Job

Job 21: God rules beyond present prosperity

Begin in prayer

Before Job answers Zophar, please ask God to teach us to listen carefully. Ask Him to keep our family from judging by outward success and to lead us to Jesus.

but indeed for this cause I have made you stand: to show you my power, and that my name may be declared throughout all the earth;

Exodus 9:16

Father in heaven, please open our eyes as we read Your Word. Keep us from confusing outward success with Your saving favor. Help us see Jesus as the Savior whose mercy outlasts earthly prosperity. Make us more like Jesus. And please bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.

See where we're going

Job asks the friends to listen and consider why wicked people grow old and powerful. Their children, livestock and households may flourish while they reject God’s ways. Job refuses their counsel and says their prosperity is not in their own hands. He challenges the claim that calamity always overtakes them quickly. People who die in ease and those who die in bitterness alike lie in the dust. He describes the wicked being carried to a watched tomb and rejects the falsehood left in his friends’ comfort.

As you read Job 21, look for the answers:

Reflect together

Key truth

God holds prosperity and judgment in His hands, even when wicked people enjoy long and peaceful lives.

Job asks the friends to listen because their account does not match what happens around them. Some people reject God while their households flourish and their children rejoice. Their prosperity still rests beyond their own power, so Job refuses their godless counsel. His observation challenges a rule about quick earthly punishment, not God’s right to judge. People who die in ease and people who die in bitterness share the dust. Neither outward condition proves the whole truth about a life before God. Job’s final challenge exposes comfort that protects an explanation instead of listening to the sufferer.

How does Job 21 show us that God holds prosperity and judgment in His hands, even when wicked people enjoy long and peaceful lives?

Present prosperity cannot prove that God approves a life.

Job describes people who dismiss God while their families and herds flourish. Their enjoyment does not make their words against God right. The gifts they possess remain beyond their power to secure.

God’s judgment cannot be measured by the timing we expect.

Job questions how often the wicked immediately lose their light and security. He also speaks of the day of calamity and wrath. The delay challenges the friends’ timetable without putting judgment beyond God’s rule.

Listening matters when an explanation fails.

The friends ask where the wicked person’s home has gone, pointing toward Job’s ruined household. Job answers with evidence of prosperous wicked people and honored burials. Their explanation cannot comfort him while it ignores that evidence.

Memorise

Behold, their prosperity is not in their hand. The counsel of the wicked is far from me.

Job 21:16

Looking to Jesus in my life

Ask yourself in your heart, am I seeking mercy in Jesus rather than judging God’s favor by outward success?

Job refuses to call the wicked righteous because they prosper. He also refuses to call a sufferer wicked because his home is ruined. Earthly success cannot settle a person’s standing before God.

Romans 2 verses 4 to 6 warns that God’s patience calls sinners to repentance while judgment remains certain. Jesus came to save His people from that deserved judgment. He carried their sins and bore their punishment at the cross. His sacrifice completed their redemption, with nothing left for them to pay. He rose from the dead to give them life.

Turn from sin and trust Jesus for mercy. All who rely on His completed sacrifice receive forgiveness. His finished work gives His people a hope that neither earthly wealth nor earthly loss can decide.

Parent's note

Tell your children that earthly success cannot show whether someone is right with God, and earthly suffering cannot prove secret wickedness. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home. Call each child to turn from sin and trust Jesus, and pray that God would give them a new heart.

Pray together

Now please close your time together in prayer. Thank God that prosperity and judgment remain in His hands, and bring the heart question to Him. Every child can pray, so let each one say a short prayer if they want to.

What if God, willing to show his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much patience vessels of wrath made for destruction, and that he might make known the riches of his glory on vessels of mercy, which he prepared beforehand for glory,

Romans 9:22-23

Father, thank You that prosperity and judgment remain in Your hands. Forgive our love of outward success and our careless judgments of others. Please bring us to repentance and faith in Jesus, whose sacrifice is complete. Help us listen carefully and seek Your mercy this week. In Jesus' name, Amen.
