Isaiah 56: God gathers outsiders to joyful worship
Begin in prayer
Before we watch God welcome those afraid of being left outside, let us ask Him for believing hearts. Ask Him to help our family love His name, hear His call to justice and find joyful welcome through Jesus.
Give thanks to Yahweh! Call on his name! Make his doings known among the peoples.
Psalm 105:1
Father in heaven, please open our eyes as we read Your Word. Help us understand Your gracious welcome and the holiness You require. Bring us to Jesus and make our worship sincere. Make us more like Jesus. And please bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.
See where we're going
God calls people to maintain justice and do right because His salvation and righteousness are near. He blesses those who keep His Sabbath and turn their hands from evil. Foreigners joined to Him must not fear exclusion, and eunuchs who hold His covenant will receive a lasting name better than children. He will bring these servants to His holy mountain and accept their offerings in a house of prayer for all peoples. The God who gathers Israel’s outcasts promises to gather still others. Yet He summons beasts to devour while the watchmen sleep like silent dogs and the shepherds pursue gain, strong drink and endless ease.
As you read Isaiah 56, look for the answers:
- Who will God bring to His house of prayer? (verses 6 and 7)
- What does God promise to do besides gathering Israel’s outcasts? (verse 8)
- What do the unfaithful shepherds seek for themselves? (verses 11 and 12)
Reflect together
Key truth
God gathers outsiders to His house of prayer.
God’s salvation is near, so His people must do justice and keep their hands from evil (verses 1 and 2). The Sabbath is the day of rest God gave His people, and honoring it belongs with keeping their hands from evil. Foreign birth must not exclude those who join themselves to the LORD and love His name. A eunuch unable to have children may feel like a dry tree, but God promises a name that will not be cut off. The welcome includes covenant faithfulness and joyful prayer, not acceptance of worship directed to other gods. Jesus later quotes the house of prayer promise when confronting corruption in the temple (Mark 11 verses 15 to 18). Blind watchmen and dogs unable to bark picture leaders who fail to recognize danger or warn the people. Their greed and drinking leave the flock exposed while God promises to gather those they have neglected.
How does Isaiah 56 show us that God gathers outsiders to His house of prayer?
God’s welcome reaches people who fear exclusion.
Foreigners who join Him must not say they will be separated from His people. He gives covenant keepers a lasting place and name. His house of prayer will receive people from every nation.
God’s saving promise calls for faithful worship.
His people must maintain justice and keep their hands from evil. The day of rest He gave them must be honored. Those He welcomes love His name and hold fast His covenant.
God sees leaders who serve their own appetites.
Watchmen should see danger and give warning. These leaders are blind, silent and asleep while pursuing their own gain. Their confidence in another day of drinking ignores the danger facing the flock.
Memorise
I will yet gather others to him, besides his own who are gathered.
Isaiah 56:8
Looking to Jesus in my life
Ask yourself in your heart, what selfish desire is keeping me from loving the name of Jesus and serving others?
God promises, “my house will be called a house of prayer for all peoples.” Foreign birth and the loss of an earthly family line cannot shut out those He gathers. His welcome calls them to love His name and hold His covenant.
Jesus cleared the temple court for the nations, and then He died for His people. He rose victorious, and His sacrifice is enough for the forgiveness of everyone who believes, whatever nation they come from.
Turn from sin and trust Jesus for this welcome. No family background can earn it, and no earthly loss can cancel His promise to believers. Come to the Savior, receive His mercy and ask Him to make your worship faithful. The Savior who gathers outsiders still gathers, and His house is a house of prayer for all peoples.
Parent's note
Tell your children that God welcomes those who love His name and hold His covenant. Please explain His promise to those unable to have children gently, without adding bodily detail. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home. Call each child to turn from sin and trust Jesus, and pray that God would give them a new heart.
Pray together
Now please close your time together in prayer. Thank God that His gracious welcome gathers people from every nation to worship Him, and bring the heart question to Him. Every child can pray, so let each one say a short prayer if they want to.
He said to them, “It is written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer,’ but you have made it a den of robbers!”
Matthew 21:13
God of mercy, thank You for gathering people who could never earn a place before You. Please bring us to trust Jesus for forgiveness and welcome. Teach us to love Your name, honor Your Word and care for others. Turn our family from selfish gain to joyful worship and faithful service. Amen.
