Jeremiah 5: The LORD judges stubborn injustice
Begin in prayer
Before we search Jerusalem’s streets with Jeremiah for truth and justice, let us come before the Lord. Ask Him to expose the lies in our hearts, to bless our family as we listen, and to lead us to the righteousness of Jesus.
I will sing of loving kindness and justice. To you, Yahweh, I will sing praises.
Psalms 101:1
Father in heaven, open our eyes to the lies and injustice You condemn. Show us Jesus, whose righteousness never fails. Help us to repent and believe in Him, and make us more like Him in truth and mercy. Please bless our family as we worship You. In Jesus' name, Amen.
See where we're going
God calls for a search of Jerusalem’s streets for anyone practicing justice and seeking truth. Jeremiah finds both poor and great people refusing correction, while false oaths and unfaithfulness fill the city. The LORD will bring a distant nation to consume their harvests and destroy the cities they trust. Serving foreign gods in their own land will end in serving strangers in another land, though God will preserve His people from total destruction. They disregard the God who restrains the sea and gives their rain. Wicked men grow rich through deceit and deny justice to the fatherless and needy, while the people welcome lying prophets and corrupt priests.
As you read Jeremiah 5, look for the answers:
- What does the LORD seek in Jerusalem? (verse 1)
- How does the coming punishment answer the people’s choice of foreign gods? (verse 19)
- Whose needs do the wealthy wicked refuse to defend? (verse 28)

Key truth
The LORD looks for truth and justice, and He judges those who will not leave their lies.
The search through Jerusalem exposes a public life with justice and truth missing. Even people who swear by the LORD’s name use that oath to support lies. Jeremiah expects those with greater knowledge to act differently, yet finds them throwing off God’s rule with the poor. God’s generous provision has been answered with idolatry and adultery, including desire for neighbors’ wives. As they deny the coming sword and famine, He says His word will be fire and they will be wood. Serving strangers abroad will answer their worship of foreign gods at home. The sea observes the boundary God set, while His people refuse to fear the One who sends their seasonal rains. Like bird catchers laying traps, wealthy evildoers gain through deceit and leave the fatherless and needy without justice. Prophets, priests and willing hearers share the corruption that brings the LORD’s punishment.
How does Jeremiah 5 show us that the LORD looks for truth and justice, and judges those who will not leave their lies?
God requires truth from poor and great alike.
Jeremiah first thinks ignorance may explain the poor people’s rebellion, so he goes to those who know God’s law. They too have broken its bonds (verses 4 and 5). False oaths and refused correction reveal a city resisting the truth God seeks.
God’s word brings the judgment people deny.
The people dismiss warnings of sword and famine, yet God says His word will consume them like fire. A distant nation will take the food and flocks on which their children depend (verses 14 to 17). Foreign worship will end in foreign service, though the LORD says He will never make a full end.
God sees the injustice hidden behind wealth and worship.
The rich have caught people in deceit as a bird catcher catches birds (verses 26 and 27). They neglect the fatherless and deny the needy a fair judgment. False prophets and corrupt priests support this evil, and the people love their message. God asks what they will do when its end comes.
Memorize
If you can find a man, if there are any who does justly, who seeks truth; and I will pardon her.
Jeremiah 5:1
Looking to Jesus in my life
Ask yourself in your heart, what lie am I loving instead of trusting the truth Jesus speaks?
The LORD searches for someone who “does justly” and “seeks truth.” Jerusalem’s leaders and people share the rebellion He exposes. Its lying assurances cannot silence His judgment or defend the needy.
Jesus is righteous where sinners have failed. At the cross, He bore the sins of His people and the judgment those sins deserved. Nothing more needs to be added to the work He finished to save sinners. He rose from death as the victorious Savior.
Turn from deceit and believe the Lord Jesus. Forgiveness belongs to all who entrust themselves to Him. His grace gives sinners a new reason to tell the truth and care for those who have been wronged. Bring Him the lie you have been unwilling to leave.
Parent's note
Tell your children that verses 7 and 8 condemn unfaithfulness, explaining the marriage wrong in words suited to their age. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home. Call each child to turn from sin and trust Jesus, and pray that God would give them a new heart.
Pray together
Now thank the Lord for His truth and justice, and bring the heart question to Him. Invite each willing child to ask His help to leave deceit and trust Jesus.
Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.
Psalms 34:18
Father, thank You that injustice and lies never escape Your sight. Please forgive our sin and give each of us faith in Jesus, who bore judgment for His people. Help us speak truth this week, hear correction without excuses, and notice people who need a fair and merciful response. Amen.
