Job

Job 22: God’s words outweigh invented accusations

Begin in prayer

Before we hear Eliphaz’s new accusations, please ask God to help us receive His Word with honest hearts.

He said to them, “Yahweh is witness against you, and his anointed is witness today, that you have not found anything in my hand.” They said, “He is witness.”

1 Samuel 12:5

Father in heaven, please open our eyes as we read Your Word. Teach us to treasure Your words and refuse false charges. Show us the obedient Son who gives His people acceptance. Make us more like Jesus. And please bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.

See where we're going

Eliphaz asks whether human righteousness benefits God and then calls Job’s wickedness great. He accuses Job of taking clothing, withholding food and water, and mistreating widows and orphans. He claims that Job thinks God cannot see through thick clouds. He warns about the old way of wicked people who rejected God despite receiving good gifts. Then he urges Job to receive God’s instruction, put away unrighteousness and value the Almighty above treasure. He promises restored success, answered prayer and deliverance through clean hands.

As you read Job 22, look for the answers:

Reflect together

Key truth

God gives instruction worth treasuring, but Eliphaz misuses His truth to condemn Job without evidence.

Eliphaz moves from general suspicion to definite charges that Job has deprived hungry people, widows and orphans. He offers no evidence for these crimes. He also puts words into Job’s mouth about God being unable to see through clouds. Those charges do not become true because he ends with an invitation to return to God. Receiving God’s instruction and valuing Him above wealth are sound counsel. Yet Job will answer that he has already treasured God’s words above food. The promises of restored success do not give Eliphaz authority to explain Job’s losses. Please receive the true call to cherish God’s Word while refusing the false portrait built around it.

How does Job 22 show us that God gives instruction worth treasuring, but Eliphaz misuses His truth to condemn Job without evidence?

False charges wrong the neighbor they pretend to correct.

Eliphaz names withheld food and clothing, abandoned widows and harmed orphans. These are serious sins that require truth and evidence. His speech supplies accusation instead of proof.

God’s instruction must be treasured within the heart.

Words laid up in the heart are kept for trust and obedience. This is more than repeating religious counsel to someone else. Job’s answer in chapter 23 will show that this devotion was already part of his life.

God cannot be reduced to a means of restored success.

Eliphaz links returning to God with established plans, answered prayers and rescue for others. His promises exceed what God has told him about Job. God Himself is worthy of delight even when earthly restoration is not promised.

Memorise

Please receive instruction from his mouth, and lay up his words in your heart.

Job 22:22

Looking to Jesus in my life

Ask yourself in your heart, how have I used God’s Word to judge others instead of seeking mercy?

Eliphaz tells Job to lay God’s words in his heart, yet surrounds that counsel with unproved accusations. God’s instruction deserves better than being used to support a false case against a neighbor.

Jesus treasured and obeyed His Father’s Word without sin. He answered temptation with God’s Word in Matthew 4 verse 4. He then died for His people, bearing the punishment their disobedience deserved. His obedience and sacrifice are complete and fully sufficient for their forgiveness. God raised Him bodily from death. The obedient Son now receives those who have failed.

Turn from your sins and trust Jesus. Forgiveness is freely given to those resting in Him. You can treasure His Word as someone seeking His mercy, without claiming innocence through your own religious performance.

Parent's note

Tell your children to treasure God’s words without accepting Eliphaz’s unsupported accusations or his promises of restored success. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home. Call each child to turn from sin and trust Jesus, and pray that God would give them a new heart.

Pray together

Now please close your time together in prayer. Thank God for words worth treasuring in our hearts, and bring the heart question to Him. Every child can pray, so let each one say a short prayer if they want to.

Who are you who judge another’s servant? To his own lord he stands or falls. Yes, he will be made to stand, for God has power to make him stand.

Romans 14:4

Father, thank You for giving us Your Word to treasure and obey. Forgive our disobedience and the false charges we make. Please turn us from sin to faith in Jesus, whose obedience and sacrifice are enough. Help us receive Your instruction with honest hearts this week. In Jesus' name, Amen.
