Isaiah 8: God is the refuge to fear
Begin in prayer
Before we read of a flood sweeping through Judah, let us seek the Lord who rules over it. Ask Him to replace our fear of people with reverence for Him and confidence in Christ.
You are my hiding place and my shield. I hope in your word.
Psalm 119:114
Father in heaven, please open our eyes as we read Your Word. Help us understand Your holy authority and listen to Your Word. Show us Christ as the refuge sinners need when every false hope fails. Make us more like Jesus. And please bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.
See where we're going
God gives Isaiah’s son a name that announces the coming plunder of Damascus and Samaria. Assyria will take their riches before the boy can call for his father or mother. Because the people reject Shiloah’s gentle waters, God will bring Assyria like a river overflowing into Judah. The nations’ plans will fail because God is with His people. Isaiah must fear the holy LORD, who will be a sanctuary and also a snare for the disobedient. While Isaiah waits for God, those who consult the dead and reject His Word face hunger and thick darkness.
As you read Isaiah 8, look for the answers:
- Who must Isaiah fear and respect as holy? (verses 12 to 15)
- Where should people seek guidance when others tell them to consult the dead? (verses 19 and 20)
Reflect together
Key truth
The holy LORD is a refuge, and His word exposes every false hope.
The child’s name announces swift spoil, and faithful witnesses confirm the message before the predicted plunder comes. His early speech becomes the clock for the fall of Damascus and Samaria. The quiet waters and the overflowing river show the difference between God’s care and the destructive strength people seek. Assyria will reach Judah’s neck, an image of grave danger. God tells Isaiah to measure danger by His holiness rather than by public fears. The same Lord is shelter for faith and a snare for rebellion. Consulting the dead abandons the living God’s testimony. His written word is the test of every claim to guidance.
How does Isaiah 8 show us that the holy LORD is a refuge, and His word exposes every false hope?
God’s word rules the rise of Assyria.
The promised plunder has a deadline tied to the child learning his first words. God then describes the Assyrian advance as a flood. Judah’s danger is under His authority, even when the waters reach the neck.
The holy Lord is the One to fear.
Isaiah must refuse the people’s panic and honor the LORD as holy. He is a sanctuary, a place of refuge. Those who reject Him will stumble, fall and be captured. Paul takes up this stumbling stone and says no one who believes in Him will be disappointed (Romans 9 verse 33).
God’s testimony exposes false guidance.
Turning to spirits and the dead cannot give the light found in God’s word. Isaiah seals the testimony among his disciples and waits while the LORD hides His face from Jacob. Those whose speech contradicts that word grow hungry and curse their king and their God before being driven into darkness.
Memorise
Yahweh of Armies is who you must respect as holy. He is the one you must fear. He is the one you must dread.
Isaiah 8:13
Looking to Jesus in my life
Ask yourself in your heart, will I fear the Lord Jesus more than I fear what people say?
Isaiah says, “I will wait for Yahweh,” while others seek voices from the dead. The holy Lord will be “a sanctuary,” and rebellion against Him brings ruin. Safety begins with hearing the God people refuse to consult.
Jesus is the holy Savior sinners need, the sanctuary God promised. He was struck down for His people, and the Father raised Him to life. His finished sacrifice gives solid ground for peace with God, and nothing more is needed.
Turn from the voices that draw you away from God and believe in Jesus. Seek His mercy through the Word He has given. Forgiveness is promised to those who entrust themselves to Him. The Lord who deserves your fear is the refuge you need.
Parent's note
Tell your children that God forbids seeking guidance from the dead and calls people to His Word. Jesus alone saves guilty people from judgment. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home. Call each child to turn from sin and trust Jesus, and pray that God would give them a new heart.
Pray together
Now please close your time together in prayer. Thank God that His holy Word leads people away from false hope, and bring the heart question to Him. Every child can pray, so let each one say a short prayer if they want to.
Don’t be afraid of those who kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul. Rather, fear him who is able to destroy both soul and body in Gehenna.
Matthew 10:28
Lord God, thank You for giving Your Word when false voices promise help. Please lead us away from sin and into faith in Jesus. Teach us to fear You above people. During this week, help us judge every message by the truth You have spoken. Amen.
