Genesis 3: God promises to defeat the serpent
Begin in prayer
Before hearing the first judgment on human sin and the first promise of the Savior, please lead your family in prayer. Ask God to expose the lies we believe, help us own our sin, and direct us to the promised Christ.
Against you, and you only, I have sinned, and done that which is evil in your sight; that you may be proved right when you speak, and justified when you judge.
Psalm 51:4
Father in heaven, please open our eyes as we read Your Word. Help us hear the weight of Your judgment and see the mercy of Your promise. Show us Jesus, the Savior who defeats the devil. Make us more like Him, and please bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.
See where we're going
The serpent makes God's generous command sound harsh, then denies the death God warned of. When the woman and her husband eat, the promised wisdom gives way to shame and hiding. God calls them to account, so hiding becomes blame as each points to someone else. His judgment reaches childbirth and marriage, the ground yields thorns and thistles, and Adam will return to dust. Yet in judging the serpent, God promises a descendant of the woman who will suffer and strike the serpent's head. God clothes them with animal skins and drives the man from Eden, guarding the way to the tree of life.
As you read Genesis 3, look for the answers:
- What does the serpent say about the death God warned of? (verses 4 and 5)
- What does God promise about the woman's offspring and the serpent? (verse 15)
- What does God make for Adam and his wife before sending them out? (verse 21)
Reflect together
Key truth
God judges sin and promises a Savior who will defeat the serpent.
The serpent begins by questioning the word of the God who filled the garden with food. He turns one forbidden tree into a question about every tree, making the generous Giver sound harsh. Then he denies the death God threatened, and the woman and her husband eat. Their opened eyes bring shame, and the trees that held their food become a hiding place. God calls them to account, and each admits eating while pointing to someone else. His judgment reaches childbirth, marriage and the ground, until the man himself will return to dust. Yet God also announces hostility between the serpent and the woman, with a descendant who will strike the serpent while suffering Himself. This is the first promise of Christ, whom Hebrews shows defeating the devil through His death (Hebrews 2 verse 14). God clothes the guilty pair, then drives the man out and guards the way to the tree of life.
How does Genesis 3 show us that God judges sin and promises a Savior who will defeat the serpent?
The serpent lies, and the man and woman disobey God.
The woman takes fruit from the forbidden tree and gives some to her husband with her. Both eat, then sew fig leaves into coverings and hide from God. Their choice brings guilt that leaves cannot remove. Paul traces human sin and death to Adam, and shows Christ answering his disobedience with obedience (Romans 5 verses 12 to 19).
God brings sin into the open and judges it.
God tells the woman, “In pain you will bear children.” He adds, “Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.” Sin turns the good partnership of Eden into a struggle, where a wife may seek control and a husband may rule harshly. Both still bear God's image with equal worth, and husbands must love as Christ loved the church (Ephesians 5 verse 25). God curses the ground because of Adam, who will toil among thorns until he returns to dust.
God promises that the serpent will be defeated through a suffering Savior.
God tells the serpent that the woman's offspring will bruise its head, while it will bruise His heel. The promised victory comes with suffering for the One who wins it. Revelation identifies the ancient serpent as Satan (Revelation 12 verse 9). Jesus shares our humanity and defeats the devil through death, as Hebrews explains (Hebrews 2 verse 14).
God clothes the guilty, while the way to life is guarded.
Adam names his wife Eve because she will be the mother of all the living. God makes coats of animal skins and clothes them, yet sends the man out of Eden. Cherubim and a turning flaming sword guard the way to the tree of life, so he cannot eat and live forever. Only Christ can bring sinners back to God. His redeemed people will have life without the curse (Revelation 22 verses 1 to 3).
Memorise
I will put hostility between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring. He will bruise your head, and you will bruise his heel.
Genesis 3:15
Looking to Jesus in my life
Ask yourself in your heart, what sin am I hiding instead of confessing to Jesus?
Among the trees, the guilty man hears God ask, “Where are you?” He is afraid, and his answer points to the wife God gave him. The woman points to the serpent. Yet before they leave Eden, God announces a promise to that enemy. “He will bruise your head, and you will bruise his heel.” A suffering Savior will win the victory.
That Savior is Jesus. Hebrews tells us that He became human to defeat the devil through death (Hebrews 2 verse 14). Our sin deserves judgment, and blaming another person leaves that guilt untouched. At the cross Jesus suffered in His people's place, taking their curse and the death their rebellion deserved. He rose from the dead, victorious over the enemy. His sacrifice settled their guilt once for all, and no further payment is needed.
Please stop hiding behind excuses. Turn from your sin and trust Jesus, the promised Savior. Whoever comes to Him in repentance and faith receives forgiveness. You do not have to defeat the serpent before you come. The Savior who suffered and conquered is the One you need.
Parent's note
Tell your children that the serpent's lie never made disobedience safe, and God kept His word about judgment. Jesus suffered the curse for His people and rose to defeat their enemy. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home. Call each child to turn from sin and trust Jesus, and pray that God would give them a new heart.
Pray together
Now please close your time together in prayer. Thank God that His promise of victory stands even where sin brings judgment, and bring the heart question to Him. Every child can pray, so invite each one to ask for mercy in a short prayer if they want to.
And the God of peace will quickly crush Satan under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
Romans 16:20
Lord God, thank You that You spoke a promise of victory when the first sinners stood guilty before You. Please uncover our excuses and bring us to repent and trust Jesus. Thank You for the Savior who suffered and conquered. Help us believe Your Word when temptation comes this week. Amen.
