Ezekiel 41: God shows His holy house
Begin in prayer
Before entering the house with Ezekiel, let us remember the holiness of the God worshiped there. Ask Him to quiet our hearts and be near our family, teaching us to recognize Christ as we read Ezekiel 41.
‘The latter glory of this house will be greater than the former,’ says Yahweh of Armies; ‘and in this place will I give peace,’ says Yahweh of Armies.”
Haggai 2:9
Father in heaven, please open our eyes as we read Your Word. Help us understand the holiness of Your house and see Jesus, who brings His people before You through His saving blood. Make us more like Jesus. And please bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.
See where we're going
The guide brings Ezekiel into the temple, measures its entrances and names the inner room the most holy place. Side rooms rise in three stories, becoming wider as the walls narrow above. He measures the raised base, surrounding spaces and separate western building. Cherubim and palm trees cover walls and doors, with each cherub showing a human face and a young lion's face. A wooden altar is called the table before the LORD. The account ends with the doors, windows, palm trees and wooden features of the house's porch.
As you read Ezekiel 41, look for the answers:
- What is the inner room called? (verse 4)
- Why do the side rooms become wider above? (verse 7)
- What is the wooden altar called? (verse 22)
Reflect together
Key truth
God reveals the holiness and ordered beauty of His house, where service takes place before Him.
The name most holy place explains why this measured house calls for reverence toward the God served within it. Like Solomon's inner sanctuary, the room is twenty cubits square (1 Kings 6 verse 20). Its place within the temple distinguishes the innermost room from the surrounding structure, giving the hearer a way to follow the plan. The side rooms widen upward because the supporting walls narrow, explaining how three stories fit around the house. Cherubim and palm trees give the walls and doors a repeated design, joining beauty to the ordered measurements. The faces shown here are human and lion, exactly the pair the vision describes. Calling the wooden altar the table before the LORD places its service in relation to His presence. For captives whose city was struck, the revealed house presents holy service before God as the purpose of this detailed plan.
How does Ezekiel 41 show us that God reveals the holiness and ordered beauty of His house, where service takes place before Him?
God reveals a place marked by holiness.
The guide measures the temple and its inner room (verses 1 to 4). He names the inner room the most holy place. Its holiness governs how the hearer understands the rest of the house.
God shows a house with ordered provision.
Side rooms stand in three stories around the house (verses 5 to 15). They widen as the walls narrow above. The raised base and surrounding spaces belong to the measured arrangement.
God places holy service before His presence.
Cherubim and palm trees decorate the walls and doors (verses 16 to 26). The wooden altar is called the table before the LORD. The house's beauty surrounds service offered before Him.
Memorize
He measured its length, twenty cubits, and the width, twenty cubits, before the temple: and he said to me, This is the most holy place.
Ezekiel 41:4
Looking to Jesus in my life
Ask yourself in your heart, do I forget how holy God is? Have I come to Him through Jesus?
The guide names the inner room, “This is the most holy place”. The measured house leads the hearer to consider the holiness of the God worshiped there. Even the wooden altar is described as a table before Him. Service in this house takes place in His presence.
Jesus entered heaven itself to appear before God for His people (Hebrews 9 verse 24). He died for them, bearing the guilt of their sins and the punishment they deserved. His finished sacrifice fully secures their welcome before the holy God. He rose from the dead and lives to represent those He redeemed.
Turn from your sin and trust Jesus, the living Savior. Every repentant sinner who comes to Him is forgiven. Please ask Him to give you reverence for God's holiness and confidence in His completed saving work. Those who believe in Him can approach God through the blood that has secured their peace.
Parent's note
Tell your children that Jesus died and rose to bring guilty people before the holy God. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home. Call each child to turn from sin and trust Jesus, and pray that God would give them a new heart.
Pray together
Now please close your time together in prayer. Thank God for revealing His holiness and bringing sinners near through Jesus, and bring the heart question to Him. Every child can pray, so let each one say a short prayer if they want to.
because it is written, “You shall be holy; for I am holy.”
1 Peter 1:16
Father, thank You for revealing Your holiness and giving a Savior who brings guilty people near. Forgive our careless worship, and help each one repent and believe in Jesus. Please teach us reverence for Your presence and trust in the sacrifice that secures welcome for all who come to Him. Amen.
