Exodus

Exodus 17: God gives water and victory

Begin in prayer

Before thirst and battle press upon Israel at Rephidim, let us ask God to teach us dependence. Pray that questioning hearts will hear His word and look to Christ for the life they need.

My help comes from Yahweh, who made heaven and earth.

Psalm 121:2

Father in heaven, please open our eyes as we read Your Word. Help us see Your patient provision and Your power to rescue. Show us Christ, the source of life for needy sinners. Make us more like Jesus. And please bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.

See where we're going

At Rephidim Israel has no water and quarrels with Moses, questioning whether the LORD is among them. Moses cries to God, who tells him to strike the rock at Horeb before the elders. Water comes out for the people to drink, and Moses names the place for their testing and quarrel. Amalek then attacks, and Joshua leads Israel into battle while Moses stands on the hill with God’s rod. Aaron and Hur support his hands until sunset, and Joshua defeats Amalek. God declares that Amalek’s memory will be blotted out, and Moses builds an altar naming the LORD as their banner.

As you read Exodus 17, look for the answers:

Key truth

God supplies His people’s need and gives victory as they depend on Him.

Israel reaches a waterless camp by God’s command, so their need does not mean He has led them wrongly. Their quarrel questions whether the LORD is among them, despite His visible guidance. Moses cries out when they are almost ready to stone him. The rod used against the Nile now strikes the rock, and God gives water before the watching elders. The place names preserve the memory of testing and quarreling. Paul identifies the spiritual rock from which Israel drank with Christ (1 Corinthians 10 verse 4). When Amalek attacks, Joshua fights while Moses holds God’s rod above the battle. Aaron and Hur support his heavy hands, showing that even the leader depends on help. God gives victory and declares His lasting war against Amalek, to be recorded for Joshua.

How does Exodus 17 show us that God supplies His people’s need and gives victory as they depend on Him?

God provides water for people who question His presence.

Moses takes the elders and the rod as God commands. God stands before him at the rock, and water comes when he strikes it. The gift exposes how wrong Israel was to doubt His care.

God gives victory through dependent people.

Joshua fights, while Moses holds God’s rod above the battle. Aaron and Hur steady his weary hands until sunset. The victory belongs to the LORD, whose power is greater than the strength of those He uses.

God remembers the attack and promises judgment.

The LORD commands a written record for Joshua and declares that He will blot out Amalek’s memory. Moses builds an altar called “Yahweh our Banner.” God’s people gather under His saving rule, which finds its lasting triumph in Christ.

Memorise

You shall strike the rock, and water will come out of it, that the people may drink.

Exodus 17:6

Looking to Jesus in my life

Ask yourself in your heart, where have I doubted God’s care instead of seeking life in Christ?

The people ask, “Is Yahweh among us, or not?” God answers their quarrel by giving water from the rock. Paul directs the church from that spiritual provision to Christ (1 Corinthians 10 verse 4).

The need of a sinful heart cannot be met by water alone. Jesus carried the sin of His people at the cross and died under the judgment it deserved. He rose with His people’s rescue fully accomplished, and His sacrifice is enough for every guilty person who trusts Him.

Turn from your sin and put your trust in Jesus. Let your thirst for mercy lead you to Him. Those who believe receive forgiveness and the life He gives by His Spirit. The Savior’s supply cannot be exhausted by the needs of His people.

Parent's note

Tell your children that God gave water and victory despite Israel’s doubts, and that Christ died and rose to give life. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home. Call each child to turn from sin and trust Jesus, and pray that God would give them a new heart.

Pray together

Now please close your time together in prayer. Thank God for giving water, sustaining weak servants and defeating the enemy, and bring the heart question to Him. Every child can pray, so let each one say a short prayer if they want to.

He who believes in me, as the Scripture has said, from within him will flow rivers of living water.”

John 7:38

Lord God, thank You for meeting Israel’s need when they doubted You. Forgive the distrust in our hearts. Please lead us to Jesus for forgiveness and life. Help us support those who are tired, and make us willing to depend on Your strength in every duty. Amen.
