Isaiah

Isaiah 58: God exposes worship without justice

Begin in prayer

Before we ask why God rejects the people’s fasting, let us ask Him to search our worship and our treatment of others. Pray that our family would leave cruel self interest and find mercy and a willing heart through Jesus.

Direct me in the path of your commandments, for I delight in them.

Psalm 119:35

Father in heaven, please open our eyes as we read Your Word. Expose the sin we try to hide behind worship. Bring us to Christ for mercy and teach us to delight in You. Make us more like Jesus. And please bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.

See where we're going

God tells His messenger to cry like a trumpet and expose the sins of people who appear eager to seek Him. They complain that He ignores their fasting while they oppress workers, quarrel and strike with wicked fists. God rejects bowed heads, sackcloth and ashes that leave such cruelty unchanged. The fast He chooses frees the oppressed and shares food, shelter and clothing with those in need. He promises light, healing, answered prayer and guidance when they remove oppression, accusing gestures and wicked speech and care for the afflicted. Their ruined places will be rebuilt, and they must honor His Sabbath as a delight and lay aside their own pleasure. Then they will delight in Him and enjoy the inheritance He promised to Jacob.

As you read Isaiah 58, look for the answers:

Reflect together

Key truth

God sees through worship that hides cruelty, and He calls His people to mercy and delight in Him.

Fasting means going without food, but the people combine that sign of humility with oppression of their workers. Their bowed heads and rough mourning cloth cannot make an unchanged life pleasing to God. The yoke pictures the burdens they impose on others, which God commands them to break. Sharing bread, housing the homeless and clothing the poorly dressed make mercy concrete. God includes their own flesh, calling them not to avoid the needs of their own people. He connects His promised light and guidance with leaving cruel deeds, gestures and words behind. The watered garden pictures life supplied by His care, and repaired paths picture a community restored from ruin. His Sabbath, the day of rest given to His people, calls them away from their own business and toward delight in Him.

How does Isaiah 58 show us that God sees through worship that hides cruelty, and He calls His people to mercy and delight in Him?

God sees the cruelty behind religious appearances.

The people seek Him daily and ask for His judgments. Yet they make their workers suffer and use fists against others. God sends Isaiah to tell this to His own people, the house of Jacob (verse 1). Their fasting cannot make that way of life acceptable.

God calls His people to show mercy.

They must release the oppressed and lift the heavy burdens from others. Hunger, homelessness and lack of clothing require actual help. Their own people’s needs must not be hidden from view.

God promises His presence along the way He commands.

He joins light and answered prayer with removing oppression and caring for the afflicted. His care will refresh them like a watered garden and restore ruined places. Honoring His day means finding delight in Him and setting their own pleasures aside.

Memorise

Behold, you fast for strife and contention, and to strike with the fist of wickedness. You don’t fast today so as to make your voice to be heard on high.

Isaiah 58:4

Looking to Jesus in my life

Ask yourself in your heart, where does my worship hide unkindness that Jesus must forgive and change?

The people ask why God does not notice their fasting. He answers by exposing the workers they oppress and the needy they refuse to help. Religious effort cannot cover an unwillingness to love the people He commands them to serve.

We need a Savior who can forgive and change such hearts. Jesus broke the yoke of sin by giving His life for His people. He rose, and no fast or act of kindness can add to what He finished once for all. His mercy frees believers to obey rather than use worship to defend their sin.

Turn from hardhearted worship and trust Jesus. Everyone who believes in Him receives pardon. Ask Him to make you attentive to the hungry, burdened and lonely people within your reach. Hear His Word with a willing heart and seek the delight in God that empty religious appearances cannot give.

Parent's note

Tell your children that mercy and obedience cannot buy forgiveness, and accepted worship cannot be joined to cherished cruelty. Keep the Sabbath explanation to the day of rest God gave His people. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home. Call each child to turn from sin and trust Jesus, and pray that God would give them a new heart.

Pray together

Now please close your time together in prayer. Thank God that He exposes empty worship and calls His people into mercy and delight in Him, and bring the heart question to Him. Every child can pray, so let each one say a short prayer if they want to.

Of how much more value then is a man than a sheep! Therefore it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath day.

Matthew 12:12

Lord, thank You for seeing the people our religious words can overlook. Please turn us to Jesus for pardon and changed hearts. Forgive our harshness and neglect through Him. Teach our family to help those in need, honor Your Word and delight in You throughout the coming week. Amen.
