Genesis 44: Judah offers to take his place

Begin in prayer

Before we read how God brings guilt before the brothers and Judah pleads for Benjamin, let us ask for honest hearts. Please seek God's mercy through Jesus and ask Him to teach us care for those our sin has hurt.

Consider my affliction and my travail. Forgive all my sins.

Psalm 25:18

Father, please open our eyes to understand this plea for a brother and a grieving father. Show us Jesus, who gave Himself to rescue His people. Make us more like Him, ready to confess sin and bear another person's burden. Please bless our family with hearts that seek forgiveness through Christ and learn to love at a cost. In Jesus' name, Amen.

See where we're going

Joseph has his silver cup placed in Benjamin's sack, then sends his steward to accuse the brothers after they leave. They deny theft and offer death for its holder and slavery for themselves, but the steward limits slavery to the one found with it. The cup is found with Benjamin, and all return in grief to Joseph, where Judah admits their iniquity before God. Joseph offers the others freedom while holding Benjamin, and Judah pleads for their father, who still believes Joseph dead. Recalling his pledge to bring Benjamin back, Judah offers himself as slave in his brother's place so Benjamin can return home. The chapter closes with his fear of the harm their father would suffer if the boy were missing.

As you read Genesis 44, look for the answers:

Reflect together

Key truth

God brings the brothers' guilt before them, and Judah offers to take Benjamin's place.

After the feast Joseph orders grain and money into the sacks, with his silver cup placed in Benjamin's sack. The steward overtakes the brothers and charges them with repaying good with evil, claiming Joseph uses the cup for divination. Their returned money supports their denial of theft, yet they rashly offer death for whoever has the cup and slavery for themselves. The steward reduces the penalty to slavery for the one found with it, then searches from oldest to youngest and finds it with Benjamin. All return in grief, and Judah says God has found their iniquity, though the reader knows Joseph had the cup planted. Joseph offers the others freedom while holding Benjamin, and Judah pleads by recalling their father's love, grief and dependence on his youngest son. He names his pledge to bring Benjamin home, offering himself as slave in the boy's place rather than returning without him. The man who proposed selling Joseph now offers to stay for his brother, showing costly concern for Benjamin and their father. Christ, who descended from Judah, gives His life as a ransom for sinners who trust Him (Mark 10 verse 45).

How does Genesis 44 show us that God brings the brothers' guilt before them, and Judah offers to take Benjamin's place?

God knows the guilt that a good defence cannot remove.

The brothers deny stealing and point to the money they returned, yet Joseph's cup has been placed in Benjamin's sack. They offer death for its holder and slavery for themselves, while the steward limits slavery to the one holding it. Their innocence about the cup cannot answer for the brother they sold, and Judah says God has found their iniquity.

God brings Judah to plead for his brother and father.

Joseph offers freedom to everyone except Benjamin, giving the brothers a way home that leaves one brother behind. Judah draws near and recalls the father's love that once stirred hatred when it rested on Joseph. He pleads that losing Benjamin will bring their father to the grave in sorrow.

God shows costly concern as Judah offers to stay.

Judah had promised to bring Benjamin back, bearing lifelong blame before his father if he failed. Now he asks to become a slave in Benjamin's place so the boy can go home with his brothers. His request remains unanswered when this chapter ends, leaving us waiting for Joseph's response.

Memorise

Now therefore, please let your servant stay instead of the boy, my lord’s slave; and let the boy go up with his brothers.

Genesis 44:33

Looking to Jesus in my life

Ask yourself in your heart, what hidden sin or selfishness do I need Jesus to forgive and change?

Judah says, “God has found out the iniquity of your servants.” The cup was planted, yet the brothers have real guilt before God. Judah asks to stay in Benjamin's place because he cannot bear the harm another loss would bring their father. The chapter ends with his plea still before Joseph.

Jesus descended from Judah and gave His life as a ransom for many (Hebrews 7 verse 14, Mark 10 verse 45). His sacrifice carried out the rescue sinners need. Sinless Himself, He accepted the punishment His people deserved, paying their debt to God at the cross. He rose from the dead, and His finished work is enough to release every sinner who comes to Him. Forgiveness rests on His righteousness and sacrifice.

Please turn from using an honest defence to hide another sin, and from leaving others to bear its cost. Trust Jesus Christ, and God will forgive you and receive you through Him. If you belong to Him, name the harm you have caused and seek to put it right. His grace gives you reason to bear another person's burden with love.

Parent's note

Tell your children that the cup was planted, while the brothers had real guilt and Judah offered himself for Benjamin. Explain the rash death pledge carefully, and call each child to repent and trust Jesus, who bore His people's judgment and rose. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home. Pray that God would give them new hearts that confess sin and care for others.

Pray together

Please bring God the sin named in the heart question and ask for forgiveness through Jesus. Thank Him for the Savior who gave Himself for sinners, and ask for grace to bear another person's burden. Invite each child to pray if they want to, seeking mercy or naming someone who needs care.

Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.

Galatians 6:2

Father, thank You for Jesus, who gave Himself to save His people and rose to give them life. Please forgive our hidden wrongs and the times we have left others to bear their cost. Give us repentance and faith in Christ. Teach our family to confess honestly, seek peace and help those carrying a burden. Amen.
