Isaiah

Isaiah 25: God swallows up death forever

Begin in prayer

Before we open Isaiah 25 and its promise of death swallowed up, let us thank God for His faithfulness. Ask Him to show our family the risen Savior and teach us to wait for the salvation He has promised.

Those who sow in tears will reap in joy.

Psalm 126:5

Father in heaven, please open our eyes as we read Your Word. Help us understand the victory of Jesus over death. Give us hearts that trust Him and hope in Your promise to wipe away tears. Make us more like Jesus. And please bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.

See where we're going

Praise rises to the God whose faithful plans have turned a fortified city into a ruin. Strong peoples will honor Him because He shelters the poor and silences the noise of oppressors. On His mountain He prepares a rich feast for all peoples and removes the covering spread over the nations. He has swallowed death forever and promises to wipe away tears and remove His people’s reproach. Those who waited for Him rejoice in His salvation. His hand rests on the mountain while Moab’s pride and clever strength are trodden down with its high walls.

As you read Isaiah 25, look for the answers:

Reflect together

Key truth

God shelters His people, swallows up death forever and brings proud strength low.

The song answers the vision of the LORD reigning in glory at the end of chapter 24. His old plans have proved faithful, so ruined fortresses become a reason to praise His rule. Shelter from storm and shade from heat describe His care for poor people pressed by cruel strength. The rich meal pictures the abundance He gives the peoples gathered to Him. The covering over the nations is removed, and death itself is swallowed forever. Paul cites this victory when teaching the resurrection of believers through Christ (1 Corinthians 15 verse 54). Their tears and disgrace end because God Himself acts for them. Moab’s humbled walls show the different end of pride that tries to preserve itself.

How does Isaiah 25 show us that God shelters His people, swallows up death forever and brings proud strength low?

God keeps His plans and shelters the needy.

The city’s fortified strength has fallen because God’s purpose stands. The poor find Him a refuge while oppressors rage like a storm. He quiets their noise as shade relieves the heat.

God promises salvation beyond death and tears.

The feast welcomes peoples beneath His generous care. He removes the covering over the nations and swallows death forever. Those who waited for Him rejoice because His salvation has come.

God will humble the pride that opposes Him.

Moab’s strength is trodden down while God’s hand rests on His mountain. The hands spread like a swimmer cannot preserve its pride. High walls fall to the ground before the Lord’s power.

Memorise

He has swallowed up death forever! The Lord Yahweh will wipe away tears from off all faces.

Isaiah 25:8

Looking to Jesus in my life

Ask yourself in your heart, do I hope in the risen Jesus when I think about death?

God’s promise reaches the enemy no fortress can keep out. Isaiah declares, “He has swallowed up death forever!” Tears and disgrace will give way to the joy of people who waited for the LORD.

Death entered a world guilty of sin, and we cannot defeat it by strength or planning. Jesus died for His people, enduring their punishment on the cross. He rose victorious and completed a salvation that is enough forever. On the third day His empty tomb showed that death itself can be swallowed up.

Turn from sin and entrust yourself to the living Jesus. Everyone who trusts Him receives forgiveness and the hope of resurrection life. Bring Him the sorrow and fear that earthly defenses cannot remove. The Savior who has conquered death will fulfill the faithful purpose of God.

Parent's note

Tell your children that God swallows up death forever, and that Jesus rose to defeat it for all who trust Him. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home. Call each child to turn from sin and trust Jesus, and pray that God would give them a new heart.

Pray together

Now please close your time together in prayer. Thank God that His faithful salvation will end death and tears for His people, and bring the heart question to Him. Every child can pray, so let each one say a short prayer if they want to.

When one of those who sat at the table with him heard these things, he said to him, “Blessed is he who will feast in God’s Kingdom!

Luke 14:15

Faithful God, thank You for the risen Jesus and the promise that death will not have the last word. Please turn our hearts to Him in repentance and faith. Comfort those who grieve and teach us to wait for Your salvation. Let that hope shape our family this week. Amen.
