Genesis 11: God stops pride and prepares blessing

Begin in prayer

Before we read how God stopped the proud builders and kept the Savior's family line, let us humble ourselves before Him. Ask Him to expose our desire for praise and help us see the grace He gives through Jesus.

Yahweh brings the counsel of the nations to nothing. He makes the thoughts of the peoples to be of no effect. The counsel of Yahweh stands fast forever, the thoughts of his heart to all generations.

Psalm 33:10-11

Father in heaven, please open our eyes to see Your rule over human plans and Your faithfulness through the generations. Show us Jesus, who humbled Himself to save sinners. Make us more like Him, willing to obey without seeking praise. Please bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.

See where we're going

While the earth shares one language, people settle in Shinar and plan a city and tower to secure their name and prevent scattering. The LORD inspects their work, confuses their language and scatters them, so they stop building the city called Babel. The account then follows Shem's family through the generations until Terah fathers Abram, Nahor and Haran. Haran dies in Ur, leaving his son Lot, while Abram marries Sarai, who has no child. Terah takes Abram, Sarai and Lot toward Canaan, yet the family settles in Haran. The chapter ends with Terah's death there, preparing for God's word to Abram.

Key truth

God stops the proud builders and preserves the family through which His Savior will come.

After listing the nations, Genesis explains their scattering through people who seek a lasting name and refuse to spread across the earth. Their fired bricks and tar suit Shinar's plain, where stone is scarce, giving their ambition a durable building material. God comes down to inspect the tower, exposing how small their achievement remains before the Lord of heaven. Confusing their speech stops the shared project and brings the scattering they tried to prevent, restraining their united rebellion. The account then follows Shem's descendants, preserving the line that Luke will name among Jesus' ancestors (Luke 3 verses 34 to 36). The genealogy records births across shortening lives, so God's saving purpose advances through generations that human strength cannot preserve forever. It reaches Abram's household through a death in Ur, a journey that stops in Haran and Sarai's inability to have children. The next chapter's blessing will therefore depend on God's power to give what this family cannot produce. Human pride cannot build security before God, while His grace prepares the Savior through a family that needs His help.

How does Genesis 11 show us that God stops the proud builders and preserves the family through which His Savior will come?

God sees people seeking their own name and resisting His command.

The builders settle in Shinar and use fired bricks and tar to make a city and a tower. They state their aim, a name for themselves and protection against being scattered. Their skill serves a refusal to fill the earth as God commanded Noah's family. We share their pride when reputation governs our obedience, exposing our need for the Savior who humbled Himself for sinners.

God confuses their speech and scatters them across the earth.

The LORD comes down to see the tower whose builders hoped to reach the sky. Their shared speech has strengthened a common rebellion, so God breaks their ability to carry it through. They stop building and spread across the earth, finding their plan subject to His rule. The God who restrains the proud gives sinners hope through Christ, whose obedient humility leads Him to the cross.

God brings the family line to Abram and childless Sarai.

Shem's descendants lead to Terah, whose son Haran dies in Ur and leaves Lot behind. Terah takes Abram, Sarai and Lot toward Canaan, yet they settle in Haran, where Terah dies. Sarai has no child, leaving the family that will receive God's promise unable to supply the next generation itself. God's grace will carry His promise through this weakness toward Jesus, whose coming depends on His Father's faithful purpose.

Memorise

So Yahweh scattered them abroad from there on the surface of all the earth. They stopped building the city.

Genesis 11:8

Looking to Jesus in my life

Ask yourself in your heart, what praise am I seeking that I must confess to Jesus?

The builders say, “let’s make a name for ourselves”, yet God scatters them and brings their work to an end. Then the family record moves toward Abram and Sarai, a couple who cannot secure their own future. God is preparing a blessing that human pride cannot build.

We also seek worth through the name we make, and our disobedience deserves the judgment of the God we resist. Jesus humbled Himself and obeyed His Father through death on the cross, then received the name above every name (Philippians 2 verses 8 and 9). There He bore the punishment for His people's sin, securing their pardon through His death. He rose from the dead, and His finished sacrifice is enough to make guilty people right with God.

Turn from living for your own reputation and trust the Savior God has given. Everyone who repents and believes in Jesus receives forgiveness. If you belong to Him, you can obey when faithfulness costs you praise, because His acceptance rests on what He has accomplished. Please rest your hope in Christ and the faithful purpose that brought Him into the world.

Parent's note

Tell your children that people cannot build their own safety before God, and His grace provides the Savior they need. Jesus humbled Himself to bear His people's punishment and rose again, giving forgiveness to everyone who repents and trusts Him. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home. Call each child to turn from sin and trust Jesus, and pray that God would give them a new heart.

Pray together

Now please close your time together in prayer. Thank God for His faithful saving purpose, and bring the heart question to Him. Every child can pray, so invite each one to ask for a humble heart that listens to His Word if they want to.

And being found in human form, he humbled himself, becoming obedient to death, yes, the death of the cross. Therefore God also highly exalted him, and gave to him the name which is above every name;

Philippians 2:8-9

Lord God, Your purpose stands when our proud plans fail. Please lead us to repent of living for praise and trust Jesus, who humbled Himself to save His people. Thank You for His sufficient sacrifice and risen life. Teach us to obey Your Word with gratitude, even when no one notices, this week. Amen.
