Isaiah 60: God becomes His people’s everlasting light
Begin in prayer
Before we read of God’s glory shining on His people, let us ask Him to turn our eyes toward His promised salvation. Ask Him to help our family come to Jesus for light and place our hope in the joy He will complete.
The heavens declare his righteousness. All the peoples have seen his glory.
Psalm 97:6
Father in heaven, please open our eyes as we read Your Word. Show us the glory of Your saving purpose and the hope of Your everlasting light. Help us trust Christ through present darkness. Make us more like Jesus. And please bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.
See where we're going
God calls His people to arise because His glory shines upon them while darkness covers the nations. Kings and peoples will come to their light, bringing children home with wealth, flocks, gold and incense for His praise. Foreigners will rebuild walls and kings will serve, while nations refusing that service will perish. The place once forsaken will become an everlasting joy, honored by the children of those who had despised it. God will bring gold for brass and silver for iron and establish peace and righteousness where violence and destruction had ruled. He Himself will be the everlasting light that ends their mourning and makes sun and moon unnecessary. All His people will be righteous, His own planting, and He will bring their promised growth quickly at the appointed time.
As you read Isaiah 60, look for the answers:
- Why will nations come to God’s people? (verses 1 to 3)
- What will happen to nations that refuse to serve? (verse 12)
- Who will be the everlasting light when mourning ends? (verses 19 and 20)
Reflect together
Key truth
God gathers the nations to His people, and He becomes their everlasting light.
The light belongs first to God, whose rising glory makes His people shine before the nations. The crowds coming with children and wealth reverse the city’s isolation and loss. Open gates picture welcome and safety, yet the warning of perishing excludes any hope that rebellion will remain secure. Better materials and rulers named Peace and Righteousness picture a city changed by God’s favor after His wrath. The promise rests on God’s planting, His work and His timing, with all praise belonging to Him.
How does Isaiah 60 show us that God gathers the nations to His people, and He becomes their everlasting light?
God’s shining glory gathers nations to His people.
His light rises while darkness covers the earth. Children return from far away, and nations bring their wealth for His praise. The city’s joy comes from the favor of its Savior and Redeemer.
God replaces former shame with honor and peace.
Foreigners rebuild what was ruined, and former enemies bow before His city. Nations that refuse to serve will perish. Violence and destruction give way to peace and righteousness.
God Himself will be His people’s everlasting light.
His presence will make sun and moon unnecessary. Mourning will end, and all His people will be righteous. They are the work of His hands, and their growth will come at the time He appoints.
Memorise
Arise, shine; for your light has come, and Yahweh’s glory has risen on you.
Isaiah 60:1
Looking to Jesus in my life
Ask yourself in your heart, what present darkness must I bring to Jesus while waiting for His promised light?
The promise rises beyond wealth returning to a ruined city. God says, “Yahweh will be your everlasting light, and the days of your mourning will end.” His own presence brings the joy that darkness and violence cannot extinguish.
Revelation shows the holy city lit by God’s glory, with the Lamb as its lamp (Revelation 21 verses 22 to 27). Jesus is the Lamb who was slain for His people. He rose in victory, and His sacrifice needs nothing added to secure forgiveness and a place among His righteous people.
Turn from sin and trust this Savior. Everyone who believes in Him receives mercy and the hope of life with God. Bring Him the darkness you cannot remove for yourself. The God who has accomplished salvation through His Son will complete His promise in His own time.
Parent's note
Tell your children that this promised glory belongs to the righteous people God makes and gathers. Do not turn the wealth pictures into a promise that believers must become rich now. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home. Call each child to turn from sin and trust Jesus, and pray that God would give them a new heart.
Pray together
Now please close your time together in prayer. Thank God that He will be His people’s everlasting light and bring their mourning to an end, and bring the heart question to Him. Every child can pray, so let each one say a short prayer if they want to.
because of the tender mercy of our God, whereby the dawn from on high will visit us, to shine on those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death; to guide our feet into the way of peace.
Luke 1:78-79
Glorious God, thank You for the promise that darkness and mourning will not last among Your redeemed people. Please bring us to Jesus for forgiveness and hope. Help us wait for Your appointed time. Let Your promised light shape our trust, praise and care for others today. Amen.
