Genesis 31: God keeps Jacob on the road

Begin in prayer

Before we read how God brings Jacob away from Laban, let us remember that He sees our hardship and our hidden wrong. Please ask Him to show us His faithful care and lead us to Christ for forgiveness.

Yahweh will also be a high tower for the oppressed; a high tower in times of trouble.

Psalm 9:9

Father, please help us understand Your care for Jacob and Your knowledge of every hidden thing. Show us Jesus, who suffered without sin and gave His life for sinners. Make us more like Him, trusting Your judgment and keeping our promises. Please bless our family with honest hearts and faith in Your Word. In Jesus' name, Amen.

See where we're going

God tells Jacob to return home and promises to be with him, and Rachel and Leah agree to leave their father. Jacob leaves secretly with his household and possessions, while Rachel steals Laban's idols without Jacob knowing. Laban pursues them, but God warns him in a dream, and Jacob declares that anyone found with the idols must die. Laban's search fails to find Rachel's hidden idols, and Jacob angrily recounts his service, crediting God with seeing his affliction and rebuking Laban. Laban proposes a covenant, and they set up a pillar and heap as witnesses against harming one another. Their agreement protects Laban's daughters, and after a sacrifice and meal Laban blesses his family, says farewell and returns home.

Key truth

God keeps His promise to bring Jacob home, seeing his affliction and restraining the power of those who oppose him.

The LORD commands Jacob to return to his own land and promises to be with him, renewing His word at Bethel. Jacob tells Rachel and Leah that God has seen Laban's treatment of him and has given him flocks despite repeated wage changes. They agree to leave, yet Jacob departs secretly and Rachel steals her father's household idols, which Jacob knows nothing about. When Laban pursues, God warns him against speaking to Jacob either good or bad, restraining the power he claims to have. Jacob declares that anyone found with the idols must die, unknowingly putting Rachel at risk, though Laban fails to find them. Jacob recounts twenty years of hard work and loss, giving God the credit for seeing his affliction and rebuking Laban. Their covenant makes God witness to promises protecting Laban's daughters and forbidding either man to cross the boundary to harm the other. Peace between these men comes through an oath, while peace with God comes through His Son's death for sinners (Romans 5 verse 10). The God who sees hidden wrong also keeps His promise, and Christ gives every believer a welcome no enemy can overturn.

How does Genesis 31 show us that God keeps His promise to bring Jacob home, seeing his affliction and restraining the power of those who oppose him?

God sends Jacob home with the promise of His presence.

Laban's sons accuse Jacob, and Laban's attitude changes, yet the LORD's command gives Jacob his reason to return. Jacob tells his wives that God has seen his treatment and given him flocks despite Laban's repeated changes to his wages. They agree to leave, though Jacob goes secretly and Rachel steals idols, showing that God's care does not make their wrongs good.

God restrains Laban, while hidden wrong still matters to Him.

God warns Laban against speaking to Jacob either good or bad, and Laban admits this warning limits his power to harm. Jacob declares that anyone found with the idols must die, unaware that Rachel has stolen them. Rachel hides them and Laban fails to find them, yet her success in concealing theft gives no approval to it.

God sees Jacob's hardship and gives him protection.

Jacob describes twenty years of work, bearing losses himself and enduring heat, frost and sleepless nights. He says that without God's help Laban would have sent him away empty, giving God the credit for his protection. Jesus entrusted Himself to the righteous Judge and bore His people's sins (1 Peter 2 verses 22 to 24). Those who trust Him may put their cause before the God who sees, even when another person denies their hardship.

God witnesses the promises people make when others cannot see.

The heap and pillar witness their agreement, forbidding either man to cross them in order to harm the other. Laban also requires Jacob to protect his daughters from affliction and to take no further wives beside them. God sees what happens when people are apart, so promises bind us even where no human witness is present.

Memorise

Yahweh said to Jacob, “Return to the land of your fathers, and to your relatives, and I will be with you.”

Genesis 31:3

Looking to Jesus in my life

Ask yourself in your heart, what am I hiding from others that I need to bring to Jesus?

Jacob tells Laban, “God has seen my affliction and the labor of my hands, and rebuked you last night.” His hard service is known to God. Yet the household he protects carries hidden idols, and the man who speaks boldly knows nothing of Rachel's theft. We need help from the God who sees all of it.

Jesus alone served without deceit, entrusting Himself to the righteous Judge while suffering wrong. He bore the punishment His people deserved on the cross (1 Peter 2 verses 22 to 24). God raised Him bodily, and His finished sacrifice is enough to bring every believer into lasting peace with God. Everyone who trusts Him can face God's judgment knowing that Jesus has paid for all their sin.

Please turn from the wrong you hide and trust Jesus Christ. He forgives everyone who comes to Him in repentance and faith. If you belong to Him, put the hardship others deny into your Father's hands and keep the promises you have made. The Lord who sees your hidden life will keep His word to you.

Parent's note

Tell your children that God sees hidden wrong and hardship, explaining Rachel's theft and Jacob's threat in your own words. Christ took His people's punishment and rose, so call each child to turn from sin and seek forgiveness through faith in Him. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home. Pray that God would give them new hearts that trust Christ and keep their word when no one watches.

Pray together

Please thank God for keeping His promises and seeing what others miss. Bring Him the hidden wrong named in the heart question, asking for forgiveness through Christ. Invite each child to pray if they want to, asking help with a hardship or a promise they must keep.

being confident of this very thing, that he who began a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.

Philippians 1:6

Faithful Father, thank You for seeing hardship and keeping Your word. Please forgive what we have tried to hide, and lead us to trust the finished work of Jesus. Give us honest hearts, patience under wrong and care for the promises we make. Help our family to rest in Your faithful keeping. Amen.
