Ecclesiastes 10: God’s wisdom makes words gracious

Begin in prayer

Before we read how a little folly spoils much good, let us ask God to make our words gracious through His wisdom, and to help us see Christ in this chapter.

Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, Yahweh, my rock, and my redeemer.

Psalm 19:14

Father in heaven, please open our eyes as we read Your Word. Help us speak with grace, work with care and restrain our angry words. Show us the harm of folly, and show us Jesus, whose words are full of grace. Make us more like Jesus. And please bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.

See where we're going

Dead flies spoil perfume, just as a little folly can outweigh wisdom and honor. Gentleness can calm a ruler’s anger, while foolish rulers give dignity to folly and reverse expected places of honor. Ordinary work carries dangers, and a sharpened axe shows the value of skill. Wise words are gracious, but a fool’s multiplying speech ends in destructive madness and exposes ignorance of the future. A land suffers when rulers indulge themselves and benefits when they eat at the proper time for strength. Neglect ruins a house, and rulers who feast for laughter look to money to answer everything. Even private curses against kings or the rich may become known.

As you read Ecclesiastes 10, look for the answers:

Reflect together

Key truth

A little folly spoils much good, and God’s wisdom makes our words gracious.

Dead flies spoil perfume, showing how a little folly can damage wisdom and honor. Right and left picture how wisdom and folly lead our hearts in different directions. Under the sun the Preacher sees “an evil” (verse 5), the error that comes from a ruler. Gentleness can settle offenses when a ruler becomes angry. Rulers who make feasts for laughter treat money as the answer for all things, while their land suffers (verses 16 to 19). Our private curses may become known, and foolish talk multiplies claims about a future no person knows. Gracious words bring help instead of the ruin caused by a fool’s lips. The same need for care appears in work, where a sharp axe saves strength and neglect lets a roof decay. Jesus is the One whose gracious words made people wonder (Luke 4 verse 22).

How does Ecclesiastes 10 show us that a little folly spoils much good, and God’s wisdom makes our words gracious?

God’s wisdom teaches restraint when authority becomes difficult.

Gentleness can lay a ruler’s anger to rest. Folly in high places can also turn proper order upside down. Private curses are dangerous words that may travel beyond the room.

God’s wisdom values skill and care in ordinary work.

A worker faces hazards when digging, cutting or breaking through a wall. Sharpening an axe helps more than spending extra strength on a blunt edge. Neglect also damages the house that needs attention.

God’s wisdom commends gracious speech above multiplying words.

The wise person’s words are gracious. The fool’s lips consume him as his talk moves into madness. More words cannot supply the knowledge of the future he lacks.

Memorise

The words of a wise man’s mouth are gracious; but a fool is swallowed by his own lips.

Ecclesiastes 10:12

Looking to Jesus in my life

Ask yourself in your heart, where do my foolish words show my need for Jesus to change my heart?

A little folly can ruin much good, and the fool “is swallowed by his own lips”. Our careless words expose sins deeper than a slip of the tongue. We need forgiveness and hearts that learn wisdom.

Jesus spoke without deceit and did not answer curses with curses. He entrusted Himself to the righteous Judge (1 Peter 2 verses 21 to 24). He offered His own body for His people on the cross. There He took away the guilt of their careless words and every other sin. His offering was made once for all, sufficient to reconcile them to God. Death lost its hold when He rose, and His people now have a living Lord.

Turn from sin and put your trust in Jesus. He grants pardon to those who come to Him for forgiveness. Receive His mercy from the Savior whose own words were so gracious that people wondered at them (Luke 4 verse 22).

Parent's note

Tell your children that wise manners cannot remove their guilt. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home. Call them to turn from sin and trust Jesus and His saving work. Pray for new hearts that love Him and learn His wisdom.

Pray together

Now please close your time together in prayer. Thank God for the gracious Savior and for wisdom that reaches our words and daily work. Bring the heart question to Him. Every child can pray, so let each one say a short prayer if they want to.

All testified about him, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth,

Luke 4:22

God of wisdom, forgive the careless and angry words we have spoken. Please bring us to Jesus for pardon and hearts renewed by Your grace. Teach our family to speak kindly, receive correction and work with care. Give us restraint when others provoke us and humility to learn what we do not yet understand. Amen.
