Isaiah 33: The LORD reigns and saves
Begin in prayer
Before we hear frightened people ask God for morning strength, let us seek His mercy. Ask Him to help our family fear His holiness, trust Christ for forgiveness and learn to walk truthfully before Him.
The King’s strength also loves justice. You do establish equity. You execute justice and righteousness in Jacob.
Psalm 99:4
Father in heaven, please open our eyes as we read Your Word. Help us see Your holiness and the guilt we cannot remove. Show us Jesus, the King who saves, and teach us to turn from deceit. Make us more like Jesus. And please bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.
See where we're going
The destroyer who has escaped betrayal will himself be destroyed and betrayed, while God’s people pray for daily strength and salvation. The exalted LORD fills Zion with righteousness, giving stability and making the fear of Him a treasure. Peace ambassadors weep as the covenant is broken, roads empty and the land withers. God rises to burn the peoples like cut thorns, and sinners in Zion tremble before His devouring fire. The one who walks rightly, refuses oppressive gain and bribes, and rejects bloodshed and evil will receive shelter and provision. His people will see the king’s beauty and a settled Jerusalem kept by the LORD as Judge, Lawgiver and King. Weak rigging cannot hold its mast, yet even the lame share plunder, and Zion’s people receive healing and forgiveness.
As you read Isaiah 33, look for the answers:
- What do God’s people ask Him to be every morning? (verse 2)
- What conduct marks the person God shelters? (verses 14 to 16)
- Who is Judge, Lawgiver and King for His people? (verse 22)
Reflect together
Key truth
The holy LORD judges treachery, saves His people and forgives their guilt.
The opening warning turns the destroyer’s own deeds back upon him. The prayer asks for grace and strength each morning, recognizing that salvation comes from the LORD. Sennacherib took Hezekiah’s silver and still threatened Jerusalem, which fits the broken covenant of verse 8 (2 Kings 18 verses 14 to 17). God’s rising terrifies sinners within Zion as well as enemies outside it. The answer to their fear describes truthfulness, refusal of bribes and rejection of violence. These acts mark the righteous life He shelters, and the final promise names forgiveness as His gift. The settled tent and broad rivers picture secure life where His majesty excludes the attacking ship. The chapter’s hope rests on the LORD who rules and saves, gives plunder even to the weak and removes His people’s guilt.
How does Isaiah 33 show us that the holy LORD judges treachery, saves His people and forgives their guilt?
God turns treachery back on the treacherous.
The destroyer has harmed others without suffering the same loss. God announces that his time of destroying will end in destruction. His people answer danger by asking for grace and strength each morning.
God’s holy presence calls for righteous living.
Sinners in Zion fear the devouring fire and everlasting burning. The righteous person speaks truth and refuses gain from oppression or bribery. He will not join bloodshed or delight in evil, and God promises him shelter. Only Jesus has walked this way without sin, and He makes His people new so that they begin to walk in it.
God Himself reigns to save His people.
The beautiful king and settled city replace remembered terror. The LORD is Judge, Lawgiver and King, and His majesty makes His people secure. The closing promise joins their healing to the forgiveness of their iniquity.
Memorise
For Yahweh is our judge. Yahweh is our lawgiver. Yahweh is our king. He will save us.
Isaiah 33:22
Looking to Jesus in my life
Ask yourself in your heart, what deceit am I defending when I need the holy King’s forgiveness in Jesus?
Sinners in Zion ask, “Who among us can live with the devouring fire?” Living near the place of worship cannot hide their guilt. Yet the chapter ends with a promise that its people “will be forgiven their iniquity.” The holy King also saves.
Jesus went through the fire of God’s judgment for His people when He died in their place. He rose from death, and the charge against every believer is gone, because His offering was made once for all. Forgiveness comes through the saving King’s grace.
Turn from deceit, dishonest gain and every sin, and trust Jesus Christ. He receives everyone who believes in Him. The righteousness He gives also bears fruit in truthful speech and honest dealings. Come for His mercy and learn to live before the King whose holiness exposed your need.
Parent's note
Tell your children that the holy LORD judges sin, and that Jesus forgives everyone who comes to Him in faith. Please explain truthful living as the fruit of His grace, in your own words. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home. Call each child to turn from sin and trust Jesus, and pray that God would give them a new heart.
Pray together
Now please close your time together in prayer. Thank God that He is the saving King who forgives His people’s iniquity, and bring the heart question to Him. Every child can pray, so let each one say a short prayer if they want to.
Isaiah said these things when he saw his glory, and spoke of him.
John 12:41
Holy King, thank You for mercy that forgives guilty people through Jesus. Please help us trust Him and turn from the wrong we defend. Teach us to refuse dishonesty and seek Your strength each morning. Help our family live truthfully before You throughout this week. Amen.
