Jeremiah 30: The LORD saves His people

Begin in prayer

Before we read about the time of Jacob’s trouble, let us come to the LORD together. Ask Him to help us trust that He will save His people and raise up their King, to meet with our family now, and to show us Christ, the Son of David.

He brought me up also out of a horrible pit, out of the miry clay. He set my feet on a rock, and gave me a firm place to stand.

Psalms 40:2

Father in heaven, please open our eyes as we read Your Word. Show us that You will save Your people and raise up their King, and help us to trust You. Show us Christ, the Son of David, and help us to turn from our sin and trust Him. Make us more like Jesus. And please bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.

See where we're going

The LORD tells Jeremiah to write His words in a book (verses 1 and 2). He promises to bring Israel and Judah back to the land He gave their fathers (verse 3). It is a time of trembling and fear, the time of Jacob’s trouble, yet Jacob will be saved out of it (verses 5 to 7). The LORD will break their yoke, burst their bonds, and raise up David their king, whom they will serve (verses 8 and 9). He tells Jacob not to be afraid, because He will save them from far away and bring them home (verses 10 and 11). Their wounds are deep because of their great sin, but the LORD will restore their health and heal them (verses 12 to 17). The chapter closes with the promise, “You shall be my people” (verse 22), and with God’s anger on the wicked (verses 23 and 24).

Reflect together

Key truth

The LORD will save His people and raise up David their King.

Jeremiah hears a voice of trembling and fear, and the LORD compares it to a woman in labor (verses 5 and 6). The day is great, yet Jacob will be saved out of it (verse 7). The LORD will break the yoke from their neck (verse 8). The LORD promises to raise up “David their king,” a king from David’s family, and the people will serve Him (verse 9). Their wound is incurable because of their great iniquity, yet the LORD will restore their health (verses 12 to 17). He promises to build the city on its own hill and fill the people with thanksgiving (verses 18 and 19). The LORD says, “You shall be my people, and I will be your God” (verse 22), and this is the covenant promise He keeps. The storm of God’s anger on the wicked is real (verses 23 and 24), so every listener should turn from sin and trust Jesus. Jesus is the Son of David and the true King.

How does Jeremiah 30 show us that the LORD will save His people and raise up David their King?

The LORD will save His people from their trouble.

The yoke will be broken, and strangers will no longer make them their servants (verse 8). Jacob is in a time of great trouble, but he will be saved out of it (verse 7). Jesus breaks the yoke of sin.

The LORD will heal the wounds of His people.

Their wounds are deep because of their great sin, and there is no one to plead their cause (verses 12 to 15). The LORD says He will restore their health and heal their wounds (verse 17). Jesus heals the wound of sin.

God raises up David’s King to rule His people.

The LORD promises to raise up David their king, and the people will serve Him (verses 9 and 10). Jesus is the Son of David, and God raised Him from the dead. So He calls every sinner to come under His rule and trust Him.

Memorize

They will serve Yahweh their God, and David their king, whom I will raise up to them.

Jeremiah 30:9

Looking to Jesus in my life

Ask yourself in your heart, will I turn from my own way and trust Jesus as my King?

Jeremiah wrote that the people heard “a voice of trembling, of fear, and not of peace” (verse 5). Then the LORD spoke to the fearful, “Therefore don’t you be afraid, O Jacob my servant” (verse 10). He also promised a King, “David their king, whom I will raise up to them” (verse 9).

Our sin has wounded us, and we cannot break the yoke of sin ourselves. Jesus is the King God raised up. He bore the punishment our sin deserved, and He rose again on the third day. His payment is complete, and it is enough for every sinner who comes to Him.

So come to Jesus, the Son of David, and turn from your sin. Trust Him as your King and Savior, and ask Him to heal the wound of your sin. Every sinner who comes to Him will be healed, forgiven, and made a part of God’s people. To each one who comes, the LORD still says, “I will heal you of your wounds” (verse 17).

Parent's note

Tell your children that the LORD will save His people and raise up David’s King. Parents, you may want to explain the yoke and bonds in your own words. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home. Call each child to turn from sin and trust Jesus, and pray that God would give them a new heart.

Pray together

Now please close your time together in prayer. Thank God that He saves His people and raises up David’s King, and bring the heart question to Him. Every child can pray, so let each one say a short prayer if they want to.

Yah is my strength and song. He has become my salvation.

Psalms 118:14

Lord, thank You that You save Your people and raise up David’s King to rule over them. Forgive us for trusting our own strength and for going our own way. Thank You for Jesus, who heals the wounds of sin and bears the judgment we deserved. Help each of us to turn from sin, trust Him as King, and serve Him this week. Amen.
