Job 33: God gives life and gracious rescue
Begin in prayer
Before Elihu describes rescue, please ask God to teach us to receive His grace and confess our sins.
Please pardon the iniquity of this people according to the greatness of your loving kindness, and according as you have forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now.”
Numbers 14:19
Father in heaven, please open our eyes as we read Your Word. Help us distinguish Your mercy from promises You have not made. Let us see Jesus, who gave His life as a ransom for many. Make us more like Jesus. And please bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.
See where we're going
Elihu asks Job to hear him as a fellow creature made by God’s Spirit and formed from clay. He summarizes Job’s complaints and insists that God is greater and need not give an account of His dealings. He describes God speaking through dreams and restraining pride, then chastening a person through wasting sickness. If an angel interprets what is right, God shows grace and declares a ransom from the pit. Elihu describes restored flesh, prayer, confession and a thankful song about life redeemed. He says God works repeatedly to bring people back from the pit and again asks Job to listen or answer.
As you read Job 33, look for the answers:
- How does Elihu describe himself before God? (verses 4 to 7)
- What does he say God’s warnings restrain? (verses 14 to 18)
- What does the rescued person confess and celebrate? (verses 27 and 28)
Reflect together
Key truth
God is gracious, and He rescues people from the pit by a ransom.
Elihu asks Job to listen as one creature speaking to another, both formed from clay and dependent on God for life. He summarizes Job’s claims and rejects the charge that God treats him as an enemy. He then describes God warning people through dreams and humbling them through painful illness. His account moves to an angel who interprets what is right, God’s grace and a ransom that prevents death. The rescued person recovers, prays and sings about sin confessed and life redeemed. Elihu presents these dealings as ways God brings people back from the pit. His description does not disclose the particular reason for Job’s calamities or promise recovery to every sick person who repents.
How does Job 33 show us that God is gracious, and He rescues people from the pit by a ransom?
Elihu speaks as a fellow creature dependent on God.
He says God’s Spirit made him and God’s breath gives him life. Like Job, he was formed from clay. These shared limits do not give him God’s place or make his every conclusion certain.
God’s grace gives hope beyond a warning of death.
Elihu describes a sufferer near the pit and an angel interpreting what is right. The condition leads to God’s gracious declaration of a ransom and the person’s recovery. The thankful song confesses sin and credits God with rescue.
The account must not become a recovery bargain.
Elihu describes renewed flesh, prayer and joy after rescue. These gifts are not a promise that every repentant sufferer will regain health. The heavenly account in chapters 1 and 2 already prevents treating Job’s losses as proof of secret wrongdoing.
Memorise
I have sinned, and perverted that which was right, and it didn’t profit me. He has redeemed my soul from going into the pit. My life shall see the light.
Job 33:27-28
Looking to Jesus in my life
Ask yourself in your heart, what sin must I confess as I seek the rescue only Jesus can give?
Elihu describes God’s grace, a ransom and a person singing about rescue from death. This account does not guarantee Job’s immediate recovery. It gives us words to understand rescue as God’s gift.
In Mark 10 verse 45, Jesus says He came to give His life as a ransom for many. Jesus died in His people’s place, carrying their guilt and punishment. His sacrifice obtained eternal redemption once for all, with no further offering needed. He rose from the dead.
Turn from your sins and trust the risen Jesus. He forgives all who come to Him for rescue. His ransom secures freedom from sin’s condemnation, even when bodily sickness remains.
Parent's note
Tell your children that Jesus gives eternal rescue through His ransom, while Elihu’s account does not guarantee recovery from every illness. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home. Call each child to turn from sin and trust Jesus, and pray that God would give them a new heart.
Pray together
Now please close your time together in prayer. Thank God for gracious rescue that sinners cannot buy, and bring the heart question to Him. Every child can pray, so let each one say a short prayer if they want to.
But God, being rich in mercy, for his great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved),
Ephesians 2:4-5
Father, thank You for gracious rescue that we cannot buy. Forgive our sins and our attempts to bargain for Your favor. Please bring us to trust Jesus, who gave His life as a ransom and rose again. Help us confess wrong, receive Your Word and care patiently for sick people this week. In Jesus' name, Amen.
