Job

Job 20: Hidden wrongdoing will be uncovered

Begin in prayer

Before we hear Zophar speak again, please ask God to show us the danger of concealed wrongdoing. Ask Him to search our hearts and to show our family the mercy of Jesus for sinners who confess.

“‘You shall not oppress your neighbor, nor rob him. “‘The wages of a hired servant shall not remain with you all night until the morning.

Leviticus 19:13

Father in heaven, please open our eyes as we read Your Word. Help us confess real sins and refuse unfounded accusations. Show us the mercy of Christ for sinners who confess. Make us more like Jesus. And please bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.

See where we're going

Zophar answers in haste after feeling put to shame. He claims that the wicked person’s triumph is brief. He says the wicked perish forever and disappear like a dream. Wickedness tastes sweet but becomes deadly poison, and swallowed riches must be surrendered. He names oppression of the poor and violent seizure of a house. Then he describes distress, God’s wrath, weapons and consuming fire overtaking the wicked. Heaven and earth expose the person’s iniquity, and Zophar calls this the heritage appointed by God.

As you read Job 20, look for the answers:

Reflect together

Key truth

God will expose wickedness and judge it, but Zophar cannot prove secret crimes by pointing to Job’s losses.

Zophar answers because he feels shamed and insists that the triumph of the wicked lasts only a moment. His account pictures evil as something sweet in the mouth that becomes poison within. The image teaches that enjoying sin does not make its outcome good. His picture names the oppression of poor people and the violent seizure of a house. His final appeal to heaven and earth says wrongdoing will be exposed rather than hidden forever. Jesus also teaches that hidden things will be revealed, in Luke 12 verses 2 and 3. Yet Zophar has no evidence that Job committed the crimes in his picture. God’s coming judgment does not validate the friend’s accusation or his claim that wicked prosperity is always brief.

How does Job 20 show us that God will expose wickedness and judge it, but Zophar cannot prove secret crimes by pointing to Job’s losses?

Sin’s sweetness cannot prevent its bitter outcome.

Zophar pictures wickedness held beneath the tongue like a favorite taste. What seemed pleasant becomes deadly venom. Enjoying wrongdoing cannot make it safe or right.

God judges oppression and stolen gain.

Zophar describes a man taking a house and neglecting the poor. Wealth gained this way brings guilt rather than secure enjoyment. Those are real sins, but the speech does not prove that Job committed them.

Hidden wickedness will not remain hidden forever.

The speech calls heaven and earth as witnesses against wrongdoing. We should hear the warning as a call to confess actual sin. Job’s calamities still do not supply the missing evidence for Zophar’s charge. Learn this verse as a true warning about hidden sin, and not as Zophar’s verdict on Job.

Memorise

The heavens shall reveal his iniquity. The earth shall rise up against him.

Job 20:27

Looking to Jesus in my life

Ask yourself in your heart, am I bringing my concealed sins to Jesus for forgiveness?

Zophar says heaven and earth will reveal the wicked person’s iniquity. Hidden oppression and stolen wealth cannot become innocent because no human witness sees them. Yet he has not proved these crimes against Job.

The gospel shows how God remains just while forgiving sinners. Romans 3 verses 25 and 26 connects that righteousness with Jesus’ atoning sacrifice. He carried the sins of His people and bore their deserved punishment at the cross. His death settled their guilt in full. He rose from the dead and lives as the Savior of those who come to Him.

Turn from concealed sin and trust Jesus. He forgives everyone who depends on His sacrifice. You can bring the truth about your wrongdoing to Him instead of hiding from the judgment you cannot escape by yourself.

Parent's note

Tell your children that God exposes sin, while Zophar cannot invent secret crimes to explain Job’s suffering. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home. Call each child to turn from sin and trust Jesus, and pray that God would give them a new heart.

Pray together

Now please close your time together in prayer. Thank God that wickedness cannot stay hidden from Him, and bring the heart question to Him. Every child can pray, so let each one say a short prayer if they want to.

Praise Yahweh, my soul, and don’t forget all his benefits; who forgives all your sins; who heals all your diseases; who redeems your life from destruction; who crowns you with loving kindness and tender mercies;

Psalm 103:2-4

Father, thank You that hidden wrongdoing cannot escape Your judgment. Forgive the sins we conceal and the charges we make without truth. Please lead us to repentance and faith in Jesus, whose sacrifice is sufficient. Help us confess honestly and act justly toward others this week. In Jesus' name, Amen.
