Genesis 39: God stays with Joseph
Begin in prayer
Before we read about Joseph's work, refusal of sin and imprisonment, let us seek the God who remains with His people. Please ask Him to show us Christ and give us mercy to face temptation and the wrong others do.
Behold, God is my helper. The Lord is the one who sustains my soul.
Psalm 54:4
Father, please help us understand Your faithful presence with Joseph in service and prison. Show us Jesus, who resisted sin and gave His life for sinners. Make us more like Him, faithful in our work and truthful when wrong is done. Please bless our family with hearts that seek Your mercy and help. In Jesus' name, Amen.
See where we're going
Potiphar buys Joseph, sees the LORD's blessing on his work and entrusts his household and possessions to him. The LORD blesses the Egyptian's house and field for Joseph's sake. Potiphar's wife repeatedly asks Joseph to sleep with her, and he refuses because it would betray trust, wrong the marriage and sin against God. When she catches his garment, he leaves it and runs outside, then she uses it to support a false charge before the servants and Potiphar. His master becomes angry and puts him in the prison for the king's prisoners. The LORD remains with Joseph, gives him favour with the keeper and makes his work succeed as the prisoners are placed under his care.
As you read Genesis 39, look for the answers:
- Who makes Joseph's work succeed? (verses 2 to 3)
- Against whom does Joseph say the wrong would be sin? (verse 9)
- Who is with Joseph after he is put in prison? (verse 21)
Reflect together
Key truth
God remains with Joseph in service and prison, giving grace to resist sin and serve faithfully through unjust suffering.
The LORD is with Joseph after he is sold in Egypt, and Potiphar sees the success God gives to his work. His master entrusts the household to him, and the LORD blesses the house and field for Joseph's sake, extending kindness beyond Jacob's family. That blessing does not prevent temptation, as Potiphar's wife repeatedly asks Joseph to sleep with her and he refuses. He names his master's trust, her marriage and the sin against God, then leaves his garment and runs when she seizes him. She uses the garment and his flight to build a false charge, telling the servants and her husband a story that reverses the truth. Potiphar hears her account, becomes angry and puts Joseph in the prison where the king's prisoners are held, without a recorded hearing for Joseph. The LORD remains with him there, showing kindness and giving him favour with the keeper, who entrusts the prisoners and their work to him. Joseph's obedience has not bought God's presence, and the prison has not removed it, for the same LORD keeps him in both places. Christ knows temptation without sin and gives His people mercy and help through their trials (Hebrews 4 verses 15 and 16).
How does Genesis 39 show us that God remains with Joseph in service and prison, giving grace to resist sin and serve faithfully through unjust suffering?
God is with Joseph and blesses the work entrusted to him.
Potiphar buys Joseph, yet the LORD is with His servant in the household he did not choose. God gives success to his work, and his master entrusts his possessions to him as the whole household receives blessing. This kindness comes before the temptation and refusal, so Joseph's obedience does not purchase God's presence.
God matters more than the wrong someone presses us to do.
Potiphar's wife asks Joseph to commit adultery, and he refuses because of his master's trust, her marriage and the sin against God. Her repeated demands meet repeated refusal, and he runs outside when she catches his garment. Faithfulness may cost something, as Joseph leaves the garment behind, yet the loss gives no reason to stay near the wrong. Jesus resisted every temptation without sin and gives those who trust Him mercy and help to obey.
God sees the truth when a false charge uses real things.
The garment is real and Joseph has fled, yet she places a false story around those facts. She tells the servants and her husband that he sought the wrong she herself demanded, leaving her own part concealed. False witness sins against the God who sees the empty room as well as the story told afterward. Christ suffered false accusation without sin and bore His people's guilt, so please bring Him any lie you have kept standing.
God remains with Joseph and shows kindness inside the prison.
Joseph is imprisoned after his master hears the charge, and the LORD is with him there as He was in the house. The keeper entrusts the prisoners' work to him because God gives him favour and makes his work succeed. This is God's care for Joseph in that place, without promising every believer comfort, success or immediate release. Christ promises to remain with His people, so those who trust Him may serve through hardship (Hebrews 13 verses 5 and 6).
Memorise
How then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?
Genesis 39:9
Looking to Jesus in my life
Ask yourself in your heart, what wrong am I excusing that I need Jesus to forgive and help me resist?
Joseph asks, “How then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?” He refuses and flees, yet the garment he leaves becomes part of a false charge. His master puts him in prison, and the LORD is with him there. Faithful obedience has led through suffering while God's kindness continues.
Jesus knows temptation and suffering, yet He never sinned, and those who come through Him find mercy and help (Hebrews 4 verses 15 and 16). Falsely accused, He willingly stood in His people's place and bore the judgment against their sins on the cross. He paid their debt in full, then rose bodily in victory over death. His finished work is enough to forgive every sinner who trusts Him and bring them into God's lasting care.
Please turn from the wrong you excuse and the false story you have let stand, and trust Jesus Christ. All who come to Him in repentance and faith receive forgiveness. If you belong to Him, seek His help to refuse sin and serve faithfully in the place before you. His presence holds through hardship, and you can bring Him both the temptation you face and the wrong others have done.
Parent's note
Tell your children that God stays with Joseph through temptation and unjust suffering, explaining verses 7 to 18 carefully. The sinless Savior bore judgment for His people and rose, so call each child to repent and trust Him for forgiveness. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home. Pray that God would give them new hearts that trust Christ, resist sin and speak truthfully about others.
Pray together
Please bring God the wrong named in the heart question and seek forgiveness and help through Christ. Thank Him for care that holds through suffering. Invite each child to pray if they want to, asking help with a temptation, a task or an untrue word.
knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ.
Colossians 3:24
Faithful Father, thank You for remaining with Joseph and for the mercy You give through Jesus. Please forgive our excuses for sin and our false words about others. Lead us to repent and trust Christ, and help our family resist temptation and serve faithfully. Keep us resting in Your care through the hardship we face. Amen.
