Job 18: God exposes sin’s false security

Begin in prayer

Before Bildad warns about the wicked, please ask God to keep us truthful about ourselves and others. Ask Him to show our family the danger of sin and to lead us to Jesus for rescue.

May Yahweh therefore be judge, and give sentence between me and you, and see, and plead my cause, and deliver me out of your hand.”

1 Samuel 24:15

Father in heaven, please open our eyes as we read Your Word. Show us sin’s danger and keep us from false accusations. Show us how Jesus rescues His people from sin’s darkness. Make us more like Jesus. And please bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.

See where we're going

Bildad complains about Job’s words and anger before describing the wicked. He says their light goes out and their own feet enter a net. Traps and terrors surround them, while calamity destroys strength and bodily life. The wicked person is driven from his tent into the terror of death. His roots dry, his memory disappears and his family line ends. Bildad concludes that this is the place of one who does not know God.

As you read Job 18, look for the answers:

Key truth

God exposes the false security of sin, but Bildad wrongly treats Job’s suffering as proof that he is wicked.

Bildad begins by resenting Job’s treatment of the friends and dismissing his anger. He then pictures the wicked as a person whose light goes out and whose own steps enter a trap. The net teaches how sin can entangle the one who chooses it, a truth also stated in Proverbs 29 verse 6. That truth does not make Job the wicked person in Bildad’s account. The speech continues through terror, bodily ruin, lost home and a family line cut off. Those details cruelly resemble Job’s losses, although God has not given Bildad grounds for the charge. Please let the warning search our sins without turning calamity into evidence against a suffering neighbor.

How does Job 18 show us that God exposes the false security of sin, but Bildad wrongly treats Job’s suffering as proof that he is wicked?

Sin can entangle the person who chooses it.

Bildad pictures a man whose own feet carry him into a net. The warning concerns the self-entangling way of wickedness. It does not prove that Job’s calamities came from a secret sinful scheme. Learn this verse as a true picture of sin’s trap, and not as Bildad’s verdict on Job.

The security of the wicked cannot endure.

The speech pictures an extinguished lamp, terrors and roots drying beneath a tree. These images warn against treating wicked prosperity as secure. They do not establish that every person whose home is ruined has forgotten God.

A true warning must not become a false accusation.

Bildad ends by identifying this ruined home as the place of one who does not know God. Job’s losses make the insinuation painful. God’s own description of Job shows why the charge fails.

Memorise

For he is cast into a net by his own feet, and he wanders into its mesh.

Job 18:8

Looking to Jesus in my life

Ask yourself in your heart, am I trusting Jesus to rescue me from the sins that ensnare me?

Bildad’s picture gives the wicked no lasting security. Sin can ensnare its own pursuer, but Job’s ruined home does not prove that he pursued wickedness. The friends’ charge exceeds what they know.

Jesus frees His people from guilt that they cannot escape by themselves. He carried their sins and endured their deserved punishment at the cross. That finished sacrifice paid their debt in full. He rose from the dead to give them life. Isaiah 42 verse 16 tells of the LORD who makes darkness light before the blind.

Turn from sin and trust Jesus for rescue. Everyone who comes to Him receives forgiveness. His mercy brings His people out of darkness, and His truth teaches them to heed warnings without using them to accuse the innocent.

Parent's note

Tell your children that Bildad’s net pictures sin’s danger, but it does not explain Job’s losses as punishment for secret wickedness. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home. Call each child to turn from sin and trust Jesus, and pray that God would give them a new heart.

Pray together

Now please close your time together in prayer. Thank God that He exposes sin’s false security, and bring the heart question to Him. Every child can pray, so let each one say a short prayer if they want to.

I will bring the blind by a way that they don’t know. I will lead them in paths that they don’t know. I will make darkness light before them, and crooked places straight. I will do these things, and I will not forsake them.

Isaiah 42:16

Father, thank You that sin cannot provide lasting safety. Forgive our wrongdoing and our unfounded charges against others. Please turn us to faith in Jesus, who has paid for His people’s sins in full. Help us heed Your warnings and speak truth with compassion this week. In Jesus' name, Amen.
