Isaiah

Isaiah 24: God judges the earth and reigns

Begin in prayer

Before we hear the earth’s joy fall silent, let us bow before its King. Ask God to show our family the weight of rebellion and the mercy of the Savior who bore judgment for sinners.

The mountains melt like wax at the presence of Yahweh, at the presence of the Lord of the whole earth.

Psalm 97:5

Father in heaven, please open our eyes as we read Your Word. Help us hear Your judgment with sober hearts. Show us Christ and lead us to the kingdom that stands when earthly strength is shaken. Make us more like Jesus. And please bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.

See where we're going

The LORD empties the earth and scatters its inhabitants, with no rank or occupation exempt from His judgment. They have broken His laws and everlasting covenant, so the curse consumes them and only a few remain. Wine and music lose their joy, and the city is left broken and desolate. Survivors lift songs to the LORD’s majesty from distant lands, yet Isaiah grieves over continuing treachery. Fear, pit and snare leave no escape as the earth staggers beneath its disobedience and falls without rising. God will imprison the powers on high and earthly kings, then visit them after many days. His reign in Zion will shine with glory that puts the sun and moon to shame.

As you read Isaiah 24, look for the answers:

Reflect together

Key truth

God judges the rebellious earth and reigns in glory before His people.

The message now reaches beyond one named kingdom to the inhabited earth. Priest and people, master and servant, buyer and seller stand together under the same sentence. The reason is human rebellion against God’s enduring covenant and commands. Chapters 13 to 23 judged one nation after another, so chapter 24 gathers them all under the same judgment of the LORD. A remnant remains like the few olives or grapes left after gathering, and their songs honor the LORD’s majesty. Yet the prophet still hears treachery and cries out in anguish. The pit and snare pictures show that running from one danger cannot escape God’s judgment. Even the highest powers are confined while the LORD reigns before His elders in glory.

How does Isaiah 24 show us that God judges the rebellious earth and reigns in glory before His people?

God holds every station of life accountable.

The priest shares the people’s judgment, and the master cannot shelter behind the servant. God names broken laws and a violated covenant as the cause. Human rank cannot remove human guilt before Him.

God’s majesty receives praise amid devastation.

The city’s music and wine no longer give joy. Yet voices rise from the sea and distant lands to honor the LORD. Their praise stands beside the prophet’s grief over continuing treachery.

God’s reign outshines the powers He judges.

Fear, pit and snare show danger on every path of escape. God gathers the high powers and earthly kings into prison for His appointed visitation. His glory before His elders leaves sun and moon ashamed.

Memorise

Yahweh of Armies will reign on Mount Zion, and in Jerusalem; and before his elders will be glory.

Isaiah 24:23

Looking to Jesus in my life

Ask yourself in your heart, who can shelter me from God’s judgment, if not Jesus?

Isaiah names the earth’s guilt, “they have transgressed the laws, violated the statutes, and broken the everlasting covenant.” No rank of society escapes. Yet songs rise to the majesty of the LORD who reigns above the judged kings.

We share the guilt of breaking God’s commands. Jesus bore the punishment for His people and died under its weight on the cross. God raised Him from the grave after He accomplished His people’s salvation. Their debt is paid in full, so believers stand sheltered from God’s condemnation through Him.

Turn from your rebellion and trust this risen Lord. Forgiveness is His gift to those who bow before Him in faith. Come beneath His mercy while the things that promise safety still seem strong. The King’s glory will endure when every earthly refuge is shaken.

Parent's note

Tell your children that God judges kings and servants alike, and that Jesus is a refuge for all who flee to Him. Please explain the punishment of the powers on high and kings of the earth in verse 21, with no end times timetable. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home. Call each child to turn from sin and trust Jesus, and pray that God would give them a new heart.

Pray together

Now please close your time together in prayer. Thank God that He reigns gloriously above the earth and its rulers, and bring the heart question to Him. Every child can pray, so let each one say a short prayer if they want to.

and then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky. Then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky with power and great glory.

Matthew 24:30

King of all the earth, thank You that Your glory stands when earthly powers fall. Please lead us to repent and trust Jesus, whose sacrifice rescues sinners from judgment. Teach us to value Your kingdom. Give our family reverence and hope as we live before You this week. Amen.
