Isaiah

Isaiah 54: God’s covenant mercy will remain

Begin in prayer

Before we read of the forsaken city called to sing, let us seek the God whose mercy does not fail. Ask Him to teach our family the hope of His covenant and lead us to Christ for the righteousness we need.

But I will not completely take my loving kindness from him, nor allow my faithfulness to fail.

Psalm 89:33

Father in heaven, please open our eyes as we read Your Word. Help us understand Your enduring mercy and the peace You give Your people. Draw us to Jesus in believing trust. Make us more like Jesus. And please bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.

See where we're going

God tells barren Zion to sing and enlarge her tent because her children will fill desolate cities and spread among nations. Her shame will pass, for her Maker is her husband and the Holy One is her Redeemer. He acknowledges the wrath in which He hid His face, then promises to gather her with everlasting mercy. As He swore concerning Noah’s flood, He promises a covenant of peace that will remain when mountains move. The storm tossed city will be rebuilt with precious stones, and her children will be taught by God and enjoy great peace. God will establish her in righteousness, defeat hostile gatherings and uphold His servants against weapons and accusing tongues. Their righteousness comes from Him, who also made the craftsman and the destroyer.

As you read Isaiah 54, look for the answers:

Reflect together

Key truth

God restores His people with enduring mercy, and He gives them lasting peace.

Zion appears as a childless woman called to prepare a larger home before she sees the promised children. The growing tent pictures a restored people too numerous for the old boundaries. God names Himself her husband to promise faithful commitment after the grief of forsaking. His lasting mercy does not deny the wrath He has just acknowledged. The oath recalls His promise that Noah’s flood would not cover the earth again (Genesis 9 verses 9 to 17). The LORD will teach all her children, and great will be their peace (verse 13). Enemies may gather without His approval, but neither their weapons nor accusations can overthrow the inheritance His servants receive from Him.

How does Isaiah 54 show us that God restores His people with enduring mercy, and He gives them lasting peace?

God’s promise gives His desolate people reason to sing.

Zion must stretch her tent and strengthen its stakes. God promises children and occupied cities where desolation had been. Her Maker calls Himself her husband and Redeemer, pledging His faithful care.

God’s covenant mercy outlasts His people’s distress.

He has not hidden the reality of His wrath. Yet He promises to gather the forsaken with everlasting kindness. Even the removal of mountains cannot remove His covenant of peace.

God gives His servants righteousness and lasting peace.

He rebuilds the afflicted city with precious stones and teaches her children. Hostile gatherings and accusing tongues will fail against His purpose. Their inheritance rests on righteousness that comes from Him.

Memorise

In overflowing wrath I hid my face from you for a moment; but with everlasting loving kindness I will have mercy on you,” says Yahweh your Redeemer.

Isaiah 54:8

Looking to Jesus in my life

Ask yourself in your heart, what righteousness am I presenting to God apart from Jesus?

The promise ends with God saying of His servants, “their righteousness is of me.” The city’s renewed beauty and peace come from the Redeemer who gathers the forsaken. She cannot rebuild herself into acceptance with Him.

Jesus provides the righteousness guilty people need. As the Redeemer, He paid the price for His people with His own life. He rose, and His work, done once for all, gives them the acceptance they could never earn. Jesus connects God’s promised teaching with people hearing the Father and coming to Him (John 6 verses 44 to 47).

Turn from sin and come to Christ in faith. Everyone who believes receives forgiveness and peace with God through His finished saving work. Ask Him to turn you from self made righteousness and teach you through His Word. His covenant mercy will not fail those who belong to Him.

Parent's note

Tell your children that God’s picture of marriage here teaches His own covenant faithfulness to His people. His promised peace and righteousness call every listener to seek Christ in faith. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home. Call each child to turn from sin and trust Jesus, and pray that God would give them a new heart.

Pray together

Now please close your time together in prayer. Thank God that His covenant mercy remains and His servants receive righteousness from Him, and bring the heart question to Him. Every child can pray, so let each one say a short prayer if they want to.

Let us rejoice and be exceedingly glad, and let us give the glory to him. For the marriage of the Lamb has come, and his wife has made herself ready.”

Revelation 19:7

Faithful Redeemer, thank You for mercy that does not depend on our power to keep ourselves. Please draw us to Jesus for forgiveness and righteousness. Let Your Word shape our family. Help us trust Your covenant kindness through distress and show that kindness in our care for one another. Amen.
