Genesis 40: God makes His word come true
Begin in prayer
Before we read about the officers' dreams and Joseph's waiting, let us come to the God whose word is certain. Please ask Him to help us hear both warning and comfort, and show us the faithful Savior who receives sinners.
God has spoken once; twice I have heard this, that power belongs to God.
Psalm 62:11
Father, please help us understand that interpretation and the future belong to You. Show us Jesus, who makes You known and receives those who seek His mercy. Make us more like Him, attentive to people in trouble and faithful while waiting. Please bless our family with hearts that hear Your whole Word and trust Your Son. In Jesus' name, Amen.
See where we're going
Pharaoh imprisons his chief cupbearer and baker, and the captain of the guard assigns Joseph to care for them. Both dream in the same night, and Joseph asks about their sadness before telling them that interpretations belong to God. The cupbearer dreams of a vine and Pharaoh's cup, and Joseph announces his restoration within three days. Joseph asks to be remembered and released, explaining that he was stolen from his land and has done nothing to deserve this imprisonment. The baker dreams of baskets and birds eating the food, and Joseph announces his execution within three days. At Pharaoh's birthday feast the cupbearer is restored and the baker hanged, just as Joseph has interpreted. The chief cupbearer forgets Joseph, who remains in prison.
As you read Genesis 40, look for the answers:
- To whom does Joseph say interpretations belong? (verse 8)
- What does Joseph ask the cupbearer to do? (verses 14 to 15)
- What happens on the third day? (verses 20 to 22)
Reflect together
Key truth
God makes His word come true through Joseph, while human favour fails and His servant waits for deliverance.
Pharaoh's offended officers enter the prison where Joseph serves, and their dreams bring the question of interpretation to the man already caring for them. Joseph notices their sadness and asks about it, showing attention to fellow prisoners while his own unjust confinement continues. He credits God with interpretation before hearing the dreams, giving Him the honour for knowledge no skill of Joseph's could produce. The cupbearer's vine and cup announce restoration within three days, after which he will again place Pharaoh's cup in his hand. Joseph asks him to remember his case and seek his release, explaining that he was stolen from his land and imprisoned without cause. The baker hopes for another favourable word, yet his baskets announce death within the same three days, with his body exposed to birds. At Pharaoh's birthday feast both outcomes happen as Joseph has interpreted, showing that the hard word is as certain as the welcome one. The restored cupbearer forgets Joseph, leaving him waiting without making God's word or care less faithful. God's Son now makes Him known, and Christ gives sinners a welcome that no human forgetfulness can remove (Hebrews 1 verses 1 and 2).
How does Genesis 40 show us that God makes His word come true through Joseph, while human favour fails and His servant waits for deliverance?
God brings the troubled officers to Joseph's care.
Pharaoh's chief cupbearer and baker are confined where Joseph is held, and the captain assigns him to serve them. After their dreams, Joseph sees their sadness and asks what is wrong, even while he remains a prisoner himself. God's purpose works through this meeting without excusing the offences that brought them there.
God gives the interpretation and makes both words come true.
Joseph credits God with interpretation, then promises the cupbearer's restoration and announces the baker's execution within three days. Pharaoh restores one officer and hangs the other on his birthday, just as Joseph has said. God's truth warns and comforts, so please hear what He says in full.
God remains faithful when the person Joseph asks forgets him.
Joseph asks the cupbearer to remember his unjust imprisonment and speak to Pharaoh, without the account condemning his request for help. The man is restored, then forgets Joseph, and no release comes in this chapter. Human help may fail, yet Christ receives sinners who turn to Him and gives His people a place He will never forget. He promises life to the man who asks to be remembered, giving hope in His mercy (Luke 23 verses 41 to 43).
Memorise
Don’t interpretations belong to God?
Genesis 40:8
Looking to Jesus in my life
Ask yourself in your heart, what word from God am I resisting that I need Christ to help me hear?
Joseph asks, “Don’t interpretations belong to God?” His words announce restoration for one officer and death for the other, and both come true. Yet the man restored to Pharaoh's service forgets the prisoner who asked to be remembered. Joseph remains waiting, with no date given for his own release.
Jesus is the faithful Savior who remembers those who come to Him. At the cross a guilty man asks Him to remember him, and Jesus promises him life in Paradise (Luke 23 verses 41 to 43). The sinless Son bears His people's judgment in their place, paying the debt that no prisoner or ruler could remove. He rose in victory over death, and His finished work is enough to forgive and receive every sinner who trusts Him. His promise rests on a sacrifice already completed.
Please turn from ignoring God's warnings and from forgetting the mercy you have received, and trust Jesus Christ. Everyone who comes to Him in repentance and faith receives forgiveness and life with Him. If you belong to Him, hear His whole Word and remember someone whose need you have let slip from view. You can serve while waiting, because the Savior who has received you remains faithful.
Parent's note
Tell your children that both interpretations come true, explaining the baker's death in verses 16 to 22 without graphic detail. Jesus remembers sinners who seek His mercy, so call each child to repent and trust the Savior who died and rose. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home. Pray that God would give them new hearts that hear His Word and trust Christ while waiting.
Pray together
Please bring God the resistance named in the heart question and ask for faith in His Son. Thank Him for the Savior who remembers those who come. Invite each child to pray if they want to, asking for help while waiting or naming someone they need to remember.
God is faithful, through whom you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord.
1 Corinthians 1:9
Faithful Father, thank You that Your word comes true and Jesus receives sinners who seek His mercy. Please forgive our resistance to Your warnings and our forgetfulness toward those in need. Lead our family to repent and trust Christ. Teach us to hear Your whole Word, care for others and wait with hope in Your faithful Son. Amen.
