Genesis 34: God condemns violence and deceit
Begin in prayer
Before we read this account of wrong and revenge, let us remember God's justice and ask for His mercy. Please ask Him to help us name evil honestly, care for those harmed and see the Savior who gave His life for sinners.
Oh let the wickedness of the wicked come to an end, but establish the righteous; their minds and hearts are searched by the righteous God.
Psalm 7:9
Holy Father, please help us understand Your hatred of violence and deceit and Your care for those who suffer. Show us Jesus, who bore sin without answering wrong with cruelty. Make us more like Him, honest and careful with others. Please bless our family with repentance, faith and love that protects those in need. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Shechem forces Dinah, then seeks marriage through Hamor, while Jacob waits for his sons and they return grieved and angry. Hamor offers intermarriage, land and trade, and Shechem promises whatever payment the family asks. The brothers deceitfully make circumcision the condition for agreement, and Hamor and Shechem persuade the men of their city with the prospect of profit. On the third day Simeon and Levi kill every male, including Hamor and Shechem, and take Dinah out of Shechem's house. Jacob's other sons plunder the city and fields, taking its wealth and carrying off the women and children as captives. Jacob fears retaliation that will destroy his household, and the brothers reply by asking whether their sister should be treated as a prostitute.
As you read Genesis 34, look for the answers:
- How does the account describe the brothers' answer? (verse 13)
- What do Hamor and Shechem promise the men of their city? (verse 23)
- What danger does Jacob fear after the violence? (verse 30)
Reflect together
Key truth
God condemns violence and deceit, and calls us to seek His justice and mercy through Christ.
Shechem forces Dinah and defiles her, then speaks tenderly and seeks marriage, yet his later affection cannot undo the wrong he has done. Hamor offers intermarriage, land and trade, while Shechem offers whatever payment the family asks, leaving his wrongdoing unnamed in their proposal. Jacob's sons deceitfully require every male to be circumcised before agreeing, saying they will take their sister and leave if the men refuse. They turn the sign God gave Abraham into a means of deceit, showing that an outward rite cannot give a faithful heart. Hamor and Shechem persuade the city by promising profit, and the men accept the condition without any stated faith in God's promise. On the third day Simeon and Levi kill every male, including Hamor and Shechem, and take Dinah from Shechem's house. The other sons plunder the city and fields, carrying off its wealth, wives and children as captives. Jacob fears destruction through retaliation, while the brothers defend their sister's honour without answering for the violence done to the city. Jacob later curses their cruel anger (Genesis 49 verse 7), and only Christ gives sinners forgiveness for violence and deceit.
How does Genesis 34 show us that God condemns violence and deceit, and calls us to seek His justice and mercy through Christ?
God's law names wrong honestly and protects the person harmed.
Shechem wrongs Dinah by forcing her, and the account calls his act something that ought not to be done. His later love, tender speech and wish to marry her give no excuse for that act. Dinah receives no blame for his wrongdoing, and neither rank nor payment can make it right. Christ receives repentant sinners through His own payment for guilt, while His people must care for those who have been harmed.
God's covenant sign must never become a cover for deceit.
The brothers require circumcision as the condition for intermarriage, threatening to take their sister and leave if the men refuse. Hamor and Shechem persuade the men with the prospect of gaining the family's property, and every male receives the sign. The brothers misuse God's covenant sign to hide their deceit, and the city's outward rite gives no evidence of faith. Christ makes His people through His saving work and gives them new hearts, so please seek His mercy beyond outward religion.
God's justice gives no permission for cruel revenge.
Simeon and Levi kill every male and remove Dinah, then Jacob's other sons plunder the city and take women and children captive. A real wrong against their sister gives no right to charge a whole city with one man's guilt. Jacob later condemns their cruel anger, and God commands His people to leave vengeance to Him (Romans 12 verse 19). Jesus suffered without deceit or revenge and bore His people's sins, showing the Savior whom guilty people need.
Memorise
The sons of Jacob answered Shechem and Hamor his father with deceit
Genesis 34:13
Looking to Jesus in my life
Ask yourself in your heart, what wrong have I excused that I need Jesus to forgive and change?
The narrator says that Jacob's sons answer “with deceit”. Simeon and Levi then kill the city's men, and the other brothers take its goods, women and children. Dinah has been wronged, and their revenge brings more wrong upon others. Her brothers' last question names the injury to her while leaving their own violence unanswered.
Jesus suffered wrong without deceit or revenge, entrusting Himself to the righteous Judge (1 Peter 2 verses 22 to 24). On the cross He bore the punishment His people deserved, including their sins of violence, greed and deception. God raised Him from death, and His finished work is enough to forgive every sinner who trusts Him. Justice is satisfied through His willing sacrifice, and His mercy never requires us to call wrongdoing small.
Please turn from your sin, including the wrong you have excused by pointing to someone else's, and trust Jesus Christ. Everyone who repents and believes in Him receives forgiveness. If you belong to Him, name wrong honestly, care for those harmed and seek the help that protects them. Leave revenge with God and ask Him for a heart that pursues justice without deceit or cruelty.
Parent's note
Tell your children that Shechem's assault and the brothers' revenge are wrong, explaining verses 1 to 4 and 25 to 29 carefully. Dinah is not blamed, and Christ bore His people's judgment and rose, so call each child to repent and trust Him. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home. Pray that God would give them new hearts that seek Christ, care for those harmed and reject deceit and revenge.
Pray together
Please bring God the wrong named in the heart question and ask for forgiveness through Jesus. Pray for those who have been harmed and for help to care for them wisely. Invite each child to pray if they want to, asking for honesty, protection or help with anger.
Don’t seek revenge yourselves, beloved, but give place to God’s wrath. For it is written, “Vengeance belongs to me; I will repay, says the Lord.”
Romans 12:19
Righteous Father, thank You for the mercy You give through the finished work of Jesus. Please forgive our deceit, cruelty and excuses for sin, and lead us to repent and trust Him. Help our family care for those harmed, seek wise protection and leave revenge with You. Give us hearts that love what is right. Amen.
