Isaiah

Isaiah 18: God watches and acts over nations

Begin in prayer

Before we see messengers sent across the waters, let us be still before the Lord. Ask Him to show our family His rule over nations and the hope of worshiping Him through Christ.

Above the voices of many waters, the mighty breakers of the sea, Yahweh on high is mighty.

Psalm 93:4

Father in heaven, please open our eyes as we read Your Word. Help us trust Your watchful rule when nations are busy with their plans. Show us Jesus and make us ready to honor You. Make us more like Jesus. And please bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.

See where we're going

Isaiah addresses a land beyond Ethiopia’s rivers, where ambassadors travel across the waters in papyrus vessels. Swift messengers are sent to a tall and smooth people whose land is divided by rivers. All the earth is called to watch the lifted banner and hear the trumpet. The LORD remains still in His dwelling, watching like heat in sunshine and dew in harvest. Before the grapes mature, He cuts away the branches and leaves them for birds and animals. A gift will then be brought from that distant people to the LORD of Armies at Mount Zion.

As you read Isaiah 18, look for the answers:

Reflect together

Key truth

God watches the nations, cuts down their strength and receives worship from distant peoples.

Isaiah speaks to a land by the rivers of Ethiopia, whose people were tall and awesome to the nations (verses 1 and 2). Its ambassadors sailed in light boats made of papyrus, a reed that grew by the Nile, to make treaties with other kingdoms. Isaiah tells the whole world to stop, look for God’s banner and listen for His trumpet (verse 3). While the nations hurry, the LORD says He will be still and watch from His dwelling place. His stillness is like summer heat and dew at harvest, quiet things that ripen a crop without a sound. Then, just before the grapes are ripe, He cuts away the spreading branches, and the strength the nations trusted is gone (verse 5). The same distant people then bring a present to the LORD of Armies at Mount Zion (verse 7). God does not need the treaties of nations, because He rules them, and even faraway peoples will bring Him honor.

How does Isaiah 18 show us that God watches the nations, cuts down their strength and receives worship from distant peoples?

God’s rule reaches beyond familiar borders.

The ambassadors cross waters in light boats made from papyrus reeds while messages call a distant people. All earth’s inhabitants are summoned to watch the banner and hear the trumpet. Their attention must reach beyond human plans to the Lord’s action.

God chooses the time to bring strength down.

The growing vine appears close to a fruitful harvest. The LORD cuts its spreading branches before the crop matures. Those cut down are left for birds and animals, showing how complete God’s judgment will be.

God receives honor from distant peoples.

The final gift comes from the same remarkable people described at the beginning. It is brought to the LORD of Armies at Mount Zion. Their distance and strength do not keep them outside His authority or beyond the call to honor Him.

Memorise

I will be still, and I will see in my dwelling place, like clear heat in sunshine, like a cloud of dew in the heat of harvest.

Isaiah 18:4

Looking to Jesus in my life

Ask yourself in your heart, what impatient plan am I trusting more than the watchful Lord Jesus?

From His dwelling the LORD declares, “I will be still, and I will see in my dwelling place.” The urgent messengers cannot hurry Him. He cuts down the ripening strength and receives a gift where His name is honored.

We also stand beneath His watchful judgment because of our sin. Jesus paid the ransom of His people with His life, and the Father raised Him from the dead. His work was finished once for all, and it brings all who trust Him into God’s presence as accepted worshipers.

Turn from the plans that leave God out and place your confidence in Jesus. This Savior brings guilty people into God’s presence with forgiveness through faith in Him. Come to Him with the heart you cannot make clean by your own tribute. Through His finished sacrifice, God gathers people from every land to honor Him.

Parent's note

Tell your children that God’s stillness is watchful rule while human messengers hurry. Keep the distant people as the chapter describes them, without guessing their political plans. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home. Call each child to turn from sin and trust Jesus, and pray that God would give them a new heart.

Pray together

Now please close your time together in prayer. Thank God that His watchful rule ends in honor brought to His name, and bring the heart question to Him. Every child can pray, so let each one say a short prayer if they want to.

Ask of me, and I will give the nations for your inheritance, the uttermost parts of the earth for your possession.

Psalm 2:8

Lord of all lands, thank You that urgent human plans never escape Your sight. Please turn us to Jesus in repentance and trust. Teach us to wait for Your wise action. Let our family honor Your name through the words and choices of this week. Amen.
