Isaiah 21: God announces Babylon’s fall
Begin in prayer
Before we hear the watchman’s report, let us ask God for ears that receive His Word. Ask God to help our family trust what He says and find mercy in Jesus when earthly strength fails.
The idols of the nations are silver and gold, the work of men’s hands.
Psalm 135:15
Father in heaven, please open our eyes as we read Your Word. Help us listen to Your Word with the watchman’s care. Show us Christ and teach us to trust Your promise above the strength of nations. Make us more like Jesus. And please bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.
See where we're going
A grievous vision calls Elam and Media against the destroyer and leaves Isaiah trembling in anguish. People prepare a feast, then the princes are called to make their shields ready. God commands a watchman to report what he sees, and Babylon’s fall and its broken idols are announced. Isaiah declares to his afflicted people what he has heard from the God of Israel. A voice from Seir asks about the night, and the watchman answers that morning comes and also night. Fugitives in Arabia need bread and water as they flee battle, and within one year all Kedar’s glory will fail and few archers remain.
As you read Isaiah 21, look for the answers:
- What report does the watchman bring about Babylon and its gods? (verses 6 to 9)
- What does the watchman answer about morning and night? (verses 11 and 12)
- What will happen to Kedar’s glory within one year? (verses 16 and 17)
Reflect together
Key truth
God announces Babylon’s fall and the failure of the nations’ proud strength.
Chapter 21 holds three messages from the LORD, about Babylon, about Dumah and about Arabia, and in each one proud strength fails. Isaiah sees Elam and Media sent against Babylon, and the vision fills him with pain like a woman in labor (verses 2 and 3). In the city the princes eat and drink, when they should be oiling their shields for battle (verse 5). A watchman stands at his post day and night, until riders come with the news, “Fallen, fallen is Babylon” (verse 9). Its carved gods lie broken on the ground, because idols cannot save the city that made them. From Seir someone calls again and again to ask what is left of the night (verse 11). The watchman answers that morning comes, and also the night, and he tells them to come back and ask again. Within one year the glory of Kedar fails too, for the LORD, the God of Israel, has spoken it (verse 17).
How does Isaiah 21 show us that God announces Babylon’s fall and the failure of the nations’ proud strength?
God’s word declares the end of false strength.
The watchman stays at his post by day and night until the report comes. Babylon has fallen, and its carved gods lie broken. Isaiah passes on what he has heard from the LORD, rather than inventing a safer message.
God’s warning must be heard with care.
The caller from Seir repeats the question about the night. The watchman’s answer names both morning and night and invites another inquiry. A glimpse of relief must not become a promise that every danger has passed.
God sets a limit to nations’ glory.
Caravans lodge away from their usual shelter as people flee the drawn sword. Bread and water meet their immediate need. Within a measured year, Kedar’s famous archers will be reduced to a few.
Memorise
Fallen, fallen is Babylon; and all the engraved images of her gods are broken to the ground.
Isaiah 21:9
Looking to Jesus in my life
Ask yourself in your heart, what warning am I ignoring when I need to hear Jesus and trust Him?
The report declares, “Fallen, fallen is Babylon.” The carved images lie broken with it. Isaiah tells afflicted people what he has heard from the living God whose word remains when kingdoms fail.
That word also exposes the sin for which we must answer. Jesus carried the sin of His people to the cross and died under the judgment they deserved. Raised from death, Jesus has secured His people’s salvation. No earthly power or religious offering can add to the rescue He has fully accomplished.
Turn from the false hope God’s word exposes and trust Jesus Christ. All who rest their hope in Him are forgiven according to His faithful promise. Hear His warning with the care of a watchman waiting for the truth. The risen Savior remains a sure refuge when proud strength collapses.
Parent's note
Tell your children that Isaiah reports God’s word with anguish and patience. Explain the watchman’s mixed answer without inventing a promise of unbroken prosperity. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home. Call each child to turn from sin and trust Jesus, and pray that God would give them a new heart.
Pray together
Now please close your time together in prayer. Thank God that His word stands when nations and their idols fall, and bring the heart question to Him. Every child can pray, so let each one say a short prayer if they want to.
But when these things begin to happen, look up, and lift up your heads, because your redemption is near.”
Luke 21:28
Faithful Lord, thank You that Your word outlasts every kingdom. Please give us ears to hear and hearts that turn from sin to Jesus. Make us patient listeners when Your warnings unsettle us. Help our family trust Your truth and care for displaced people this week. Amen.
