Genesis 22: God provides the offering

Begin in prayer

Before we read how God tests Abraham and provides the offering, let us ask for faith in His promise. Please ask Him to show us the Savior He gives, and teach us to trust Him with the gifts we love.

Oh fear Yahweh, you his saints, for there is no lack with those who fear him. The young lions do lack, and suffer hunger, but those who seek Yahweh shall not lack any good thing.

Psalm 34:9-10

Father, please help us understand Your test of Abraham and the offering You provide. Show us Jesus, who gave Himself in His people's place. Make us more like Him, trusting Your word and obeying from love. Bless our family with faith that receives Your mercy and entrusts our dearest gifts to You. In Jesus' name, Amen.

See where we're going

God tests Abraham by commanding him to offer Isaac, the beloved son through whom the promised line will continue. Abraham travels to the place God names, telling his servants that he and Isaac will worship and return. Isaac asks about the lamb, and Abraham answers that God will provide. At the altar the LORD stops Abraham, and a ram is offered in the boy's place. God swears to bless Abraham's offspring and the nations because he has obeyed His voice. After Abraham returns to Beersheba, news of Nahor's family introduces Rebekah, whose place in Isaac's story will follow.

As you read Genesis 22, look for the answers:

Reflect together

Key truth

God tests Abraham's faith and provides an offering in Isaac's place, reaffirming His blessing for the nations.

God tests Abraham with a command concerning the son through whom His promise runs. Isaac is called the only son because he is the chosen heir, without denying that Ishmael is also Abraham's son. Abraham obeys and says they will return, trusting that God can raise the dead, as Hebrews explains (Hebrews 11 verses 17 to 19). A burnt offering was given whole to God, and Isaac carries its wood while Abraham carries the fire and knife. The LORD stops Abraham before the boy is harmed, making his faith visible through the obedience it produces. A ram dies in Isaac's place, and the provision gives the mountain its name without making the animal able to remove human guilt. God swears by Himself to bless Abraham's offspring and the nations, honoring obedience that springs from faith already counted righteous. The family news about Nahor introduces Rebekah, preparing for the marriage through which the promised line will continue. God's provision reaches its saving fullness in His own Son, whom He gives for sinners, and the blessing comes through faith in Him.

How does Genesis 22 show us that God tests Abraham's faith and provides an offering in Isaac's place, reaffirming His blessing for the nations?

God tests Abraham's trust in His promise.

God commands Abraham to offer Isaac, the beloved son through whom He has promised descendants. Abraham goes to the place God names and tells the servants that both he and Isaac will return. Hebrews says he reasons that God can raise the dead, so he trusts the promise even here.

God stops Abraham and provides an offering in Isaac's place.

The LORD's angel calls from heaven and commands Abraham to do nothing to the boy. God has always known Abraham's heart, and the test now makes his fear of God visible in obedient action. Abraham sees a ram and offers it where Isaac would have died. The substitute preserves the son's life, while the saving provision sinners need comes through Christ's willing death in His people's place.

God confirms His blessing for Abraham's offspring and the nations.

The LORD swears by Himself to bless Abraham, multiply his offspring and give them victory over their enemies. He promises blessing for all nations through that offspring, because Abraham has obeyed His voice. Abraham's righteousness was counted through faith before this obedience, which shows the faith God has already given. News of Rebekah's family prepares for Isaac's marriage and the continuing line that leads to Christ. God's oath strengthens faith in His promise, and the blessing belongs to everyone who trusts His Son.

Memorise

Abraham said, “God will provide himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son.” So they both went together.

Genesis 22:8

Looking to Jesus in my life

Ask yourself in your heart, what gift have I loved more than God, and must entrust to Jesus?

Isaac asks where the lamb is, and Abraham answers, “God will provide himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son.” The LORD stops Abraham, and a ram is offered “instead of his son”. God provides the life that takes Isaac's place.

Our guilt requires the sacrifice God gives in His Son. Paul directs believers to the Father who gave His own Son for them (Romans 8 verse 32). Jesus willingly bore His people's punishment on the cross, paying for their sins in full. God raised Him bodily, and His finished sacrifice is enough for every sinner who comes to Him. The promise of blessing for the nations reaches its fulfillment through this risen Savior.

Please turn from trusting what you can offer God, and trust the Son He has provided. All who repent and believe in Christ receive forgiveness and a place among the heirs of His promise. If you belong to Him, obedience grows from His grace as you entrust your dearest gifts to His care. His provision gives guilty people hope that their own sacrifices could never supply.

Parent's note

Tell your children how God tests Abraham and provides the offering, explaining verses 9 to 12 carefully in your own words. Christ bore His people's punishment and rose, so call each child to repent and trust Him for forgiveness. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home. Pray that God would give them new hearts that trust the Son He provided.

Pray together

Please thank God for providing His Son and bring Him the gift named in the heart question. Ask for grace to trust His promise. Invite each child to pray if they want to, thanking Him for Jesus or asking for faith to obey.

He who didn’t spare his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how would he not also with him freely give us all things?

Romans 8:32

Lord God, thank You for providing the Savior whose sacrifice is enough. Please turn us from trying to pay for our guilt, and lead us to trust Jesus. Help us obey because of Your grace and entrust what we love to Your care. Let our family speak of the blessing You give through Him. Amen.
