Isaiah

Isaiah 51: God comforts with everlasting salvation

Begin in prayer

Before we listen as God comforts people afraid of their oppressors, let us remember who made heaven and earth. Ask Him to teach our family to seek lasting salvation in Jesus rather than fear people whose lives soon end.

I will walk before Yahweh in the land of the living.

Psalm 116:9

Father in heaven, please open our eyes as we read Your Word. Show us the lasting strength of Your salvation. Bring us to Christ for mercy and teach us to trust Your faithful comfort. Make us more like Jesus. And please bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.

See where we're going

God calls those seeking Him to remember how He multiplied Abraham and Sarah and promises to make ruined Zion like Eden. His justice will become a light to the peoples, and His salvation will outlast the heavens, earth and human insults. A plea for His mighty arm recalls the sea dried into a road for the redeemed. God answers fear of dying oppressors with the promise of freedom and the comfort of the Creator. Jerusalem has drained the cup of His wrath, suffering desolation, famine and sword while her children lie helpless. The Lord who pleads His people’s cause will take that cup from her and give it to those who trampled her.

As you read Isaiah 51, look for the answers:

Reflect together

Key truth

God comforts His afflicted people, and He takes away the cup of His wrath.

The rock and quarry are explained by Abraham and Sarah, from whom God made a great people despite their small beginning. Remembering that work gives ruined Zion reason to expect His promised comfort. Smoke, a worn garment and dying grass show how brief the things people fear are beside His everlasting salvation. Rahab and the pierced monster picture the defeated oppressor Egypt, as the next verse recalls the path through the sea. The repeated cry for God’s arm asks Him to act with the power He showed in that rescue. The Creator’s comfort corrects fear that has forgotten who stretched out the heavens. Jerusalem’s staggering comes from God’s wrath, not from wine, and her helpless children cannot guide her home. God Himself removes the cup and gives it to the cruel oppressors who made her back a road.

How does Isaiah 51 show us that God comforts His afflicted people, and He takes away the cup of His wrath?

God’s salvation lasts beyond every earthly strength.

He made many descendants from Abraham and Sarah when their beginning seemed small. He promises comfort for Zion’s ruins and justice for the nations. Human insults will perish, but His righteousness and salvation endure.

God’s people need not be ruled by mortal fear.

The cry for His arm remembers the way through the sea. God answers by naming Himself as their Maker and Comforter. The oppressor’s fury cannot overturn His promise to free the captive.

God Himself takes away His people’s judgment.

The cup pictures His wrath, which has brought desolation, famine and sword. No child can take helpless Jerusalem by the hand. The Lord who pleads her cause removes that cup and judges those who trampled her.

Memorise

My salvation will be forever, and my righteousness will not be abolished.

Isaiah 51:6

Looking to Jesus in my life

Ask yourself in your heart, whose threats am I fearing more than the God who saves through Jesus?

Jerusalem cannot empty the cup of God’s wrath by finding a stronger child to lead her. The Lord Himself must take it away. His comfort brings a rescue that human strength cannot supply.

Jesus willingly accepted the cup His Father gave Him. In Gethsemane He prayed that the Father’s will be done (Matthew 26 verses 39 to 42). At the cross He bore the punishment for His people’s sins and died in their place. He rose from death, with the saving work complete. His sacrifice is enough for their forgiveness and lasting peace with God.

Turn from sin and trust Jesus, who alone delivers guilty people from judgment. All who believe in Him receive mercy. Bring Him the fears that make mortal threats seem greater than God’s promise. His salvation will remain when the powers you fear have passed away.

Parent's note

Tell your children that Jerusalem’s suffering includes God’s real judgment, and only He can remove the cup. Jesus brings lasting comfort through His finished saving work. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home. Call each child to turn from sin and trust Jesus, and pray that God would give them a new heart.

Pray together

Now please close your time together in prayer. Thank God that His salvation lasts forever and He provides deliverance from judgment, and bring the heart question to Him. Every child can pray, so let each one say a short prayer if they want to.

saying, “Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.

Luke 22:42

Lord, the Comforter of Your people, thank You for salvation that outlasts every earthly power. Please lead us to trust Jesus, who willingly bore judgment for His people. Forgive our fear and unbelief through Him. Teach our family to remember Your mighty works and seek Your lasting mercy when people threaten us. Amen.
