Isaiah

Isaiah 14: God’s purpose stands over every nation

Begin in prayer

Before the proud king’s boasting falls silent, please pray together. Ask God to humble our family beneath His purpose and show us the mercy and refuge found in the Lord Jesus.

though the wicked spring up as the grass, and all the evildoers flourish, they will be destroyed forever.

Psalm 92:7

Father in heaven, please open our eyes as we read Your Word. Help us see that no ruler can overturn Your purpose. Show us the humble Savior and make us willing to depend on Him. Make us more like Jesus. And please bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.

See where we're going

The LORD will show compassion to Jacob, bring His people home and join foreigners to them. Former captives will rule their oppressors, and their hard service will give way to rest. They sing against Babylon’s king, whose cruelty ends in weakness among the dead. He aimed to make himself like the Most High, yet he is cast down and denied an honored burial. God will cut off Babylon’s descendants and break Assyria’s yoke, because no one can turn back His hand. Philistia must not celebrate a broken rod, for worse danger comes while the afflicted find refuge in Zion.

As you read Isaiah 14, look for the answers:

Reflect together

Key truth

God’s purpose cannot be stopped as He humbles rulers and gives His people refuge.

Isaiah gives God’s people a taunt song to sing over the king of Babylon once the LORD has brought him down (verse 4). It opens with rest, because the LORD has broken the staff of the wicked and the whole earth is quiet. Even the cypress trees and the cedars of Lebanon rejoice, because no lumberjack comes now to cut them down. In Sheol, the place of the dead, the kings he conquered ask if he has become as weak as they are. His fall began in his heart, where he planned to climb above the stars and make himself like the Most High. The morning star who wanted the highest place is brought down to the depths of the pit (verse 15). Then the LORD of Armies swears that His plan will stand, and no one can turn back His stretched out hand. That is why the afflicted of His people take refuge in Zion, the city the LORD has founded (verse 32).

How does Isaiah 14 show us that God’s purpose cannot be stopped as He humbles rulers and gives His people refuge?

God shows compassion to oppressed people.

The captives receive a home and rest from their hard service. Foreigners join them, and the rule of their oppressors is reversed. Their safety rests upon the LORD who has chosen to show mercy.

God brings the highest human pride down.

The king’s plans reach above the stars, yet he joins the dead in weakness. His shameful end answers the cruelty that destroyed his own land and people. God cuts off the family that might continue his rule.

God’s purpose stands when rulers change.

God swears to break the Assyrian burden from His people’s shoulders. Philistia’s broken rod brings no safety, for God announces famine and the death of its remnant. The final answer points to Zion, founded by the LORD as refuge for His afflicted people.

Memorise

This is the plan that is determined for the whole earth. This is the hand that is stretched out over all the nations.

Isaiah 14:26

Looking to Jesus in my life

Ask yourself in your heart, what pride do I need to confess as I seek refuge in the Lord Jesus?

The king says, “I will make myself like the Most High!” His boasting ends in the pit. God’s people receive rest because the Lord breaks the power that crushed them.

Pride also makes us rivals to the God who deserves our obedience. Jesus humbled Himself and died for His people, bearing the penalty of their rebellion on the cross. God raised Him from the grave as the living Redeemer. Jesus has fully satisfied the justice of the Most High, and He brings His people into peace with God.

Turn from self exaltation and believe in Jesus. Bring Him the pride that has no defense before God. Forgiveness and rest belong to all who seek refuge in Him by faith. The Lord whose purpose no king can stop has provided a refuge for sinners in His Son.

Parent's note

Tell your children that the song addresses Babylon’s king and exposes his pride. Explain the morning star as the song’s picture of the king of Babylon, as verse 4 names him. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home. Call each child to turn from sin and trust Jesus, and pray that God would give them a new heart.

Pray together

Now please close your time together in prayer. Thank God that His purpose stands and His afflicted people find refuge, and bring the heart question to Him. Every child can pray, so let each one say a short prayer if they want to.

Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

Matthew 5:4

Lord of every nation, thank You that Your purpose cannot be overturned. Please humble our pride and lead us to repentance and faith in Christ. Comfort those who suffer under cruel rulers. Help our family seek refuge in You and serve without boasting in the days ahead. Amen.
