Genesis 7: God judges and keeps His promise

Begin in prayer

Before we read how God carried out His warning and preserved Noah's household, let us listen humbly to Him. Ask Him to make us attentive to His Word and to lead us to the rescue found in Christ.

For this, let everyone who is godly pray to you in a time when you may be found. Surely when the great waters overflow, they shall not reach to him.

Psalm 32:6

Father in heaven, please open our eyes to understand Your judgment and Your mercy. Show us Jesus, who bore punishment for His people and keeps everyone who trusts Him. Make us more like Him as we heed Your Word. Please bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.

See where we're going

The LORD calls Noah and his household into the ship, with creatures whose offspring will live on the earth. Noah does all God commands, and after seven days the flood begins. The deep breaks open and rain falls for forty days and nights, while God shuts Noah inside with the gathered creatures. As the waters increase, they lift the ship and cover the high mountains under the whole sky. Every person and land creature outside dies, while Noah and those with him remain alive in the ship. The waters prevail over the earth for a hundred and fifty days.

As you read Genesis 7, look for the answers:

Reflect together

Key truth

God carries out His judgment and keeps alive those He has promised to preserve.

The flood brings God's announced judgment upon the violent world, while the household He promised to preserve remains alive. Noah's obedience follows the favor God showed him, so rescue rests on grace before any command is fulfilled. The animals come to Noah as God commanded, showing that the Creator governs the living things He made. Clean animals are taken in greater numbers, providing for the offerings Noah will make when the flood ends. Then the LORD shuts Noah in, placing his safety in the hands of the One who sent the waters. The same rising water covers the mountains and lifts the ship, carrying its living cargo above the destruction. Forty days measures the rain, while the hundred and fifty days measures the waters prevailing over the earth. God's warning and His promise both prove true, pointing sinners to Christ for rescue from the judgment their sins deserve.

How does Genesis 7 show us that God carries out His judgment and keeps alive those He has promised to preserve?

God calls Noah to enter, and Noah obeys His word.

The LORD sees Noah's righteousness and calls him and his household into the ship. His favor has already been given, and Noah's obedience now shows his trust in God's word. The additional clean animals preserve life and provide for worship after the flood.

God brings the creatures in and shuts Noah inside.

Noah is six hundred when the flood comes, and the account gives the day the waters break out. Water comes from the deep as rain falls from the sky, undoing the world's dry and habitable order. The creatures enter in pairs, and the LORD Himself shuts Noah in. Noah's household rests secure in God's keeping, the faithful care that Christ gives everyone who trusts Him.

God judges the earth and preserves life within the ship.

The rising waters cover the mountains and destroy every person outside the ship, together with the creatures on dry land. The water that overwhelms the world lifts the vessel, where Noah and those with him remain alive. Jesus warns that His return will also overtake unprepared people, as this judgment did (Matthew 24 verses 37 to 39). God's patience gives time to heed His word, so His warning calls us to seek the rescue He provides.

Memorise

Only Noah was left, and those who were with him in the ship.

Genesis 7:23

Looking to Jesus in my life

Ask yourself in your heart, what sin am I delaying bringing to Jesus for mercy?

After the creatures enter as God commanded, we read, “then Yahweh shut him in.” The waters cover the mountains, yet the ship carries those God has promised to preserve. His judgment is real, and so is His ability to rescue.

Jesus warns that people will be unprepared for His return as they were when the flood came (Matthew 24 verses 37 to 39). We deserve judgment because our sin is against the God who gives us life. At the cross, Christ bore the punishment His people deserved. He died and rose again, and His finished sacrifice is enough to save every sinner who trusts Him.

Please heed His warning today. Turn from the sin you have treated as safe, and put your trust in Jesus Christ. Everyone who comes to Him receives forgiveness and eternal life. Those who belong to Him can rest their safety in His keeping, while learning to obey the word He has spoken.

Parent's note

Tell your children that God carried out His warning and kept the people He had promised to preserve. Jesus bore His people's punishment and rose again, giving forgiveness to everyone who turns from sin and trusts Him. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home. Call each child to turn from sin and trust Jesus, and pray that God would give them a new heart.

Pray together

Now please close your time together in prayer. Thank God that His warning and His promise both stand, and bring the heart question to Him. Every child can pray, so invite each one to ask for help in listening and trusting if they want to.

Colossians 1:14

Lord God, You judge sin and keep every promise You make. Please forgive our careless response to Your warnings and lead each of us to repent and trust Jesus. Thank You for the salvation He completed. Help us obey Your Word this week and rest in His faithful keeping. Amen.
