Jeremiah

Jeremiah 7: Trusting words cannot protect us

Begin in prayer

Before we hear the LORD speak at the gate of His house, let us come before Him in prayer. Ask Him to search our hearts, to be near our family, and to show us Christ, who knows every heart.

Search me, God, and know my heart. Try me, and know my thoughts.

Psalms 139:23

Father in heaven, please open our eyes as we read Your Word. Show us that You see the heart, and that only Jesus can make a sinner clean. Help us repent of our sin and trust Him. Make us more like Jesus. And please bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.

See where we're going

Jeremiah stands in the gate of the LORD’s house and calls the people of Judah to hear His word. They trust in lying words, repeating “Yahweh’s temple” as if the building itself would keep them safe. The LORD says real change means amending their ways and dealing justly with the neighbor, the foreigner, the fatherless and the widow. Shiloh, where the tabernacle once stood, was judged for the wickedness of Israel, and Jerusalem faces the same warning. The people steal, murder and commit adultery, yet they still come to stand in God’s house. Judah has even burned its children at Topheth, a practice God never commanded, and the LORD announces judgment on that valley.

As you read Jeremiah 7, look for the answers:

Reflect together

Key truth

The LORD sees our hearts, and He will not accept religion without true repentance.

Jeremiah stood at the gate of the Temple, where people entered to worship, so the whole crowd could hear God’s word (verse 2). The people believed the Temple’s name guaranteed their safety, and they repeated “Yahweh’s temple” as if the words could protect them (verse 4). Shiloh was where the tabernacle and the ark once stood, and the LORD judged that place for Israel’s wickedness (verses 12 to 14). Burnt offerings did not replace obedience, because the LORD asked His people to listen to His voice (verses 22 and 23). The valley of Hinnom lay south of Jerusalem, where Topheth was built, and the LORD never commanded such burning (verse 31). Old Testament sacrifices pointed forward to Christ, the one sacrifice that cleanses sinners.

How does Jeremiah 7 show us that the LORD sees our hearts, and will not accept religion without true repentance?

Trusting religious words cannot protect us.

The people said, “We are delivered,” and trusted the Temple’s name while they lived in sin (verses 4 and 10). The LORD answered that His house had become a den of robbers in their eyes (verse 11). Jesus is the only refuge for sinners.

The LORD asks for obedience from the heart.

He told them to amend their ways, deal justly, and stop oppressing the vulnerable (verses 3, 5 and 6). Obedience of this kind flows from a changed heart, not from offerings alone (verses 22 and 23). Only Jesus kept God’s law perfectly, and He saves sinners who repent and trust Him.

God judges the sin people try to hide.

The people did worse than their fathers (verse 26). The LORD sees the thefts and lies they bring into His house (verses 9 and 10). Nothing they did in secret was hidden from Him, even while they stood in His house.

Memorize

Has this house, which is called by my name, become a den of robbers in your eyes? Behold, I, even I, have seen it,” says Yahweh.

Jeremiah 7:11

Looking to Jesus in my life

Ask yourself in your heart, what do I trust besides Jesus, and will I turn from it?

The LORD told His people in His house, “Amend your ways and your doings.” They trusted the words “Yahweh’s temple” and thought the house would protect them. But God saw the theft, the lies and the sin they hid in their hearts. No religious words can cover sin before a holy God.

Jesus is the only One who kept God’s law perfectly. At the cross He died for His people and bore the judgment their sins had earned. His death paid their debt in full, He rose on the third day, and His work is enough. Nothing more is owed by those who trust Him.

Turn from empty religion and trust the Lord Jesus with your whole heart. Bring the sin you hide to Him, and do not keep it covered. Everyone who comes to Him this way is made clean, and He will never turn that person away. He still sees every heart, and He calls sinners home.

Parent's note

Tell your children that God looks at the heart, and that words without repentance do not please Him. Parents, you may want to explain the offerings and the valley of Topheth in your own words. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home. Call each child to turn from sin and trust Jesus, and pray that God would give them a new heart.

Pray together

Now please close your time together in prayer. Thank God that He sees our hearts, and bring the heart question to Him. Every child can pray, so let each one say a short prayer if they want to.

Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a right spirit within me.

Psalms 51:10

Lord, You see every heart, and nothing is hidden from You. Please forgive our empty religion and the sin we try to hide. Give us true repentance and faith in Jesus, and make us clean in Your sight. Help us obey You from the heart this week. Amen.
