted You perfectly. Please open our eyes as we read Your Word, make us more like Christ, and bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.
See where we're going
Moses tells Israel to remember the whole wilderness journey. God humbled them through hunger and fed them with manna, teaching that life depends on His word. Their clothes and feet bore witness to His care through forty years. The fertile land ahead will give them reasons to bless Him. Yet its abundance could tempt them to credit their own strength and forget Him. Moses warns that following other gods will bring destruction.
As you read Deuteronomy 8, look for the answers:
- What did hunger and manna teach Israel? (verses 2 and 3)
- What danger would come with abundance? (verses 11 to 20)
Reflect together
Key truth
God humbles His people and sustains them by His word.
Hunger exposed Israel’s dependence on the LORD, and manna showed His power to sustain them. Bread cannot preserve life apart from the God whose word gives it. His wilderness discipline was the care of a father training his son. The good land would change their circumstances without changing their need for Him. Wealth could deceive them into praising the strength of their own hands. Moses therefore commands gratitude before abundance becomes forgetfulness. In the wilderness He gave them water from a rock and fed them manna, to do them good in the end (verse 16).
How does Deuteronomy 8 show us that God humbles His people and sustains them by His word?
God sustains life by His word.
The LORD allowed His people to become hungry. He then provided food they had never known. Their lives depended on His command and care through every day of the journey.
God’s discipline trains His people.
Moses compares God’s dealings with a father training his son. The hard journey taught Israel to fear Him and walk in His ways. Comfort was never the measure of His faithful care.
God must be remembered in plenty.
A full table can hide the dependence that hunger makes plain. Israel must bless God for the good land and the power to gain wealth. Forgetting Him and following other gods would end in destruction.
Memorise
man does not live by bread only, but man lives by every word that proceeds out of Yahweh’s mouth.
Deuteronomy 8:3
Looking to Jesus in my life
Ask yourself in your heart, what am I hungry for that only Jesus can give?
“Man does not live by bread only, but man lives by every word that proceeds out of Yahweh’s mouth,” Moses teaches. Israel’s hunger tested whether they would trust God. Jesus faced hunger in the wilderness and answered the tempter with this truth.
Where sinners distrust God and demand their own way, His Son obeyed. On the cross Jesus paid for His people’s proud unbelief with His own life. He rose victorious, and His finished sacrifice is enough for every sinner who takes refuge in Him.
Give up the claim that your strength can sustain or save you. Turn from it and trust Christ, who forgives whoever comes to Him. Those who belong to Him can depend on God through both need and abundance.
Parent's note
Tell your children that every meal comes from God, who fed Israel with manna. Explain that gratitude and good manners cannot establish that a child has saving faith in Christ. Call each child to turn from sin and trust Jesus, and pray that God would give them a new heart. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home.
Pray together
Now please close your time together in prayer. Thank God for sustaining life, and bring the pride exposed by the heart question to Him. Every child can pray, so welcome each child’s words of thanks and need.
Jesus answered him, saying, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.’”
Luke 4:4
Father in heaven, thank You that You sustain Your people by Your word. Forgive the pride that takes credit for Your gifts. Lead us to trust the obedient Savior and to receive Your word with faith. Help those who belong to Christ remember You in need and abundance. In Jesus' name, Amen.
