Genesis 20: God protects His promise despite failure

Begin in prayer

Before we read about Abraham's deceit and God's protection of Sarah, let us ask for His mercy. Please ask Him to restrain our sin, uncover our excuses and lead us to His faithful Son.

Keep back your servant also from presumptuous sins. Let them not have dominion over me. Then I will be upright. I will be blameless and innocent of great transgression.

Psalm 19:13

Father, please help us understand how You restrain sin and keep Your promise. Show us Jesus, our faithful Mediator who brings sinners to You through His finished sacrifice. Make us more like Him, speaking truth and caring for those our words affect. Please bless our family and keep us from excusing our wrong. In Jesus' name, Amen.

See where we're going

Abraham lives as a foreigner in Gerar, where he calls Sarah his sister and King Abimelech takes her. God warns the king in a dream, explaining that He has prevented him from touching another man's wife. He commands Abimelech to restore Sarah, promising life through Abraham's prayer and warning of death if the king refuses. The king rebukes Abraham, whose answers reveal fear, a concealed marriage and a standing arrangement to mislead. Abimelech returns Sarah, gives gifts that publicly clear her, and offers Abraham a home in his land. Abraham prays, and God heals the household whose ability to bear children He had closed because of Sarah.

As you read Genesis 20, look for the answers:

Reflect together

Key truth

God restrains sin and protects His promise, showing mercy despite the failure of His servant.

Abraham again conceals his marriage to protect himself, placing Sarah in another king's house while God's promise of her son still stands. As a foreigner in Gerar he fears for his life, yet the text exposes the harm his half truth brings to others. God warns Abimelech before Abraham prays, and He has already prevented the king from touching Sarah. The king's honest intention in this matter does not remove the need to return another man's wife. God's warning holds death before the household if Abimelech refuses, and promises life through Abraham's prayer if he obeys. Abraham is called a prophet here, a servant appointed to pray for the endangered king. His excuses uncover an arrangement made at the start of his travels, a policy of concealing the marriage wherever they went. God protects Sarah and heals the household, keeping the promise whose fulfillment depends on His faithfulness, even when its bearer fails. This mercy leads us to Christ, the sinless Mediator whose sacrifice and prayer secure the salvation of those who trust Him.

How does Genesis 20 show us that God restrains sin and protects His promise, showing mercy despite the failure of His servant?

God stops a king from sinning and commands him to obey.

God tells Abimelech that taking a married woman places him under a sentence of death. He accepts that the king acted without knowing the truth, yet says He Himself prevented the further sin. The king must restore Sarah, or he and all who belong to him will die.

God exposes Abraham's fear and the harm of his deceit.

Abraham assumes Gerar has no fear of God, while the king's servants have already trembled at God's warning. Sarah is his half sister, yet that truth was used to hide the fact that she is his wife. His half truth puts Sarah in danger in another man's house. The king rightly rebukes him, and God's faithfulness gives failing believers reason to confess their sin and seek Christ.

God heals through His servant's prayer and keeps His promise.

Abimelech returns Sarah, gives gifts and offers Abraham a place to live. The silver publicly clears Sarah in the eyes of others, while God's healing restores the household's ability to bear children. Abraham prays for people endangered by his own deceit, and God answers despite His servant's failure.

Memorise

I also withheld you from sinning against me. Therefore I didn’t allow you to touch her.

Genesis 20:6

Looking to Jesus in my life

Ask yourself in your heart, what truth have I hidden to protect myself, and must now confess to Jesus?

God tells Abimelech, “I also withheld you from sinning against me.” Abraham's concealment has put Sarah in danger, yet the Lord protects her before Abraham offers a prayer. His promise stands because He is faithful.

Abraham then prays for the king, though he is himself a sinner who needs mercy. Please look to the sinless Savior who brings guilty people to God. Jesus willingly bore the punishment of His people on the cross, and God raised Him from death. His finished sacrifice is enough to remove the guilt of everyone who trusts Him. He lives to intercede for those who come to God through Him (Hebrews 7 verses 25 to 27).

Repent of the deceit and fear you have used to protect yourself, and come to Him. Everyone who trusts this risen Savior receives forgiveness, with His faithful care as their hope. If you believe, please tell the truth where you have misled someone and pray for the person you have harmed. Christ's perfect work will never fail those who come to God through Him.

Parent's note

Tell your children that God restrains sin and keeps His promise, even when Abraham fails. Jesus died for His people and rose, so call each child to repent and trust Him for forgiveness. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home. Pray that God would give each child a new heart that loves His truth.

Pray together

Please close by thanking God for His faithful mercy and bringing Him the hidden truth the heart question has exposed. Ask for courage to confess it. Invite each child to pray if they want to, thanking Him or asking for help.

For what if some were without faith? Will their lack of faith nullify the faithfulness of God? May it never be! Yes, let God be found true, but every man a liar. As it is written, “That you might be justified in your words, and might prevail when you come into judgment.”

Romans 3:3-4

Father, thank You for restraining sin and keeping Your promise through Your own faithfulness. Please forgive our fear and deceit, and bring us to trust Jesus Christ. Help us tell the truth, receive correction, and pray for people we have harmed. Keep our family dependent on Your mercy as we obey You this week. Amen.
