Isaiah

Isaiah 4: God shelters His cleansed people

Begin in prayer

Before we read God’s promise of a shelter over Zion, let us seek Him in prayer. Ask Him to wash away sin and show our family the safety found in Christ.

In the daytime he also led them with a cloud, and all night with a light of fire.

Psalm 78:14

Father in heaven, please open our eyes as we read Your Word. Help us understand Your promise to cleanse and shelter Your people. Show us Christ, the Savior in whom sinners find refuge. Make us more like Jesus. And please bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.

See where we're going

The losses of war leave seven women asking one man to give them his name while they provide their own food and clothing. Beyond that humiliation, the LORD promises His glorious branch and fruitful land for Israel’s survivors. Those left in Jerusalem will be called holy after the Lord washes away its filth and blood. God will spread cloud by day and flaming light by night over Mount Zion and its assemblies. A canopy will cover the glory, with shade from heat and shelter from storms.

As you read Isaiah 4, look for the answers:

Reflect together

Key truth

God cleanses His people and shelters them with His glory.

The opening scene completes the sorrow over men falling in war at the end of chapter 3. The women seek a name to remove their reproach. God’s promised beauty then replaces the beauty stripped from proud Zion. Those written among Jerusalem’s living will be called holy because the Lord has cleansed the city. Justice and burning remove the guilt that its ornaments could never cover. Cloud by day and fire by night recall God’s presence with Israel in the wilderness. He promises that presence over the whole dwelling and its gatherings. The shelter belongs to the people He has made holy.

How does Isaiah 4 show us that God cleanses His people and shelters them with His glory?

God promises beauty after judgment.

The women’s plea grows from the losses of war, yet the city’s sin remains. The LORD’s branch promises beauty that God gives. Isaiah later pictures the promised King as a shoot from Jesse’s roots (Isaiah 11 verses 1 and 2). The beauty ahead is something God gives to the survivors.

God washes away the city’s guilt.

The blood of Jerusalem names guilt from violence, which God will purge. Holiness follows His cleansing action. Being written among the living is a gift preserved through His judgment.

God covers His gathered people with His presence.

The cloud and fire recall the LORD leading Israel through the wilderness (Exodus 13 verses 21 and 22). Here the covering spreads over Zion and its assemblies. His people receive shelter from heat, storm and rain.

Memorise

There will be a pavilion for a shade in the daytime from the heat, and for a refuge and for a shelter from storm and from rain.

Isaiah 4:6

Looking to Jesus in my life

Ask yourself in your heart, will I bring my guilt to Jesus and stop covering it myself?

Over cleansed Zion God promises, “for over all the glory will be a canopy.” The city that had lost its beauty will receive His presence. He washes away its guilt before sheltering its people.

We need that cleansing before we can stand with the holy God. Jesus took the guilt of His people on Himself and was judged for them. He rose from the grave alive, and the redemption He won lasts forever. His people have peace before God, because they have all they need in Him.

Come to Him in repentance and faith. Turn from your sin and rely on Jesus to cleanse you. All who believe receive forgiveness and belong among the people He shelters. His holy presence is the refuge they could never build for themselves.

Parent's note

Tell your children that God’s promised shelter belongs to the people He makes holy. Christ died and rose to cleanse His people from sin. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home. Call each child to turn from sin and trust Jesus, and pray that God would give them a new heart.

Pray together

Now please close your time together in prayer. Thank God that His glory shelters the people He cleanses, and bring the heart question to Him. Every child can pray, so let each one say a short prayer if they want to.

They will come from the east, west, north, and south, and will sit down in God’s Kingdom.

Luke 13:29

Lord God, thank You for promising to cleanse Your people and dwell among them. Please bring our family to trust Christ and turn away from sin. Help us seek shelter in Him when troubles come. Teach us to value holiness and Your presence throughout this week. Amen.
