Jeremiah 2: God exposes empty hopes
Begin in prayer
Before we read about people leaving fresh water for broken tanks, let us come to the God who gives life. Ask Him to search our hearts, to meet with our family, and to show us why we need Christ.
Oh that my people would listen to me, that Israel would walk in my ways!
Psalms 81:13
Father in heaven, open our eyes to the folly of leaving You for empty hopes. Show us Jesus, who gives living water, and lead us to trust Him. Make us more like Him in faithful love. Please bless our family as we hear Your warning. In Jesus' name, Amen.
See where we're going
The LORD recalls Israel following Him through the wilderness, like a bride with her husband. He brought them into a fruitful land, yet people and leaders deserted Him for worthless gods. They left the spring of living water and dug broken cisterns that held nothing. Instead of trusting their Deliverer, they sought help from Egypt and Assyria. Idolatry, the killing of prophets and the blood of innocent poor people exposed their claims of innocence. The LORD would judge their rebellion, and the nations they trusted would bring them shame.
As you read Jeremiah 2, look for the answers:
- What two evils have the people committed? (verse 13)
- What does the LORD say about their claim to be clean? (verse 22)
- Why will the people’s trusted helpers fail? (verses 36 and 37)
Reflect together
Key truth
God gives life and exposes the emptiness of every substitute.
The marriage picture makes Israel’s departure a betrayal of the LORD who had loved and led them. Calling Israel His first fruits marked them as set apart for Him, with judgment for those who devoured them. They had received a plentiful land, yet their priests and rulers no longer sought the God who gave it. A spring keeps supplying fresh water, while a broken storage tank loses what is poured into it. This explained their exchange of the living God for powerless idols. Seeking Egypt and Assyria repeated that exchange, as they preferred foreign help to the LORD’s care. Even strong washing could never erase the guilt God saw before Him. Denying that guilt invited judgment, and their chosen allies could never provide the rescue they needed.
How does Jeremiah 2 show us that God gives life and exposes the emptiness of every substitute?
God had given His people every reason to trust Him.
The LORD led Israel through a barren wilderness and brought them into a fruitful land (verses 6 and 7). His question about their departure exposes the absence of any wrong in Him. Their unfaithfulness began as they forgot His goodness.
False gods and powerful nations cannot replace the living God.
Cisterns were storage places for water, and cracks made them useless. God used this familiar failure to expose their trust in idols (verse 13). Turning to Egypt and Assyria for help was another way of leaving Him.
God sees the guilt that people try to deny.
The people pursued idols with the restless eagerness pictured by wandering animals (verses 23 to 25). Their sword killed prophets, and innocent poor people’s blood stained their clothing. Soap could wash clothes, while their guilt remained before God. Their claim to be innocent became another reason for His judgment (verse 35).
Memorize
“For my people have committed two evils: they have forsaken me, the spring of living waters, and cut them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.
Jeremiah 2:13
Looking to Jesus in my life
Ask yourself in your heart, what empty hope am I choosing instead of coming to Jesus for life?
The LORD calls Himself “the spring of living waters.” His people abandoned Him for broken cisterns, then claimed to be clean. Our hearts also reach for substitutes that cannot remove our guilt or give lasting life.
Jesus offered living water that leads to eternal life (John 4 verses 10 to 14). Jesus gave His life for His people under God’s judgment, so that guilty people could be cleansed. His sacrifice is sufficient, and nothing more is owed. He was raised alive from the grave.
Leave the false hopes that keep you from Him. Turn from those false hopes and trust the Lord Jesus. Every sinner who comes to Him receives forgiveness and life. The Messiah who spoke to the woman at the well is the Savior you need.
Parent's note
Tell your children how broken water tanks picture empty hopes, and explain verses 23 and 24 in your own words. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home. Call each child to turn from sin and trust Jesus, and pray that God would give them a new heart.
Pray together
Now bring your empty hopes and the heart question to the Lord in prayer. Thank Him for the life found in Jesus, and let each willing child pray.
Jesus said to her, “I am he, the one who speaks to you.”
John 4:26
Father, thank You for exposing the false hopes that leave us guilty and empty. Please lead each of us to turn from sin and trust Jesus for forgiveness and life. Help us remember Your goodness this week, and seek Your help instead of hiding our wrongdoing. Amen.
