Job 24: God sees every hidden wrong
Begin in prayer
Before we read about the wrongs Job sees, please ask God to give us honest and compassionate hearts.
“You shall not take advantage of any widow or fatherless child. If you take advantage of them at all, and they cry at all to me, I will surely hear their cry; and my wrath will grow hot, and I will kill you with the sword; and your wives shall be widows, and your children fatherless.
Exodus 22:22-24
Father in heaven, please open our eyes as we read Your Word. Help us remember that no hidden wrong escapes Your sight. Let us see the Judge who saves His people through His sacrifice. Make us more like Jesus. And please bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.
See where we're going
Job asks why those who know God do not see His times of judgment. He describes stolen land and animals, vulnerable people driven away, and workers hungry, cold and thirsty. The wounded cry from the city while judgment seems absent. Murderers, thieves and adulterers choose darkness to conceal their acts. Job describes ruin and death overtaking sinners, yet also says God gives the mighty security while watching their ways. They are exalted for a little while and then brought low and cut off.
As you read Job 24, look for the answers:
- Which acts leave the poor hungry and exposed? (verses 2 to 12)
- Why do offenders seek darkness? (verses 13 to 17)
- What does God do while the mighty rest securely? (verses 22 to 24)
Reflect together
Key truth
God sees the ways of the wicked, even when their security continues and the oppressed wait for visible justice.
Job describes definite wrongs rather than merely wondering why trouble exists. Stolen land and animals leave vulnerable people without food, clothing or shelter. Workers carry grain while hungry and tread wine while thirsty, showing the cruelty of labor whose benefit is withheld. Other offenders choose darkness to hide murder, theft and adultery. Job cannot see the judgment he expects, yet he says God’s eyes remain on their ways. Security granted for a time does not mean their evil has escaped Him. The ending joins temporary exaltation with death and being brought low. Please keep both the suffering that continues and the divine knowledge that remains.
How does Job 24 show us that God sees the ways of the wicked, even when their security continues and the oppressed wait for visible justice?
Oppression takes what vulnerable people need to live.
Removing a landmark steals the boundary protecting another person’s land. Taking a widow’s ox or an orphan’s donkey removes help needed for work. Job also describes a fatherless child taken from the breast and a pledge taken from the poor. Job follows such acts into hunger, cold and homelessness.
Darkness cannot make wrongdoing safe from God.
The murderer, thief and adulterer try to avoid being seen. Their choice of darkness shows deliberate concealment. God’s eyes still remain on their ways.
Present security does not cancel coming judgment.
Job says God gives the mighty security even while watching them. Their exaltation lasts only a little while before they are brought low. The delay does not prove approval or give Job an answer for every sufferer.
Memorise
God gives them security, and they rest in it. His eyes are on their ways.
Job 24:23
Looking to Jesus in my life
Ask yourself in your heart, what hidden sin must I bring to Jesus before the God who sees?
Job sees people working hungry and hiding from the cold while powerful offenders rest securely. His question about justice is painful because those wrongs are real. Yet God’s eyes remain on the offenders’ ways.
Romans 2 verse 16 teaches that God will judge human secrets through Jesus Christ. The Judge also came to save His people from the judgment they deserve. He died in their place and carried their sins under God’s wrath. His sacrifice paid for their guilt in full. He rose from the dead and lives to receive those who seek Him.
Turn from the sin you hide and trust Jesus for forgiveness. He pardons everyone who comes to Him. His people can seek justice and care for the oppressed while entrusting final judgment to the One who sees.
Parent's note
Tell your children that God sees concealed wrongdoing, while delayed judgment never makes oppression acceptable. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home. Call each child to turn from sin and trust Jesus, and pray that God would give them a new heart.
Pray together
Now please close your time together in prayer. Thank God for seeing every wrong that people try to hide, and bring the heart question to Him. Every child can pray, so let each one say a short prayer if they want to.
Yahweh redeems the soul of his servants. None of those who take refuge in him shall be condemned.
Psalm 34:22
Father, thank You that Your eyes see every wrong. Forgive our hidden sins and our indifference to people who suffer. Please bring us to repentance and faith in Jesus, who bore His people’s judgment. Help us act honestly and care for vulnerable neighbors this week. In Jesus' name, Amen.
