Exodus

Exodus 13: God claims and leads His people

Begin in prayer

Before Israel takes the wilderness road, let us thank the Lord who claims and guides those He redeems. Ask Him to teach us dependence and to help our children hear the story of His rescue.

For he remembered his holy word, and Abraham, his servant.

Psalm 105:42

Father in heaven, please open our eyes as we read Your Word. Show us that redemption brings people under Your care and rule. Teach us to follow Jesus and to speak of Him in our home. Make us more like Jesus. And please bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.

See where we're going

God commands that Israel’s firstborn be set apart to Him and that the rescue be remembered with bread without yeast. Parents must explain to their sons that the LORD brought them out with a strong hand. The firstborn sons must be redeemed, and the firstborn donkey must be redeemed with a lamb or killed. God leads Israel away from the nearer Philistine road because seeing war might send them back to Egypt. Moses carries Joseph’s bones as promised, and the people camp on the wilderness edge. The LORD goes before them in a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night.

As you read Exodus 13, look for the answers:

Reflect together

Key truth

God claims the people He redeemed and leads them on their journey.

The firstborn belong to the LORD because He spared them when Egypt’s firstborn died. To sanctify means to set apart for God, so the command gives the rescue an ongoing place in Israel’s life. The firstborn sons are redeemed, and a donkey must be redeemed with a lamb or die. Parents must explain the reason when their children ask, connecting the household’s practice to God’s mighty deliverance. The feast without yeast keeps the same rescue before their mouths and minds. God also governs the road, avoiding the nearer route because war might make the people return to Egypt. Joseph’s bones travel with them, carrying a promise from Genesis into its fulfilment. Cloud and fire make God’s guidance visible by day and night. Redemption brings a people under God’s claim and care, a truth fulfilled in those Christ buys for Himself.

How does Exodus 13 show us that God claims the people He redeemed and leads them on their journey?

The rescued firstborn belong to the LORD.

God commands the firstborn sons to be redeemed, rather than sacrificed. A lamb redeems the firstborn donkey, which otherwise must die. These duties keep God’s saving claim before the households He spared.

God gives parents a rescue to teach their children.

The feast and the firstborn duty prompt a son’s questions. The answer tells what God did when Pharaoh refused to release them. Fathers lead their households in this teaching, with mothers sharing the work of leading children to Christ. Both bear God’s image with equal worth (Genesis 1 verse 27).

God leads His people on the road He knows they need.

The nearer route would expose them to war and the temptation to return. God chooses the wilderness and goes before them without departing. The Lord who redeems also leads, and Christ calls His people to follow Him.

Memorise

“Sanctify to me all the firstborn, whatever opens the womb among the children of Israel, both of man and of animal. It is mine.”

Exodus 13:2

Looking to Jesus in my life

Ask yourself in your heart, where am I resisting the guidance of Jesus, who alone can save me?

God says of the firstborn, “It is mine.” The spared life belongs to Him. Then He leads the redeemed people into the wilderness, and His cloud and fire do not leave them.

Christ buys His people at a greater cost than any household could pay. We are guilty sinners, and He carried their sin to the cross, receiving its judgment in His own body. He rose to life, showing that death has lost its claim on Him. He has done all that was needed to rescue His people, and His sacrifice is enough.

Turn from your sin and put your trust in Jesus. Through Him the repentant find forgiveness and belong to God. The Savior who purchases His people also leads them. Follow Him, and teach your children to seek the Redeemer whose care does not depart.

Parent's note

Tell your children that God claimed the lives He spared and guided Israel, and that Jesus died and rose as Redeemer. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home. Call each child to turn from sin and trust Jesus, and pray that God would give them a new heart.

Pray together

Now please close your time together in prayer. Thank God for His redeeming claim and His constant guidance, and bring the heart question to Him. Every child can pray, so let each one say a short prayer if they want to.

Whenever he brings out his own sheep, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice.

John 10:4

Lord, thank You for guiding Israel by cloud and fire. Please teach our family to depend on Your wisdom. Turn us from sin and lead us to trust Jesus. Help parents explain Your rescue, and make children willing to hear and seek the Savior for themselves. Amen.
