Genesis 41: God provides food through Joseph
Begin in prayer
Before we read about Pharaoh's dreams and the food stored through Joseph's work, let us thank God for His gifts. Please ask Him to help us hear His warning, receive His wisdom and see the saving life He gives through Jesus.
You crown the year with your bounty. Your carts overflow with abundance.
Psalm 65:11
Father, please help us understand Your purpose and the provision You give through faithful work. Show us Jesus, who gives life that death cannot take away. Make us more like Him, thankful for Your gifts and generous toward people in need. Please bless our family with wisdom to use what You provide and faith to trust Your Son. In Jesus' name, Amen.
See where we're going
After two full years Pharaoh dreams of thin cattle and grain consuming the healthy ones, and his interpreters cannot explain them. The cupbearer remembers Joseph, who comes from prison and credits God before announcing seven years of plenty followed by seven of famine. Joseph recommends gathering a fifth of the produce and storing it under wise oversight so the land will survive. Pharaoh raises him over Egypt beneath his own throne, gives him honours, a new name and Asenath as his wife. Joseph is thirty, gathers abundant grain during the good years and has Manasseh and Ephraim, naming both for what God has done. The famine begins as announced, and Pharaoh sends hungry Egyptians to Joseph, who opens the stores and sells grain. People from all countries come to Egypt to buy because the famine is severe.
As you read Genesis 41, look for the answers:
- Who does Joseph credit for the answer? (verse 16)
- Why is the dream given twice? (verse 32)
- What does Joseph say God has done in the land of his affliction? (verse 52)
Reflect together
Key truth
God reveals and carries out His purpose, raising Joseph to provide food and preserve lives through the famine.
After two full years, Pharaoh's dreams trouble him and defeat his interpreters, bringing the cupbearer's memory of Joseph into the king's hearing. Joseph comes quickly from prison, yet credits God for the answer before hearing what Pharaoh has seen. The cows and grain announce one purpose, seven years of plenty followed by seven of famine, fixed by God and soon to begin. Joseph counsels appointing a wise overseer, gathering a fifth of the produce and storing grain during the good years so the land will survive. Pharaoh recognises wisdom God has given Joseph and raises him over Egypt, keeping the throne above him and giving honours and a wife. At thirty Joseph begins this service, then gathers abundant grain through the good years, storing each area's food in its cities. Joseph names Manasseh and Ephraim before the famine, crediting God with relief of hardship and fruitfulness in the land of his affliction. The famine begins as announced, and hungry Egyptians and people from other lands come to buy the grain God has provided through Joseph's work. God's rule includes both the warning and the means of provision, leading us to seek His saving gift of life through Christ.
How does Genesis 41 show us that God reveals and carries out His purpose, raising Joseph to provide food and preserve lives through the famine?
God reveals the future that the king's wise men cannot explain.
Pharaoh's dreams trouble him, and all his interpreters fail before the cupbearer remembers the young Hebrew prisoner. Joseph credits God with the answer, then explains the plenty and famine as one purpose fixed by Him. Wisdom for this need comes as God's gift, leaving no ground for Joseph or the court to boast.
God's sure purpose calls for wise and faithful work.
Joseph's warning leads to a plan for overseers and stored grain, gathering a fifth during the good years. What God has fixed gives Pharaoh and his servants work to do, preserving lives through ordinary care and preparation. The plan belongs to this famine and gives no rule that every government must take the same share.
God raises Joseph and gives fruitfulness after hardship.
Pharaoh gives Joseph authority beneath his throne, and the man who came from prison now travels through Egypt to oversee its stores. Stephen credits God with giving him favour and wisdom and making him ruler (Acts 7 verses 9 and 10). Joseph's sons' names honour God's relief and fruitfulness, while his words still call Egypt the land of his affliction.
God provides food through Joseph and draws hungry people to it.
The famine begins as announced, and Pharaoh sends the hungry to Joseph, who opens the stores and sells grain. People from other lands also come, showing the reach of God's provision through the servant He has raised. Joseph's food sustains mortal life through a famine, while Christ gives eternal life freely to sinners who believe. Jesus receives all who come to Him, giving the saving life their own stores cannot supply (John 6 verses 35 to 37).
Memorise
For God has made me fruitful in the land of my affliction.
Genesis 41:52
Looking to Jesus in my life
Ask yourself in your heart, what pride in my gifts do I need Jesus to forgive and change?
Joseph says, “God has made me fruitful in the land of my affliction.” The man brought from prison now oversees food that keeps people alive as famine reaches the lands around Egypt. God has revealed the danger and provided through the years of plenty, Joseph's wisdom and the work of storing grain.
We need more than food for mortal life, because sin leaves us guilty before God and unable to escape death. Jesus gives Himself as the bread of life, receiving everyone who comes to Him in faith (John 6 verses 35 to 37). At the cross He willingly bore His people's judgment in their place, paying their debt in full. God raised Him, and His finished work is enough to forgive sinners and give them life that lasts beyond the grave. His saving gift comes freely through grace.
Please turn from trusting your own stores, wisdom or position and trust Jesus Christ. Everyone who repents and believes in Him is forgiven and received by God. If you belong to Him, thank Him for the provision you have and use it with care for another person's need. The Savior who gives eternal life will keep His people through plenty and want.
Parent's note
Tell your children that God provides through Joseph's wisdom and work, keeping the famine within His rule as well as the plenty. Jesus gave His life for His people and rose, so call each child to repent and trust Him for lasting life. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home. Pray that God would give them new hearts that thank Him and seek the life Christ gives.
Pray together
Please bring God the false trust named in the heart question and ask for faith in Jesus Christ. Thank Him for a particular provision and ask how to use it for others. Invite each child to pray if they want to, giving thanks or naming someone who needs help.
My God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:19
Father, thank You for ruling the seasons and providing food through Joseph's work. Thank You for the saving life Jesus gives through His finished sacrifice. Please lead us to repent and trust Him, giving You the credit for all we receive. Help our family prepare wisely, share with those in need and rest in Your faithful care. Amen.
