Isaiah

Isaiah 55: God freely pardons returning sinners

Begin in prayer

Before we hear God invite thirsty people to come without money, let us bring Him our need. Ask Him to expose the empty things our family pursues and lead us to the free pardon and life found in Jesus.

Hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted in them.

Psalm 107:5

Father in heaven, please open our eyes as we read Your Word. Teach us to hear Your invitation and leave our sinful ways. Turn us to Jesus for the free mercy we cannot earn. Make us more like Jesus. And please bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.

See where we're going

God invites everyone who thirsts to receive water, wine and milk without money, so they need not labor for things that do not satisfy. He calls them to listen and live, promising an everlasting covenant with the sure mercies of David. The appointed witness and leader will draw nations that did not know Him. Wicked people must seek the LORD while He is near, forsake their ways and thoughts, and return to His abundant pardon. God’s ways and thoughts stand higher than theirs, and His Word accomplishes its purpose as rain makes the earth fruitful. Joy and peace will accompany the departure, with singing mountains, clapping trees and useful growth replacing thorns as a lasting sign of His honor.

Reflect together

Key truth

God freely pardons those who return to Him and accomplishes His gracious purpose through His effective Word.

The invitation addresses people unable to buy what they need and promises a feast without a price. Food and drink picture the soul’s life and satisfaction through hearing God. His covenant carries the faithful mercies promised to David, which Paul connects to Jesus raised from death (Acts 13 verses 32 to 39). Nations are drawn to the leader whom God honors, extending the welcome beyond those who already know Him. The call to seek God is urgent and requires forsaking both wicked conduct and unrighteous thoughts. God’s higher ways explain the abundance of His pardon rather than excusing continued rebellion. Rain produces growth before returning, and His spoken Word likewise fulfills the purpose for which He sends it. Singing hills, clapping trees and new growth picture joyful restoration that will honor His name.

How does Isaiah 55 show us that God freely pardons those who return to Him and accomplishes His gracious purpose through His effective Word?

God gives life that our spending cannot buy.

He calls hungry and thirsty people to come without money. Listening to Him brings what empty labor cannot supply. His everlasting covenant extends the faithful mercies of David to those who hear and come.

God offers abundant pardon to returning sinners.

They must forsake wicked ways and unrighteous thoughts. The invitation to seek Him while He is near gives no reason to delay. His ways rise above ours in the mercy He freely promises.

God’s Word accomplishes the purpose He sends it for.

Rain waters the earth and produces seed and bread. God’s Word is no less effective in carrying out His will. The promised joy and changed landscape will stand as an enduring sign of His honor.

Memorise

Come, everyone who thirsts, to the waters! Come, he who has no money, buy, and eat! Yes, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.

Isaiah 55:1

Looking to Jesus in my life

Ask yourself in your heart, what empty pursuit must I leave as I come to Jesus for free pardon?

God asks, “Why do you spend money for that which is not bread?” His invitation offers life to people who cannot pay, and His call to return promises abundant pardon. Our empty pursuits cannot provide what He freely gives.

The sure mercies of David are fulfilled in Jesus, whom God raised from death (Acts 13 verses 32 to 39). Jesus paid the price for His people once for all, so the water and wine of His forgiveness cost believing sinners nothing.

Turn from sin and seek Him now in faith. Leave the wicked ways and thoughts you have cherished, and trust Jesus for the mercy you cannot earn. Everyone who believes in Him receives pardon. Hear His Word as the truthful promise of the God whose gracious purpose will succeed.

Parent's note

Tell your children that free pardon cannot be bought by good behavior, and the call to repent is real. Urge them to hear God and come to Jesus now. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home. Call each child to turn from sin and trust Jesus, and pray that God would give them a new heart.

Pray together

Now please close your time together in prayer. Thank God that He freely pardons returning sinners and His Word accomplishes His purpose, and bring the heart question to Him. Every child can pray, so let each one say a short prayer if they want to.

Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.

Matthew 5:3

Merciful God, thank You for inviting needy people to receive what they cannot buy. Please bring us to trust Jesus for free pardon. Turn us from wicked ways, wrong thoughts and pursuits that leave us empty. Teach our family to hear Your Word and rest in the purpose You will accomplish. Amen.
