Ezra 2: God brings captives back
Begin in prayer
Before the long list of returning captives, please remember whose work made this return possible, and come before God. Ask Him to help us hear these names patiently and to see our need for Jesus, the perfect Priest.
When Yahweh brought back those who returned to Zion, we were like those who dream.
Psalm 126:1
Father in heaven, open our eyes as we read about the people who returned from captivity. Help us understand Your Word and see Jesus, the perfect Priest. Make us more like Him, and please bless our family as we listen and worship together. In Jesus' name, Amen.
See where we're going
The captives Nebuchadnezzar took to Babylon return to Jerusalem and Judah, each to his own city. Their names record the families God has brought home for restored worship. Priests return alongside Levites, singers, gatekeepers and temple servants. Some priests cannot find their family records, so the governor tells them to wait for a priest with the Urim and Thummim. Some family heads give willingly for God's house, according to their ability. The people settle in their cities, ready for the work ahead.
As you read Ezra 2, look for the answers:
- Where do the people return after captivity? (verse 1)
- Why are some removed from the priesthood? (verses 61 to 63)
- What do some heads of fathers' households give for God's house? (verses 68 and 69)
Reflect together
Key truth
God brings His people home by name to worship Him in His house.
These names show what God's promised return looked like in the lives of actual families. Captivity had scattered Israel, yet it had not erased their place among His people. The returning company needs priests, gatekeepers, singers and servants because its life is to center on worship. Family records matter for a priest because God had appointed Aaron's descendants to that office (Exodus 28 verse 1). A claim to belong could not replace the evidence required for that service. The gifts at the end show why this company has come home. God's house is to stand again, with people willing to serve Him and give according to their ability.
How does Ezra 2 show that God brings His people home by name to worship Him in His house?
God brought each family home to its own city.
The long list gives names to the people brought back from captivity. Each family returns to its own city. Priests and servants return with them because worship needs to be restored along with homes.
The priests needed their family records.
Priestly service required descent from the family God had appointed. Without the family records these men could not claim its privileges or eat the most holy things. Urim and Thummim belonged to the priest's way of seeking God's judgment (Exodus 28 verse 30). The governor told them to wait “until a priest stood up to serve with Urim and with Thummim” (verse 63). The people waited for a priest who could bring God's answer, and Jesus is the great Priest God gave.
Some family heads gave willingly for God's house.
Their giving is willing and measured by their ability. They bring gold, silver and priests' garments to help restore worship. The returned people share in restoring the place where they will worship.
Memorise
Some of the heads of fathers’ households, when they came to Yahweh’s house which is in Jerusalem, offered willingly for God’s house
Ezra 2:68
Looking to Jesus in my life
Ask yourself in your heart, what makes me think I can come to God without Jesus?
The returned families “offered willingly for God’s house.” Yet some men claiming priestly service could not find their place in the records. A gift or a family claim could not set aside God's appointed way of worship.
Jesus is the sinless Priest who lives forever and saves those who approach God through Him (Hebrews 7 verses 24 to 27). Our sin leaves us needing His sacrifice, however honored our family name may be. He offered Himself on the cross as His people's substitute, and the judgment against their sins fell on Him. That offering was made once for all, and it is enough. He rose victorious over death and now speaks for His people before God.
Bring Him your need. Turn from your sin and trust Jesus alone. By faith in Him the guilty receive forgiveness and are counted righteous. This Priest who rose from the dead is the One through whom sinners may draw near.
Parent's note
Tell your children that Jesus, the perfect Priest, offered Himself so that sinners can come to God. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home. Call each child to turn from sin and trust Jesus, and pray that God would give them a new heart.
Pray together
Now please close your time together in prayer. Thank God for the return of the captives and for Jesus, the perfect Priest. Bring the heart question to Him. Every child can pray, and each one may offer a short prayer if they want to.
Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.”
John 6:29
Father, thank You for bringing captives back to Jerusalem and Judah. Thank You for Jesus, the perfect Priest. Please give each child a new heart to repent and trust Him. Keep us from resting on our family name, and help us worship You through Christ. Amen.
