Isaiah 48: God saves for His own name
Begin in prayer
Before God confronts people who use His name without truth, let us ask Him to search our worship. Pray that our family would hear His gracious teaching, leave stubborn sin and seek the peace found in Jesus.
I will praise you, Lord my God, with my whole heart. I will glorify your name forever more.
Psalm 86:12
Father in heaven, please open our eyes as we read Your Word. Help us honor Your name with truthful hearts. Bring us to Christ and make us willing to follow the way You teach. Make us more like Jesus. And please bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.
See where we're going
God addresses people who claim Israel’s name and the holy city while invoking Him without truth or righteousness. He foretold events before doing them so their stubborn hearts could not give idols the credit. He now reveals new things they cannot claim to have known, confronting treachery that has marked them from the beginning. For His name’s sake He restrains His anger, refines them in affliction and refuses to give His glory to another. The Creator summons the one who will act against Babylon, and the speaker declares that the Lord has sent him with His Spirit. God laments their refusal to hear His commands, which would have brought peace like a river and descendants like sand. He commands a joyful departure from Babylon, recalls water given from the rock and warns that the wicked have no peace.
As you read Isaiah 48, look for the answers:
- Why did God announce events before they happened? (verses 3 to 5)
- For whose sake does God restrain His anger? (verses 9 to 11)
- What would hearing God’s commands have brought? (verses 17 to 19)
Reflect together
Key truth
God preserves His stubborn people for His own glory and teaches the way of peace.
Religious names and residence in Jerusalem cannot turn false worship into truth. God compares stubbornness to an iron neck and a bronze forehead that will not yield. God told His people these things long before they happened, so they could never say, “My idol has done them” (verse 5). His restraint of anger rests on His own name and praise, while affliction is pictured as a refining furnace. The water from the rock (verse 21) reminds them that the God who led Israel through the desert will lead them out of Babylon. The Lord’s sent speaker appears with His Spirit, and the Redeemer teaches the way His people should walk. The river and waves describe the abundant peace and righteousness their refusal has forfeited. The joyful call to leave captivity stands beside a final warning that wickedness cannot share God’s peace.
How does Isaiah 48 show us that God preserves His stubborn people for His own glory and teaches the way of peace?
God’s name calls for truthful worship.
The people speak His name while their lives lack truth and righteousness. Their iron neck pictures an unwillingness to bend before Him. God’s announced works expose the idols to which they would give His praise.
God’s mercy serves His own glory.
He restrains the anger their treachery deserves. Affliction does not mean He has abandoned His purpose for them. He refines and preserves His people for the honor of His own name.
God teaches peace that stubbornness refuses.
He leads His people in the way they should go. Their refusal has cost peace like a river and righteousness like the sea’s waves. The call to leave Babylon rejoicing gives no peace to those who continue in wickedness.
Memorise
I am Yahweh your God, who teaches you to profit, who leads you by the way that you should go.
Isaiah 48:17
Looking to Jesus in my life
Ask yourself in your heart, what does my life say about Jesus when my lips say God’s name?
God says, “For my own sake, for my own sake, I will do it.” His people’s treachery cannot earn the mercy He shows. The Redeemer teaches peace, and the closing warning denies it to those who remain wicked.
Jesus brings guilty people peace with the holy God. He gave Himself for His people, and the Father raised Him from death. The debt of sin has been paid in full, displaying the glory of the God who pardons by grace.
Turn from empty profession and trust the Lord Jesus. There is forgiveness and peace with God for all who trust this Redeemer. Do not rest in speaking His name while refusing His Word. Come to the Redeemer for mercy, and ask Him to make your worship truthful and your steps willing.
Parent's note
Tell your children that God rescues for His own name, and that Jesus brings peace to all who trust Him. God’s gracious rescue calls for faith and a willing hearing of His Word. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home. Call each child to turn from sin and trust Jesus, and pray that God would give them a new heart.
Pray together
Now please close your time together in prayer. Thank God that His mercy honors His name and His teaching leads in the way of peace, and bring the heart question to Him. Every child can pray, so let each one say a short prayer if they want to.
saying, “If you, even you, had known today the things which belong to your peace! But now, they are hidden from your eyes.
Luke 19:42
Gracious Lord, thank You for mercy that comes from Your goodness and honors Your name. Please bring us to Jesus for forgiveness and peace. Expose the stubbornness behind our religious words. Teach our family to hear Your commands gladly and praise You for a rescue no sinner could ever earn. Amen.
