Isaiah

Isaiah 64: Only God makes the unclean clean

Begin in prayer

Before we read a prayer from people who cannot hide their guilt, let us ask God for honest hearts. Pray that our family would confess sin, leave confidence in our own goodness and come to Jesus for cleansing and mercy.

With my whole heart, I have sought you. Don’t let me wander from your commandments.

Psalm 119:10

Father in heaven, please open our eyes as we read Your Word. Help us confess our guilt without excuses. Show us the mercy found in Christ and teach us to depend on You. Make us more like Jesus. And please bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.

See where we're going

The prayer asks God to tear the heavens and come down so mountains quake and nations tremble before His name. Past mighty acts show that no other god works for those who wait for Him. Yet the people confess long continued sin and ask whether they can be saved. They are unclean, their righteousness is like a polluted garment, and their iniquities carry them away like windblown leaves. No one calls upon God as they should, and He has hidden His face and consumed them through their sins. They appeal to Him as Father and Potter, asking Him not to remember their iniquity forever. Their cities are desolate and their beautiful house of worship lies burned, so they plead that He will no longer remain silent.

As you read Isaiah 64, look for the answers:

Key truth

God alone can cleanse guilty people, who must seek His powerful presence and mercy.

Tearing the heavens expresses an urgent request for God to reveal His power, as mountains shook before Him in former days. The prayer remembers that He acts for those who wait and meets people who gladly do righteousness. That memory exposes the contrast with their own long continued rebellion. A polluted garment cannot make its wearer clean, so even their righteousness offers no ground for demanding acceptance. Calling Him Father and Potter appeals to the mercy of the One who made them, while confessing they depend upon His hand. The ruined cities and burned temple deepen the plea without becoming an excuse for the sins they have confessed.

How does Isaiah 64 show us that God alone can cleanse guilty people, who must seek His powerful presence and mercy?

God alone can provide the help His people need.

They ask Him to come down and make nations tremble. They remember mighty deeds that no rival god could perform. Waiting for Him expresses dependence on His power.

Confession leaves no room for boasting in our goodness.

The people acknowledge long continued sin. Their righteousness is like a polluted garment, and their sins carry them away like leaves. Neglect of prayer belongs to the rebellion they confess.

Guilty people must seek mercy from their Maker.

Clay depends entirely upon the potter who shapes it. The people use that picture while calling God their Father. They ask Him to stop remembering their iniquity and look with mercy upon His ruined people.

Memorise

We are the clay, and you our potter. We all are the work of your hand.

Isaiah 64:8

Looking to Jesus in my life

Ask yourself in your heart, what goodness am I trusting to cover the guilt I must bring to Jesus?

The confession says that “all our righteousness is like a polluted garment.” The people cannot weave their own acceptance before the holy God. They plead for their Father to remember mercy because even what they call good is stained.

Jesus provides the righteousness guilty people lack. He took the filthy garment of their guilt on Himself and gave His life for His people. He rose alive, and His obedience supplies the acceptance their own stained works cannot earn, because His sacrifice needs nothing added. Through Him believers may approach God as their Father.

Turn from sin and trust Jesus instead of your own goodness. Confess the neglect of prayer and disobedience that you have tried to excuse. Everyone who believes in Him receives forgiveness. The Savior who makes the unclean clean receives every sinner who comes to Him with empty hands.

Parent's note

Tell your children that the polluted garment pictures guilt, without adding bodily details. Confession includes neglected prayer, and the plea to the Potter expresses dependence rather than an excuse for sin. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home. Call each child to turn from sin and trust Jesus, and pray that God would give them a new heart.

Pray together

Now please close your time together in prayer. Thank God that He alone can cleanse guilty people and provides righteousness through His Son, and bring the heart question to Him. Every child can pray, so let each one say a short prayer if they want to.

Blessed are the gentle, for they shall inherit the earth.

Matthew 5:5

Holy God, thank You for showing us the truth about our guilt and the mercy found in Jesus. Please bring us to trust His righteousness instead of our own. Forgive our neglect of prayer and our stubborn disobedience through Him. Shape our family by Your Word and make us ready to seek You in every need. Amen.
