Ezekiel 47: God brings life and gives inheritance
Begin in prayer
Before seeing the river that brings life, let us consider the Lord whose sanctuary is its source. Ask God to quiet our thoughts, meet with our family and open our eyes to Christ as we read.
It will happen in that day, I will respond,” says Yahweh, “I will respond to the heavens, and they will respond to the earth; and the earth will respond to the grain, and the new wine, and the oil; and they will respond to Jezreel.
Hosea 2:21-22
Father in heaven, please open our eyes as we read Your Word. Help us understand the life and healing You give, and show us Jesus, who gives His Spirit to those who believe. Make us more like Jesus. And please bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.
See where we're going
Water flows from the house and deepens through measured stages until it becomes a river Ezekiel cannot cross. Its waters heal the sea and bring abundant life and fish, while marshes remain unhealed and given to salt. Trees along the banks bear unfailing leaves and monthly fruit, providing food and healing because their water comes from the sanctuary. God then appoints boundaries for the land promised by oath to the fathers. The tribes receive inheritance, with two portions for Joseph. Resident foreigners who raise children among Israel share inheritance as native born people within the tribes where they live.
As you read Ezekiel 47, look for the answers:
- Where does the water come from? (verse 1)
- Why do the trees keep bearing fruit? (verse 12)
- Who receives inheritance alongside Israel's tribes? (verses 22 and 23)
Reflect together
Key truth
God brings life and healing from His sanctuary and gives His people a shared inheritance.
The river begins at the house where God's glory has returned, placing the source of this life within His sanctuary. Its measured deepening carries Ezekiel from ankle deep water to a river beyond his ability to cross. The waters heal the sea, and abundant fish make visible the life that flows wherever the river reaches. Marshes remain unhealed and given to salt, preserving the limit the vision itself names. The trees' unfailing leaves and monthly fruit are explained by the waters coming from the sanctuary, so their supply depends on that source. Food and healing show what this abundant provision gives to those around the river. God's land promise likewise depends on His sworn word to the fathers, with portions appointed for the tribes and two for Joseph. Resident foreigners who have children among Israel share inheritance as native born people in the tribes where they live. The vision joins life flowing from God's dwelling with His faithful provision of a place among His people.
How does Ezekiel 47 show us that God brings life and healing from His sanctuary and gives His people a shared inheritance?
God sends life from His sanctuary.
The water flows from the house and becomes too deep to cross (verses 1 to 12). The sea is healed and fish abound. Trees bear monthly fruit and healing leaves because their water comes from the sanctuary.
God keeps His sworn promise of inheritance.
God appoints the land's boundaries and tribal inheritance (verses 13 to 21). Joseph receives two portions. God's oath to the fathers gives the reason His people receive the land.
God gives resident foreigners a share.
Foreigners who live and raise children among Israel share the inheritance (verses 22 and 23). They are treated as native born people. Their portion belongs within the tribe where they live.
Memorize
the waters of the sea shall be healed, and everything shall live wherever the river comes.
Ezekiel 47:9
Looking to Jesus in my life
Ask yourself in your heart, where do I seek life apart from God? Have I come to Jesus for it?
The vision declares, “everything shall live wherever the river comes”. Water from God's sanctuary heals the sea and feeds trees whose fruit does not fail. Life and healing depend on the source God provides. The promised inheritance also rests on His faithful word.
Jesus calls thirsty people to come and believe, promising the Spirit as living water (John 7 verses 37 to 39). He died in His people's place, carrying their sins and bearing God's wrath against them. His sacrifice completed their redemption and supplies all they need for peace with God. He rose from death, and the living Savior gives life to those who trust Him.
Turn from your sin and trust Jesus for salvation. Forgiveness is His promise to everyone who comes. Please bring Him the spiritual need you have tried to satisfy elsewhere. Ask Him to give you His Spirit and a heart that receives life from the Savior whose saving work is finished.
Parent's note
Tell your children that Jesus died and rose to bring sinners forgiveness and life through His Spirit. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home. Call each child to turn from sin and trust Jesus, and pray that God would give them a new heart.
Pray together
Now please close your time together in prayer. Thank God for the life and healing He gives and His faithful promise, and bring the heart question to Him. Every child can pray, so let each one say a short prayer if they want to.
He showed me a river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb, in the middle of its street. On this side of the river and on that was the tree of life, bearing twelve kinds of fruits, yielding its fruit every month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.
Revelation 22:1-2
Lord, thank You for the life and healing You give through Jesus and the Spirit He pours out. Forgive our search for life away from You, and help each one turn from sin and trust Him. Please give us hearts that receive Your mercy and depend on the Savior who died and rose. Amen.
