Isaiah 43: God redeems for His own glory
Begin in prayer
Before we read how the Lord calls His people His own, let us ask for faith in His saving mercy. Pray that our family would hear both His promise of pardon and His charge against weary, sinful worship.
He brought his people out with joy, his chosen with singing.
Psalm 105:43
Father in heaven, please open our eyes as we read Your Word. Help us see that You alone can save and remove our guilt. Bring us to Jesus and teach us to live for Your praise. Make us more like Jesus. And please bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.
See where we're going
God tells Jacob not to fear because He has redeemed His people and calls them His own. He promises His presence through water and fire, gives Egypt, Ethiopia and Seba in their place, and gathers His sons and daughters from every direction. Nations assemble as in court, and Israel is called to witness that the LORD alone is God and Savior. He announces Babylon’s humiliation and a new way through the wilderness, recalling His past rescue through the sea. The people He formed should declare His praise, yet Israel has grown weary of Him and burdened Him with sins instead of honoring Him. God promises to blot out their transgressions for His own sake. The chapter still confronts their first father’s sin and their teachers’ rebellion, with disgrace upon sanctuary leaders and curse and insult upon Israel.
As you read Isaiah 43, look for the answers:
- What reasons does God give His people not to fear? (verses 1 to 7)
- What must His witnesses know about Him as Savior? (verses 10 to 13)
- Why does God blot out transgressions? (verse 25)
Reflect together
Key truth
God alone saves, and He blots out His people’s sins for His own sake.
God’s claim on His people rests on creating, redeeming and calling them. Water and fire picture dangers through which His presence will keep those who belong to Him. Giving other nations in their place shows the costly judgment surrounding their preservation. The gathering from every direction serves His declared purpose that the people He formed would bring Him glory. His witness summons exposes idols that cannot announce events or accomplish salvation. The path through the sea recalls the exodus, while rivers in the wilderness announce a fresh deliverance to come. Yet the people have answered His kindness with weary neglect and sins that burden Him. He blots out guilt for His own sake, while the final charges show that neither ancestors nor teachers provide a ground for claiming innocence.
How does Isaiah 43 show us that God alone saves, and He blots out His people’s sins for His own sake?
God gathers His people for His glory.
He calls them His sons and daughters and commands the distant lands to release them. His promise answers their fear with His presence. The people He forms belong to Him and are to declare His praise.
The LORD alone can accomplish salvation.
He calls His people as witnesses before the nations. No other god preceded Him or will come after Him. God says, “besides me there is no savior” (verse 11). No one can take away what His hand holds or stop the work He determines to do.
God’s pardon comes from His own grace.
Israel has failed to honor Him and has burdened Him with sin. He promises to blot out transgressions for His own sake. The accusations against their forefather and teachers remove any claim that their history makes them innocent.
Memorise
I, even I, am he who blots out your transgressions for my own sake; and I will not remember your sins.
Isaiah 43:25
Looking to Jesus in my life
Ask yourself in your heart, will I stop excusing my guilt and seek pardon in Jesus?
God declares, “besides me there is no savior.” He also promises, “I will not remember your sins.” The people who have wearied Him with rebellion need mercy that comes from His own grace.
That saving mercy is given through Jesus Christ. In the death of Jesus for His people, God blotted out their sins. He rose from death, and the pardon He won lasts forever. He has fully removed their guilt, and nothing they do can add to His work.
Turn from sin and trust the Lord Jesus for forgiveness. All who receive Him in faith are pardoned and held in the Savior’s care. Come with the guilt you have tried to excuse. His mercy gives forgiven people a new purpose, to declare the praise of the God who has made them His own.
Parent's note
Tell your children that God alone saves, and that Jesus blots out the sins of all who trust Him. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home. Call each child to turn from sin and trust Jesus, and pray that God would give them a new heart.
Pray together
Now please close your time together in prayer. Thank God that He alone saves and blots out sin for His own sake, and bring the heart question to Him. Every child can pray, so let each one say a short prayer if they want to.
He said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.
Luke 7:48
Saving God, thank You for mercy that blots out sin through Jesus. Please help us trust Him and stop excusing our wrongs. Teach us to praise You for grace and to hear Your warnings with humble hearts. Let our family make Your goodness known this week. Amen.
