Genesis 28: God promises His presence and care

Begin in prayer

Before we read about Jacob's dream and God's promise to keep him, let us ask for faith in the way God provides. Please ask Him to show us Jesus and teach us to receive His mercy with reverence and thanks.

Yahweh of Armies is with us. The God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah.

Psalm 46:7

Father, please help us understand Your promise and Your keeping presence. Show us Jesus, the only way guilty sinners can come to You. Make us more like Him, trusting Your Word and thanking You for care we cannot earn. Please bless our family with reverence and faith as we hear You speak in Scripture. In Jesus' name, Amen.

See where we're going

Isaac blesses Jacob knowingly and sends him to Rebekah's family to find a wife, while forbidding a Canaanite marriage. Esau sees his father's judgment and adds a wife from Ishmael's family to those he already has. Jacob leaves Beersheba for Haran and sleeps on the road, where he dreams of a stairway and angels between earth and heaven. The LORD gives him the promise of Abraham's family, together with His presence, keeping and a return to the land. Jacob wakes in awe, sets up his stone with oil and calls the place Bethel, God's house. He then makes a vow concerning God's care, his worship and a tenth of all God gives him.

As you read Genesis 28, look for the answers:

Reflect together

Key truth

God meets Jacob with His promise and presence, giving a way to Himself that sinners cannot make.

Isaac knowingly gives Jacob Abraham's blessing and commands him to seek a wife from Rebekah's family, joining the gift with a charge. Esau adds a wife from Ishmael's family, yet nearness to Abraham's household cannot give the faith through which sinners receive God's promise. On the road to Haran, Jacob sleeps with a stone under his head and sees a stairway joining earth and heaven. The LORD promises land, countless offspring, blessing for all families, His keeping presence and a return to the land. God speaks His promise before Jacob sets up a stone or makes a vow, giving mercy the traveler has not earned. Jesus later speaks of angels ascending and descending on the Son of Man, locating the way to heaven in Himself (John 1 verse 51). Jacob wakes in awe, recognising God's presence where he had not known it, and names the place Bethel, meaning God's house. He sets up the stone and pours oil on it, marking the place where the LORD has met him. His vow begins with “If God will be with me”, naming food, clothing, return and worship after God's free promise.

How does Genesis 28 show us that God meets Jacob with His promise and presence, giving a way to Himself that sinners cannot make?

God's blessing comes with a charge to obey His Word.

Isaac names Abraham's blessing over Jacob and directs him toward a marriage among Rebekah's relatives. The promise of land remains a gift to a man who still travels as a foreigner. Esau marries into Abraham's family, yet descent cannot give anyone a saving place with God.

God promises His presence and keeping before Jacob makes a vow.

Jacob stops because the sun has set, and God meets him with a dream of a way between earth and heaven. Angels serve there, while the LORD Himself speaks the promise of blessing and His presence. He will keep Jacob and bring him back, and His promise does not rest on a payment Jacob offers. Jesus applies the angels' ascent and descent to Himself, the Son through whom sinners come to the Father.

God's promise calls Jacob to reverent trust and thankful worship.

Jacob wakes afraid and names the place God's house, then marks the meeting with a stone and oil. His vow begins with a condition about God's keeping, food, clothing and a peaceful return to his father's house. He speaks of the LORD as his God, the stone as God's house and a tenth of everything God gives. The promise came first, so vows and gifts can add no price to the mercy God freely gives in Christ.

Memorise

For I will not leave you, until I have done that which I have spoken of to you.

Genesis 28:15

Looking to Jesus in my life

Ask yourself in your heart, what am I offering to earn the welcome God gives through Jesus alone?

The LORD tells Jacob, “For I will not leave you, until I have done that which I have spoken of to you.” A man leaving home after deceit receives a promise he has done nothing to earn. God opens a way between earth and heaven while Jacob sleeps.

Jesus speaks of angels ascending and descending on Himself, directing us to the Son as the way to the Father. He alone lived in perfect obedience and willingly bore the punishment of His people on the cross. God raised Him bodily, and His finished work is enough to bring guilty sinners into the Father's presence. Jesus says that every approach to the Father comes through Him (John 14 verse 6). We cannot make another way by our goodness, gifts or promises.

Please turn from trying to earn God's welcome, and come to Jesus Christ in repentance and faith. All who believe in Him receive forgiveness and the care of the Father who keeps His people. If you trust Him, bring Him the needs of your road and give thanks before making any promise of your own. The Savior who opens the way will never leave those who come to Him.

Parent's note

Tell your children how God meets Jacob with a promise before he offers a vow or gift. Christ bore His people's judgment and rose, so call each child to seek forgiveness through repentance and faith in Him. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home. Pray that God would give them new hearts that seek His Son as the only way to the Father.

Pray together

Please thank God for the way He opens through Christ and bring Him the effort to earn His welcome named in the heart question. Ask for faith to receive His mercy. Invite each child to pray if they want to, bringing a need or giving thanks.

For through him we both have our access in one Spirit to the Father.

Ephesians 2:18

Father, thank You for meeting sinners with mercy and opening the way through Jesus Christ. Please turn us from trying to buy Your welcome and lead us to trust His finished work. Give our family reverence before You, confidence to bring our needs, and thankful obedience that follows Your grace. Keep us looking to Your faithful Son. Amen.
