Genesis 12: God calls and keeps His promise
Begin in prayer
Before we read God's call to Abram and His promise of blessing for the nations, let us ask for faith in His Word. Ask Him to show us Christ, whose mercy meets the failure and fear we bring before Him.
May God be merciful to us, bless us, and cause his face to shine on us. Selah. That your way may be known on earth, and your salvation among all nations,
Psalm 67:1-2
Father in heaven, please open our eyes to understand the blessing You promised and the faithfulness that keeps it. Show us Jesus, who bore the curse for His people. Make us more like Him, trusting You and speaking truth when we are afraid. Please bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.
See where we're going
God calls Abram to leave his home and promises a nation, a great name and blessing for all the families of the earth. Abram travels to Canaan, where the LORD promises the occupied land to his offspring, and he builds altars to worship Him. A severe famine then takes him to Egypt, where he fears being killed because of Sarai's beauty. He asks her to say she is his sister, and Pharaoh takes her into his household while treating Abram well. The LORD strikes Pharaoh's household with plagues because of Sarai, exposing the marriage Abram has hidden. Pharaoh rebukes him and sends him away with his wife and all he has.
As you read Genesis 12, look for the answers:
- What does God promise through Abram? (verses 2 to 3)
- What does Abram ask Sarai to say, and why? (verses 11 to 13)
- Why does the LORD strike Pharaoh's household? (verse 17)
Reflect together
Key truth
God calls Abram and keeps His promise to bless the nations, even when Abram fails.
After the nations scatter and Sarai's childlessness leaves the family without an heir, God speaks promises that depend on His own power. He promises a nation, a great name and blessing for all families, blessing those who bless Abram and cursing whoever curses him. Abram goes because God has spoken, receiving a promise before his obedience can earn anything. In Canaan he lives in tents among people who already occupy the land God promises to his offspring. His altars answer God's word with worship, yet the promised land soon has a famine that drives him to Egypt. Canaan depends on rainfall, while Egypt's Nile provides irrigation, explaining why hunger takes a herding household there. Abram then conceals his marriage out of fear, securing gifts while his wife is taken into Pharaoh's house. The LORD intervenes for Sarai, exposing the deceit and preserving the family through whom His blessing will come. Paul explains that worldwide blessing reaches people through faith in Christ, who bears the curse His people deserve (Galatians 3 verses 13 and 14).
How does Genesis 12 show us that God calls Abram and keeps His promise to bless the nations, even when Abram fails?
God calls Abram and promises blessing for all the families of earth.
God commands Abram to leave his country and household for a land He will show him. He promises descendants to a man whose wife has no child, and blessing that will reach beyond his own family. Abram enters Canaan and builds altars, trusting the One who speaks while others still hold the land.
God's servant fails when fear leads him to hide the truth.
Famine takes Abram to Egypt, where fear of being killed leads him to hide his marriage. Sarai is taken into Pharaoh's house, while Abram receives livestock and servants on her account. Abram protects himself and leaves Sarai unprotected, so his fear puts God's promise at risk.
God acts for Sarai and preserves the family of His promise.
The LORD afflicts Pharaoh's household with plagues because Sarai is Abram's wife, defending the marriage Abram concealed. Pharaoh rebukes Abram and sends him away with his wife and possessions. God's intervention preserves His promise, while the king's rebuke exposes the wrong His servant has done. That faithfulness carries the family toward Christ, who will bring blessing by bearing the curse for sinners.
Memorise
All the families of the earth will be blessed through you.
Genesis 12:3
Looking to Jesus in my life
Ask yourself in your heart, what lie have I told from fear that I need Jesus to forgive?
God promises Abram, “All the families of the earth will be blessed through you.” Yet the man He calls soon conceals his marriage, and Sarai is taken into Pharaoh's household. The LORD preserves the family because His promised blessing rests on His faithfulness.
We need that mercy because our fear and deceit make us guilty before Him. Paul explains that Christ bore the curse so Abraham's blessing would reach the nations through faith (Galatians 3 verses 13 and 14). Jesus died for His people, suffering the punishment their disobedience deserved. He rose from the dead, and His finished sacrifice supplies everything needed for their acceptance with God.
Please turn from the lies you use to protect yourself, and trust Jesus Christ. Whoever repents and believes in Him receives forgiveness and a place among the people blessed through Abram's promised offspring. If you trust Him, His faithfulness gives you reason to tell the truth and care for those your fear has harmed. The Savior who bore the curse is enough for sinners who come.
Parent's note
Tell your children that God's promise rested on His faithfulness, and He protected Sarai when Abram's fear brought danger. Jesus bore His people's curse and rose again, giving forgiveness to everyone who repents and believes. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home. Call each child to turn from sin and trust Jesus, and pray that God would give them a new heart.
Pray together
Now please close your time together in prayer. Thank God for the blessing He gives through Christ, and bring the heart question to Him. Every child can pray, so let each one ask for faith to tell the truth and trust His mercy if they want to.
Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us. For it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree,” that the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Christ Jesus; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.
Galatians 3:13-14
Lord God, thank You for keeping Your promise and sending the Savior who bore the curse for His people. Please lead each of us to repent of deceit and trust Jesus. Give us courage to speak truth and love those in our care. Help us pray for Your blessing to reach other families this week. Amen.
